Well what can I say, a night out in Hong Kong is rather epic. All the bars are together or one street then you go up a lift to a higher street to the street of clubs – well there are steps but that wasn’t an option with the size of Tracey’s heels!
The most bizarre part of it all is that, when you get to central, everybody goes to the 7/11 shop, buys their alcohol and then walks round the bar/club street drinking until they decide which to go in! This felt very strange as the one thing you don’t do in the UK is drink out on the streets!
Once settled on a place we headed inside and partied the night away in style, and were provided with much entertainment courtesy of people's crazy dancing....yes crazier than mine!, police raids and more. Even with everybody gathered on the streets drinking and chatting the night life felt very civilised, there definitely wasn’t the possibility of a fight or any arguing, and around 4am we jumped in a taxi and headed home.
Today (Sunday 9th) we jumped on the bus and headed North East to Sai Kung, to
where Tracey grew up. This is a lovely town and had a strong European feeling with big plazas full of people relaxing on a Sunday, apparently it is an area of the country where quite a lot of westerns settle. Being on the coast it had amazing views and a vast array of seafood restaurants with tanks of fish/seafood to choose from. After wondering round, grabbing some lunch and a very yummy smoothie (yay some fruit) we jumped on another bus which headed into Sai Kung country park. The journey consisted of very twisty small rounds up and down the mountains providing the most beautiful views of the sea and islands. In true Env style Tracey and I went for a hike along a path, again with stunning views which took us to a white sand, idyllic beach. As it was winter we just had a walk along the beach, admired the view, watched people flying there homemade kites and observed the sand crabs....I did dip my hand in the sea though. We then headed back up….and I mean UP the path back to the bus stop. I don’t think I realised how steep the path down was, but I
sure appreciated it the way back up 😊 The sun was starting to go down however and the whole bay was a haze of pinky sky....beautiful! A couple of buses took us back to Tracy’s area and we jumped off at one of the malls and headed to a restaurant to meet Paul, Tracey’s boyfriend. It was good to see Paul and catch up again, last time I believe was in his grad week in the LCR.
This restaurant is one of Tracey and Paul’s favourites as it is a hotpot of boiling water, you then create your own dipping sauce and choose which items you want….then you dip them in the pot and cook them yourself…..Hong Kong version so a French hotstone! We had a selection of eel, beef, bean curd balls, scallops, veg basket (spinach, water chestnuts, mushrooms), fish beef squid balls, coral clams, rice noodles and deep fried fish skins. It was great fun fishing in the bowl for the items, dipping and eating. To drink I avoided standard lemonade/coke on offer and sampled the Chinese herbal tea which is cold and rather nice. For dessert I tried the almond soup, just like almond milk but
slightly thicker, and black beans in coconut milk which was also very yummy 😊 We didn’t get home until around 11.30pm and just chilled out before a night of restless sleep.
