Ah... Georgia, sweet Georgia... You make me so drunk!! The last week and a half I have spent in Tbilisi, the charming capital of this country, and the mountains... In Tbilisi I met some great people at Irena's Home stay, both travellers and the family and friends of the family. This lead to some good parties and lots of consummation of vodka! Of course I also looked at some sites; I strolled around the town, took daytrips to Mtskheta their religious capital, Davit Gareja an old monastic sight on the border with Azerbaijan and took a dip in Tbilisi Sea a reservoir just outside the capital. But admittedly I spend much of my time tending my frequent hangovers in bed at the home stay... After a week of this I left to the Caucasus together with ... read more

Like Jason and his Argonauts in times past I went to Georgia to seek out the Golden Fleece... Unlike Jason I wasn't successful but I did find a country full of very hospitable people who enjoy feasting and who will take very well care of their guests! I also found the last Stalin fans in the world... He lives on in Gori his birthplace!! I entered Georgia at Batumi which is the country's main seaside resort... It's full of charming run down buildings from the turn of the century... Near by is Gonio a more or less intact Roman fortress. After this I went to Kutaisi, the second city of Georgia and what is thought to be the town where Jason found the Golden Fleece. I stayed with Giorgi and his family who took good care ... read more

It was our last night and we had another amazing dinner with Georgian dishes and (of course) a bottle of vodka to clear our throats... uhumm uhumm..There was me, Johan, Tiko, Lika and her friend, Natia and Gigi - all enjoying our final night in Tbilisi. So after dinner we had a short stroll in some 'fashionable' streets of Tbilisi - where a cup of tea costs more than a regular workers daily wage. We took a taxi back to the hotel to get our suitcases. My backpack and the souvenir wine bottles that our precious hosts had presented us earlier went into the trunk of the car since they didn´t fit inside. To make the story short, I managed to forget everything when we arrived to the hotel and the taxi driver had taken off ... read more

After crossing the border, we were hounded by taxis looking for our custom to drive us the 12 km to the nearest town of Batumi. Tired and with an aching back, we checked into Hotel Boni, where, for 20 Pounds we were treated to a spacious room with balcony, TV and BATH! We watched the end of a Spanish football game, drank some of the contents of the mini-bar and fell asleep. We woke up to the alarm at 8am and took a taxi to the train station via an ATM. We had thought that Georgia was 2 hours ahead of Turkey, but in fact it is only 1 hour ahead, however we still managed to find a train headed for Tbilisi and dined on a 'breakfast of kings', cake, crisps and a mars bar. The ... read more

Gamarjoba! Some of you know already that I am here to finalise my masters thesis on Capital Markets in Developing Countries. ALL of you know that combining work and pleasure is essential for me to enjoy what I do. It has been possible for me to have both during this trip. Together with my partner, Johan, I have interviewed several institutions and actors in Tbilisi, but equally important I´ve have gained a great insight in the culture, mentality and way of living in the country. As usual it is hard to describe all of the experiences and nuances with words and I find the lens of the camera doing a good job for me at times. Still there are some things that needs to be told as I remember them: First memories We first arrived to ... read more

We thought it necessary to provide a background of Georgia in our first entry from this part of the trip seeing that it is a less well-known part of the world. We are the only backpackers we have seen! We hope very much that this situation will change in the coming years. Not that we wish a plague of backpackers upon the wonderful Georgian people but really this country deserves to be seen and the people deserve to have the tourist industry contribute in a much more substantial way to their economy. We will now give you a brief day-by-day run down on what we have been up to in our ten days here. We bought a new digital camera with the insurance money taking advantage of the tax-free shopping at Heathrow Airport (every cloud has ... read more

Georgia...is it in Europe or Asia? The question needs only to be asked to be answered. Welcome to Georgia, a land filled with magnificent history and beauty. Archeologists find that the oldest traces of wine production (7000-5000 BC) are traced to this region in the Caucasus. For those of us in the West, we unfortunately get precious little exposure to this stretch of land between the Black and Caspian seas. Hopefully that is changing. Georgians are not Russians and they are proud of their own language, which is in its own language group, completely unrelated to Indo-European or Slavic languages. Georgians have have been embroiled in struggles against their neighbors for centuries. The countryside is dotted with towered fortifications, many of which house ancient churches and monastaries. The Georgian nation enjoyed brief independance as a republic ... read more

Hotel: Sheraton Metechi Palace (Tbilisi, Georgia) $0 I had reserved an award at the Sheraton Metechi Palace in Tbilisi for our final night in Tbilisi. The hotel isn't very convenient for the rest of town, being along the road to the airport about 8 blocks east of the Lile Hotel. My wife and I walked over this morning and claimed our bag that we had left earlier this week. The Sheraton isn't much to look at from the outside (Lonely Planet describes it as a Swedish prison); but the rooms inside were quite comfortable. The breakfast buffet was decent, and afterwards we went for a relaxing swim in the pool (we didn't wait 30 minutes!). Around 11AM I left for Gori, my wife stayed behind to relax at the hotel. The minibus ride ($1.50) was about ... read more

Hotel: Hotel Lile (Tbilisi, Georgia) $40 After a decent breakfast, a taxi driver arrived and we set off for Vardzia, the cave city. The landscape soon changed from rolling meadows to more mountainous terrain. The driver had agreed to take us to Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe (~50 miles) for $50. The road was in pretty bad shape for most of the trip, and our driver was flying along. Vardzia is a cave city located about 15 miles off the Akhalkalaki to Akhaltsikhe road, the royal city in the late 1100's consisted of over 700 caves carved into the cliffsides, supporting a population of tens of thousands. The caves are still inhabited by monks to this day. They are a good climb up from the valley below. There is a secret passageway carved through the rock that was ... read more

Hotel: EuroStar Hotel (Akhalkalaki, Georgia) $40 This morning we planned on visiting the town of Echmiadzin, the Armenian Vatican, home to the Armenian Orthodox church. We planned to take a minibus there, and taxi back. The minibus depot was about 10 blocks away and so we climbed into a taxi for the short ride. Once we were at the depot, the taxi driver started getting animated, I think he wanted us to take the taxi instead of the minibus; it would have been cheaper to take the minibus of course. We finally decided to take the taxi there and back, as it would only be $12.50 for all 4 of us. The town of Echmiadzin lies about 20 minutes west of Yerevan, past the airport. On the way out of town, we passed several brandy companies, ... read more
