Hello again and greetings from..... erm.... well....China. That's right, we've had a bit of a hiccup in our plans and the long and the short of it is that we are stranded in China for the moment and not Vietnam. So, you might be wondering what happened. Ok here goes... Yesterday, we boarded the sleeper bus bound for Hekou on the border at 6.30 pm even though it wasn't due to leave for another hour. We settled into our bottom bunks and waited to depart. the sleeper bus is a double decker bus but without an upstairs. Instead there are 2 tiers of beds in 3 rows along the bus. You lie with your feet facing the windscreen and your head is on a raised section. Under the raised section are the feet of the person ... read more

Well, seeing as we're stuck in Kunming for another couple of days, there's time to upload the photos of our time here. Kunming has certainly been nicer than anywhere else we've visited in China and of all the places to be stranded, we're glad it's here :-)... read more

On my second day in Dali, feeling refreshed, I decided to climb a mountain. They recommend that you attempt climbing the mountains as a group because solo hikers are likely to be mugged, so I latched onto a group of American travellers who were staying at my guest house. They were such a lovely group of people. A father, who was an english teacher as well, his Chinese, non-English speaking girlfriend, his two grown up daughters, a boyfriend of one of them and an American guy who, like me, had latched onto the family in order to scale the mountain unmolested. It was hard work, but god it was great! I have to admitt that we cheated a bit, there is a chairlift that takes you half way up the mountain. But we climbed the rest ... read more

A few more notes on Tibet and China!! #1 transportation is SOO unreliable here it will make you crazy!! We've taken 4 flights in total and 3 have been delayed. We've taken 1 train and its been delayed. We tried to leave Tibet but we were denied!! We just wanted out at this point!! Our flight was delayed and delayed and finally in Chinese they told us it was cancled!! So we got taken back to the capital, Lhasa to a fancy place with a huge chandilier and would have been 100 american dollars for one night....we're used to paying around 3 to 6 canadian!! But is was free so we milked up the free bathrobe and slippers and stole as much as we could from the bathroom!! But once again the food was terrible!! Relaxed ... read more

It's been a quiet day today on this, our last full day in China. We had a lie-in this morning and then popped into the hotel travel office to book our bus tickets to Hekou on the Vietnamese border. It cost us a staggering 112 Yuan each for the 8-hour journey, which works out at just £8 - how cheap is that? And we've been led to believe that Vietnam will be even cheaper than China so hopefully we'll be able to claw back some of the overspending we had to do in Japan. We were due to meet up with David and Ashley again this afternoon but only David was able to make it. Rather than traipse around hunting for a guide book for Vietnam in English which we were highly unlikely to find, we ... read more

Just when I was really starting to think China didnt have much to offer I found Dali. An ancient city nestled at the foot of the Tibetan Platau, recently refurbished as a tourist destination, synthetically charming and very, very user friendly. When the bus from Kunming pulled into Dali city my stomach dropped and I though "here we go again." Dali City is just another big, dirty city. But then I discovered (with the help of some oppertunistic touts) that I needed to catch another bus to get to Old Dali. As the expensive little mini bus bumped along the narrow cobbled streets between rice paddies and corn fields I could only sigh with relief. The first thing I noticed was the altitude. I had never been at high altitudes before. Dali is at 2000 meters, ... read more

Surprise.... Okay so we flew into Zhongdian and had a random lady pick us up in her car to drive us to the Tibet Cafe which was where we were supposed to find out information on the saftey of hiking the gorge. We then took a bus right into Qaio Tou which was the starting point of the next 2 days. Walked to Margo's Guest House (she is an Australian lady who has all the scoop on the gorge, owns a hostel here and makes great food (Western food that is). She is very scatter brained as we soon found out, she talks about 590689 things at once and none of us could understand her or figure out who she was taking to most of the time. But it was cheap ($2 to sleep) and we ... read more

Today we were off to the bird and flower market with our new friends and this time we didn't leave anything to chance with the buses. We skipped the hotel breakfast which is proving to be too greasy for us and got to the bus stop nice and early. Surprise, surprise, because we weren't in a rush the bus turned up really quickly. It was packed to the brim with commuting Chinese so we took a chance and waited for the next one to turn up, which it did just 2 minutes later. We were at our meeting point with almost 20 minutes to spare :-) David arrived just after 11.00 am as arranged and gave us the happy news that Spring would be coming too. A few minutes later she turned up and said that ... read more

In Chinese tradition there is always a yin and yang that go together, like opposite forces of one another. How appropriate then that after such a brilliant day out yesterday, we were faced with the opposite experience today. I guess you just aren't allowed to have it good all the time. The problems started this morning when we wanted to make our hostel booking for our next leg of the tour which will be in Sapa, Vietnam. We have been using a tea house that has a couple of cheap but dodgy computers to update the blog but notcied there were several viruses and worms on the system which meant it wouldn't be safe to make a credit card booking online. Instead we decided to pay the high fee (10 Yuan an hour) to use the ... read more

In true Bill and Ted style, today we had yet another most excellent adventure. Today's destination was Shilin and the magical stone forest. We started the day with possibly the most uncomfortable journey ever - on the back seat of the minibus, right over the axle. We spent 2 hours cursing every time we went over a bump or hit a pothole and believe me there were a lot. If you are considering ever travelling on foreign roads by bus, I seriously suggest you find any other seat as you will otherwise end up wondering if you'll ever be able to sit down again! The minibus pulled into the car park at 11.00 am and we were a bit dismayed at the huge number of minibuses and coaches that were already there. We had expected it ... read more
