hard to still write about my travelling now that in fact i'm already sitting here back in vienna in my flat where i can see just a view chinese signs when i take a look out of the window at the chinese restaurant on the other side of the street. but i want to finish this blog as long as my memories are still fresh and i'm not completely back in my every-day life. the sleeper bus from dali stopped at some point around 4 in the morning and i decided to keep on sleeping rather than to make use of this break. when i woke up around 7 again we were still parking at the same point and the suisse guy (whom i falsely introduced as a belgian in my last entry) was standing outside ... read more

Hekou Border Crossing Just a short trip from Sapa to the Chinese border town of Hekou we experienced a less than warm welcome from the People's Republic of China... The not so friendly customs guy must have checked every page of my passport at least two times before asking a series of questions about places I had been and why I wanted to come into China... Eventually we passed through only to meet another grumpy official who wanted to check our bags. He found our 'Rough Guide to China' book and opened the first page took one look at the map and said "The People's Republic of China does not allow this material because the book does not recognise Taiwan as part of the People's Republic'' Despite our best efforts the official would not let us ... read more

We are in China again. Tonight we travel to Beijing, but for the last two days we've been in the capital of Yunnan province. Despite being August in Southern China, it is very mild here. Kunming is known as the 'Spring City' within China because of it's year-round mild, sunny climate and it's elevation of almost 2,000 metres makes it more airy than you'd expect from a provincial capital. Planes, trains and automobiles In leaving Laos, we experienced yet another epic border crossing. After an early morning bus from Luang Prabang, we were faced with a choice between spending a night in a two-horse, one-street town in Northern Laos and entering China the following day by bus, or hitch-hiking to Southern China on the same day. We opted to hitch, and our perseverance paid off. As ... read more

Hello from Yunnan - after a 9 hr bus ride from Sapa I was happy to arrive in Kunming ~10pm. The first half of the journey included tropical hill country and deep gorges with muddy rivers - even steep hills are cultivated with bananas etc and there are ponies by the road for hauling loads. As we got closer to Kunming roads got straighter and buildings more substantial mass blocks. Arriving was very confusing - no english speakers/info anywhere so couldn't ask for a particular hotel. Stayed in a place I don't know the name of and found the traveller set the next day at the Camillia hotel - such a change to have people to chat with in english again - even after 24 hours. Kunming is a very modern and friendly city of about ... read more

Thursday July 20th I was feeling okay when I woke up so I packed everything and went directly to the bus station. I bought a ticket to Guilin for 15RMB which I knew is overpriced by 5 but I figured it's an express so it should be faster. Well it sure didn't feel like an express at around 50km/hr on the highway but hey, I guess someone somewhere made 5RMB more of profit. I arrived in Guilin an hour and a half later and I tried to figure out when the buses were leaving for Guyiang and Nanning. I was a bit confused at first and went to the wrong bus station but the lady pointed me to the main one. I went there and it took me a while to understand the panel as the ... read more

Hello again and greetings from..... erm.... well....China. That's right, we've had a bit of a hiccup in our plans and the long and the short of it is that we are stranded in China for the moment and not Vietnam. So, you might be wondering what happened. Ok here goes... Yesterday, we boarded the sleeper bus bound for Hekou on the border at 6.30 pm even though it wasn't due to leave for another hour. We settled into our bottom bunks and waited to depart. the sleeper bus is a double decker bus but without an upstairs. Instead there are 2 tiers of beds in 3 rows along the bus. You lie with your feet facing the windscreen and your head is on a raised section. Under the raised section are the feet of the person ... read more

Well, seeing as we're stuck in Kunming for another couple of days, there's time to upload the photos of our time here. Kunming has certainly been nicer than anywhere else we've visited in China and of all the places to be stranded, we're glad it's here :-)... read more

It's been a quiet day today on this, our last full day in China. We had a lie-in this morning and then popped into the hotel travel office to book our bus tickets to Hekou on the Vietnamese border. It cost us a staggering 112 Yuan each for the 8-hour journey, which works out at just £8 - how cheap is that? And we've been led to believe that Vietnam will be even cheaper than China so hopefully we'll be able to claw back some of the overspending we had to do in Japan. We were due to meet up with David and Ashley again this afternoon but only David was able to make it. Rather than traipse around hunting for a guide book for Vietnam in English which we were highly unlikely to find, we ... read more

Today we were off to the bird and flower market with our new friends and this time we didn't leave anything to chance with the buses. We skipped the hotel breakfast which is proving to be too greasy for us and got to the bus stop nice and early. Surprise, surprise, because we weren't in a rush the bus turned up really quickly. It was packed to the brim with commuting Chinese so we took a chance and waited for the next one to turn up, which it did just 2 minutes later. We were at our meeting point with almost 20 minutes to spare :-) David arrived just after 11.00 am as arranged and gave us the happy news that Spring would be coming too. A few minutes later she turned up and said that ... read more

In Chinese tradition there is always a yin and yang that go together, like opposite forces of one another. How appropriate then that after such a brilliant day out yesterday, we were faced with the opposite experience today. I guess you just aren't allowed to have it good all the time. The problems started this morning when we wanted to make our hostel booking for our next leg of the tour which will be in Sapa, Vietnam. We have been using a tea house that has a couple of cheap but dodgy computers to update the blog but notcied there were several viruses and worms on the system which meant it wouldn't be safe to make a credit card booking online. Instead we decided to pay the high fee (10 Yuan an hour) to use the ... read more
