10/10/2010 - 15/10/2010 Dali turned out to be a holiday from my holiday, in other words I took it really easy the coming days. Luckily I had chosen the perfect hostel to chill. The 2 coming days in Dali my activities were shooting pool, drinking a beer (or more), watching a movie, chatting away... I met some really nice people there; Third day we were anxious to get up from our lazy asses and do something, so we ,of course, rented a bike (love to rent a bike in China) and explored a bit the surroundings of Dali; ended up with a flat tire though.... In Kunming the first day the weather didn't change so I extended my lazy holiday a bit more. I did have a walk around the city and shopping fans would have ... read more

10 trains, countless hours and thousands of miles covered we have landed in Dali on China's Western reaches. Clouds clutter the sky and form intricate patterns until they get clogged up around the mountains. Divided into old and new towns Dali is a place where you really notice changes in food, dress and language. It is most well known for its three pagodas which seem to be on every piece of tourist literature about the region. The old town is sandwiched by one of China's largest freshwater lakes on one side and mountain ranges on the other. To maintain our fitness levels we decided that we would climb Cangshan mountain which was directly behind our hostel. After an hours walk which took us to the car park at the foot of the mountain we came across ... read more

From Lijiang, Mom and I took a four-hour bus to Dali. It was a lovely ride through the hills. Just before arriving in Dali, we got stuck in a totally characteristically Chinese sort of traffic jam. I think we were parked on the not-quite-two-lane road for about half an hour with no movement at all. I'm not sure what happened, but I imagine a vehicle that was just a tiny bit too wide was coming in the opposite direction, and everyone else was trying to figure out how to cram over to the side to let him pass, and somehow everything got bottled up. It's just one more piece of evidence in support of the trope you always hear: China is developing faster than it can keep up with itself. Too many cars on the road. ... read more

Weekend trip to Fun Xian Lake. It was the first time I was in a real Chinese village. My only regret is that I never saw the monastery. I also realized that staying in cheap hotels and guest houses are not for me.... read more

DALI OLD TOWN 1/7/10 to 4/7/10: We both didn't sleep a wink, I’m not sure why we had trouble but we were so tired when we got to Dali a 5:00am. It was still dark outside and when we left the train station nothing was open. We didn't even know if we were in Dali or not because everything was written in Chinese. After trying to work out exactly where we were on the outskirts of our map, we managed to find a bus to take us to Dali some 18km from the train station. We still weren’t sure if we were on the right bus until we got off; I kept an eye on the compass the whole way. It wasn't until we were 1km out before our map finally came into play; a sigh ... read more

6/26/10 This morning we took a very long bus ride, about 6 hours, to Dali. We started at 8am, stopped for lunch around noon, and then got to Dali around 4pm. Nearly everyone on the bus was dead before lunch because they had been out clubbing the night before. After we arrived at Dali we checked into our hotel and dropped off our luggage. Note to self: next time, bring a carry-on bag with WHEELS. The duffel bag that I bought the day before for this excursion was heavy with a week’s worth of clothes among other items, and it was cumbersome carrying it all the way to the hotel. Perhaps not having limp noodles for arms would have also helped. We ventured out into the streets of the older, historical part of Dali, only to ... read more

29 April 2010 Day 23 Letter from the Editor!!!! We are now all the way over west in the Yunan province in a town/city called Old Dali City (as opposed to the nearby Dali City). Staying in a lovely guest house/hotel with a big family room & a covered terrace area outside the room - hence the opportunity to write while 2 girls settle down to sleep (eventually!!). This is a really cute place - walled city, bit touristy, but not too bad ( - no worse than Queenstown, though a local festival on just now has made it busier) & lots of easy walking. Streets paved & a lot of it mainly pedestrian. And one of the regional specialities is mushrooms - all shapes & sizes & very yummy! Also getting some real sunshine & ... read more
