before i start: yes, i did promise photos, but that was before they took so long to upload! anyway, you can see some of them on kt's blog at www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/ktw - but i'll put some of the sillier ones on this blog soon! i had this all written out very nicely, and was nearing the end, when some silly woman pulled out the cord to all the computers, so therefore i lost it all. i guess that's a lesson in "backing up your work" or something. oh well. actually, the other "oh well" moment today has been having my wallet nicked. there was literally no money in it, and nothing important at all, just the usual business cards of friends and acquaintances that i would've liked to have kept, as well as a holographic naked girl ... read more

Our local Uighur tour guide Aiysha met us at the Turpan train station. We then headed to our hotel for breakfast. Turpan is pretty difficult to get to - the train station is quite far from the city center, and the closest airport is in Urumqi, three hours away. Xinjiang is China's most western province, close to Pakistan, north of Tibet. However, the official time used in Xinjiang is Beijing time. The sun rises at 8:30 am or later in Xinjiang. So unofficially, Xinjiang is 2 hours behind Beijing. Very confusing. Flights and train schedules use Beijing time, but local restaurants, hotels, etc. use Xinjiang time. Silk Road: Since Xinjiang is close to the West, and more central to Asia, Xinjiang was an important part of the Silk Road trade route 2000+ years ago. Turpan is ... read more

Turpan is known to have the sweetest grapes. We visited a local family grower and was greeted by the farmer's 2 daughters. The youngest daughter is so beautiful - don't you think? The grape growing season is only from July through August. A typical local grower will make about 30,000 RMB. We purchased over 4 Kilos for 30RMB. They were the sweetest grapes we've ever tasted. Its sweetness is attributed to the extremely hot temperatures of 118 degrees. We sat in the farmer's grape arbor and enjoyed our purchase and listened to James, our national guide, express his political views on China. Tonight we are scheduled to go to Dunhuang by train. It will take almost 11 hours to get there.... read more

Sunday September 3rd We finally arrived at Turpan at 7AM, 13 hours after we left Dunhuang. The pain from my leg had been unbearable for the past few hours. There was no way I could find a comfortable position so I didn't sleep for longer than a few minutes the whole night. I was pretty tired when we went off the bus and was not feeling like dealing with the touts who was trying to sell us "one day" tour of the attractions around the city. I still asked for the price just to get an idea and he said 70, which didn't include entry fee that would be around 200 (but of course he never mentioned the entry fees until I asked about them). Tienh and I decided to get a bed first then decide. ... read more

Xinjiang is an interesting place to visit. According to one of the guide book, "This is the vast land farthest away from the seas yet full of profound traditions and vitality...." In the few days we were there, we experienced very hot weather in one day, and touched snow in another day. We even witnessed a hailstorm. ... read more
