"Tashi Delek!" Our local guide, Jam, greeted us as he placed a traditional Tibetan white scarf (khata) on our necks. After 53 hours of train travel, we were finally in Lhasa. Even at night, the city looked crisp and modern. Roads and buildings were neatly planned and structured. The city appeared to have a surfeit of marble supply because the roads and walkways were made from marble. Yes, marble roads. Still acclimatizing to the altitude of the city (3,490 meters above sea level/MASL), we could only walk very slowly. Any step faster resulted in breathlessness. The cold weather and calmness of the morning eased the pain that freak accident had caused me the night before . Everything was brightly lit. So there was no hot water in my room this morning, making showering especially delightful! At least it woke me up, and hopefully I don't get sick... Anyways, met my guide a little late (quarter past 9am) and we grabbed a taxi to Potala Palace. It's only 10-25 kuai to get anywhere around here, so we've been going that route in Lhasa since a private car is 300 kuai/day. I was really nervous about the Palace, as it's only my second full day here, and I still get winded walking fast. Potala has quite a few steps and steep ramps to get to the top, which would be no problem at sea level, but here, it is quite a workout! I don't know how many 60+ year old Tibetans passed me going up the stairs, every ... read more

So I seem to be the only English speaker staying in the hotel, and have started second guessing my choice. So far, I still saved a good $400 USD by going through this hotel/hostel (Mr. Yak). The staff is great though, and make all my frustrations seem less important at the end of the day. Anyways, today I woke up at 5am for no reason, and had trouble going back to sleep. I think I did just before my alarm went off at 8am, making waking up all the more difficult. I met my guide at 9am in the lobby, ready to see some of the sites of Lhasa. We took a taxi from the area in front of the hotel (past all the construction going on out front- I keep waiting to twist or break ... read more

TIBET: In Shangri-La once again This third trip to Tibet, a land that has been quite enigmatic to me, is more like a passage with a purpose. I am actually on my way to Nepal, and I'm just stopping in Tibet to meet the 3 Tibetan kids with congenital heart disease who will have heart surgery sponsored to my small NGO, Helping Children Heal (HCH) (www.helpingchildrenheal.com), through the organization Touching Hearts Tibet. Planning a trip to Tibet is never easy, but this being my 3rd time around, I’m now used to the procedure and miraculously I pulled it off with relativelly little time. ARRIVING IN CHINA: The first stop was Beijing, but I just stayed at the airport. I knew this part of the trip was the easy one. The possibility of problem is usually in ... read more

Getting to Lhasa was supposed to take just under two hours on a Sichuan Airlines flight. The airline offer a free early morning pick up service which we availed off. This turned out to be a shared taxi driven by a strange Chinese man who spoke no English and randomly pulled in to wait around. We were in plenty of time for our flight, but were still feeling a bit ropey from the rice wine the previous evening. He eventually got us all to the airport on time, and once there we were delighted to see the departures board flash up in English. We found our check-in counter, dropped the luggage, walked to our gate and boarded our flight. It was all going so well. They even fed us breakfast on the way and we had ... read more

After Gyantse, it was time to drive to our final destination - Tibet's largest city and capital, Lhasa. Perhaps the most easily recognised icon of Tibet, and one of the world's most impressive buildings, is the Potala Palace - the ancient summer palace of the Dalai Lama and home to countless treasures of the people of Tibet. So entering Lhasa, we expected the palace to be a dominant sight, surrounded maybe by old, narrow lanes and bustling street markets. What we actually saw on the drive into Lhasa was the complete opposite... wide, straight tree-lined boulevards, high-rise buildings and shiny new buses. Glitzy shopping malls, a brand new train station and shiny new apartment blocks. We were driving through Lhasa for at least 15 minutes before even catching sight of the Potala Palace - largely hidden ... read more

Day 490: Sunday 1 November - Leaving Beijing in the biting cold The cold in Beijing is biting as the three of us wait for a taxi to take us to Beijing West Station, apparently the biggest train station in Asia. In terms of luggage we are three very unmatched travellers. Bruno looks like he’s travelling for a few days not a few months, I have an average sized backpack and Patricia is carrying the kitchen sink, the entire contents of her wardrobe and maybe even her wardrobe and enough food to keep Tibet fed through the long winter months by the looks of it! We almost need a second taxi just for Patricia’s luggage.....what have you got in there girl? Or what haven’t you got in there is the more appropriate question! No wonder she ... read more

As my flight coasted into Kathmandu I could see the great Himalayan range looming visibly up in the distance. The fact that I could see them this time round was in stark contrast to five month ago. When I last left the place and visibility was near to zero. At that time it was impossible even to see the hills surrounding the capital, as they were clouded in a combination of dust and pollution. Apart from that difference, it was like I had never left the place. The five month inbetween seemed to have faded away like the dust that surrounded the city. I slipped back into the daily grind that entailed my life in Kathmandu the last time without even noticing it. I stayed in the same hotel with its tired looking and dank rooms, ... read more
