Hi All, Holiday times are here again. Decided to stay on the outskirts of Chengdu this time as there isn't much in the city that I haven't seen. So staying in Pengzhen, Shuangliu district in the western suburbs of the city. In Pengzhen is an 18th century teahouse with some remarkable propaganda art from the Cultural Revolution. Around the teahouse are some very old wooden houses which are fast disappearing in China. This is a really lovely area with the houses being lived in and used by local businesses, so different from the touristy old towns. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless ... read more

Hi All Stayed in Riwa which is where the ticket office is situated. We had wanted to stay in Yading village but at the ticket centre nobody was very helpful and we were told that places to stay were very expensive. Hotels in Riwa were also very expensive so we stayed in a Tibetan home with a family. The room, I use that term loosely, was a couple of pieces of plywood stood up in the corner of the room. The room had no ceiling so it was very noisy with people and animals coming and going. The bathroom was in the yard outside with Chinese toilets and a shower which was a dribble. The people though were very friendly and hospitable. The children were curious and loved to play games. Restaurants and shops were all ... read more

August 2nd - Heading to Aba - Dia 42 Woken up in the middle of the night by the surrounding Yaks becoming more curious. Had to hit the tent and shout a couple of times throughout the night since I literally had a yak next to my face. Almost around dawn Leonardo and I went outside to pii. Once we got back in the tent we started hearing, who knows how many yaks licking desperately at our pii. This sound continued for maybe an hour... Waking up first I got out of the tent to see the woman already working in the field. Both young woman were picking up fresh yak poops and placing them in a huge basket they had tied around their back. One was picking it up with her gloved hands! What a ... read more

Hi All After a hearty lunch and a recharge of the ebike we headed south of Daocheng to visit ReWu Temple. I must admit I have been impressed by the ebike as it took 2 people up a dirt road right up to the top of the mountains. The temple has many houses around it with some derelict buildings too. The temple was undergoing restoration and we had a chat with some of the men doing the paintings for inside the main hall. A kind man did unlock one of the buildings and he told us that the building was 600 years old. The view from the temple was absolutely stunning. Looking down on the main Daocheng - Yading road and looking over the mountains made me feel that I was truly on top of the ... read more

Hi All, With only one day in Daocheng we decided to hire an ebike and go for a ride around. The ebike cost 80 RMB for a day. We went out in the morning to visit ZhuJie temple which overlooks the main road from Daocheng to Litang. The journey there goes through some very pretty Tibetan villages and the road up to the temple is very windy and steep. The temple's was all shut because there was no electricity but a monk did let us into the main prayer hall and took us upstairs where there were some statues of Shakyamuni buddha and of the founder of the temple. The paintings on the walls were so colourful with many tantric images. After visiting the hall we had a walk up the mountain to see some of ... read more

Hi All. Had to wait a week for the horse festival but boy was it worth it, a real Tibetan experience. The horse racing ground is about 5 kms outside of the city and easy to get to. Just follow the mass exodus. They don't seem to race the horses but gallop up and down the fields doing extravagant moves like leaning right off their horses to touch the ground or to pick up lengths of cloth which are put out onto the ground. There were quite a few accidents as the field was very wet and slippery as it had been raining for a couple of days, but, no one was injured and all the horses were fine too. It has been 10 years since the last festival because of political protests. In fact there ... read more

Hi All, The altitude makes it difficult but it is so worth it. Only planned to stay here a few days but a man informed us that next week there will be a horse racing festival so we've decided to stay on a little longer. Litang is a dusty town on the Chengdu - Lhasa highway resting at about 4000 metres, around 13,000 feet in old money, above sea level. The population is largely Tibetan but there are also quite a few Han Chinese and some Qiang Chinese. Today had a slow walk up to the monastery which overlooks the town. The monastery has been destroyed twice in recent history, once when it was bombed in 1956 by the PLA when the locals rose up against collectivization in the Great Leap Forward and it was finished ... read more

Hi All, Really enjoyed these few days here in Kangding. Kangding is a city on the edge of the Tibetan plateau and has served as a trading post between Tibetans and Han Chinese for centuries. Visited 2 monasteries, Nanwu Si and Jingang Si. Both have a long history but the current buildings are relatively new as they were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Both are wonderfully colourful. We lingered longer in Jingang Si as the monks were at prayer so we sat in the hall listening to the drums, cymbals and amazing long horns which were being played as they chanted their mantras. There was a dining hall around the back and we sat and had a vegetarian meal with some monks for 5 RMB, 60 pence. One monk was keen to practice his English and ... read more

Hi All, Close to Kangding is the town of Luding. Luding has a Qing dynasty chain suspension bridge which was the scene of a battle in the Chinese Civil War. Red Army soldiers took the bridge and thus secured a safe passage over the Yangtze river allowing them to head north through the mountains of Sichuan. They were very brave men indeed to shimmy along the chains, as the wooden boards had been removed, whilst under rifle and machine gun fire. It made me feel a little queasy just walking over it. There is also a Monument Hall for the battle with information about the Long March. I must admit it felt a little run down, the gardens were untidy and the buildings dirty and after half an hour we were told the electric had been ... read more
