Hi all, I know its a bit naughty of us to moan about being cold when you're all snowed in! But, we are still chilly in China, reason being they don't have much heating here so all the buses are freezing & they like to keep windows & doors open! We felt like real softies but we miss central heating. Anyway we'll soon be able to throw the thermals out as we're going on the overnight train to Hong Kong tonight, i think its around 20 degrees there, bliss! Despite the cold we've had an amazing time in China, its actually been good to be here in low season as its very quiet & hardly any tourists & we've still been able to do all that we had planned. We had a lovely meal with the ... read more

Yangshuo at last! All through my first year in China I had planned to go but never seemed to have the time. Yangshuo is near the city of Guilin in the Guangxi province. I had a one day holiday for the New Year so I moved my days off around to create a five day weekend. Kim also asked for some time off and our Chinese friend Michelle made plans to come with us. So, on Friday (New Year’s Eve) we all met at the train station at Luo Hu to wait for our train. Kim and I met first but Michelle was running late. She had caught the wrong bus and was trying to figure out the quickest way to get to the station. In her panic she called her mother for advice and, unbeknownst ... read more

WOW !!!

We head out for the park and this is where Man Hill(Xilang Shan) is, said to resemble a young man bowing and scraping to a shy young girl represented by Lady Hill(xiaogu shan). Other hills nearby are named after animals like Crab Hill, Swan Hill, Dragon Head Hill. In the actual park were lots of elderly men playin card games and also a board game translated to 'Go' I think, all looked confusing but they seemed to be having a barrel of laughs!! Also in the park were multiple exercising benchs and bars and all sorts of cool things, quite common to see 75 year old men and women on manual treadmills and doing pull ups and things. Naturally i had to try everything!! Later on we just had a stroll around town and found some ... read more

After breakfast on the roof terrace we did some investigation and found that to get to Hainan we needed bus tickets from Guilin, so I had to get the hour and half bus journey back into manic Guilin!! It was quite nice just watching the world go by on the bus, the views were just out of this world, the 'karsts' randomly but fantastically ddotted about, and so many people were just sat in their garden doing nothing, why is it that my life evolves around computers and television and many more irrelevant things! I will take this into consideration when I come home!! On arrival in Guilin it was immediately back to the 'wild west', dodging bikes, motorbikes, cars, and trying to ignore the universal stares!! Bought my tickets and hoped that my translation to ... read more

Under the weather today, me more so. Laura went for some noodles for me, and she had corn on the cob, pretty much did nothing until night time. We head out for food and had pizza and burger and chips. Best part of the day was Laura running away from a spider the size of her head that was in the restaurant, so funny!!... read more

We had to leave quite early today to get the airport by bus. After security and check in we bought some spicy noodles and gobbled them up waiting for our flight. There was a short delay but no too bad. The flight was good, only two and a half hours, the inflight food was better, even better knowing what to expect when it came to our table! Rice, meat, a roll, and desert, good!! When we arrived in Guilin we had to get a packed shuttle bus with our bags practically on my lap and in the corridor(no health and safety here). The bus dumped us in the middle of Guilin and not where it was supposed to be either, with some difficulty we invested some time and finally managed to explain to a taxi driver ... read more

Tiny is an 18 month year old Rough Collie and the most over anxious dog I have ever seen. Understandable that given when he was a puppy he broke both of his front legs... Tiny is also a Communist. I know this because when returning to the hostel reception wearing my newly purchased "fine quality" China Red Star Communist T-shirt from the market, the friendly but bonkers girl behind the desk, who appeared to have learnt all her English from cartoon characters such was her child like excitable disposition, exclaimed "MATT, why you dress like a dog... TINY have also this fine T-shirt!" And so, as you can see, I now share a bond now with this lefty dog although I am hoping that Tiny merely leans towards Socialism rather than being a crazy, genocidal Stalinist. ... read more
