Staying on another Island, this time in land (it is surrounded by a river). We got here on Tuesday to find lovely warm weather so i am liking the south! We had read about a nearby market that has all sorts of livestock for sale, including cats. We found what we thought was the market but it was mainly dried food, a few shops on the backstreets had whole dead lambs hung up which was a bit morbid. We then headed to a park near our hostel which over looked the Pearl River. In the evening we ate in a fancy restaurant, we tried goose which was delicious and half a roast pig, but that was extremely dissapointing. All fat, no meat and also came with complimentary eye ball, teeth and trotters (with are very crispy!). ... read more

Never sure what to expect here in china. But I have come to understand when I see a stage....I know things are going to be big, very big. Whether its the opening ceremonies of my school's Sport's Day or the mini-american idol outside of the local Rainbow grocery store...it's always loud, full of decoration, costumes, and if at night, lights. Friday's Travel and Tourism Opening Ceremonies in Guangzhou did not disappoint. It was music was louder, the fireworks were grander, the costumes were more elaborate, the speeches were longer, and the line-up was more impressive. I still don't really understand the purpose of a Travel and Tourism Festival, but I did completely understand a day off of school, a free bus ride to Guangzhou, a free dinner, and paid admission to the opening ceremonies. It could ... read more

Before we run off on another adventure, here is the latest. I have been delinquent in my blogs, but only because the life of an expat wife is sooooooo hectic. All those craft days, coffees, and the inevitable shopping take so much time!!! So here is the latest from Dave and Diane…. I am going to break this into two blogs. I can put more pictures and it is easier to read. We felt that we were destined to never take a vacation. You see, we have been trying to find time in Dave’s busy schedule so he could use up his vacation days. It seems that since we have been here, that every time we try to go somewhere, inevitably, Dave had a meeting or the next phase of our relocation kept us from going. ... read more

Sports day..or...sports meeting...or...track and field day....whatever the day was really called...it was spectacular...in every sense of the word. The preparation, the excessive town dignitaries who attended, the amount of water bottles and water jugs purchased, the semi-permanent stage erected in the middle of the basketball courts, the newly distributed, perfectly matching uniforms given to all staff (teachers, administration, and cleaning staff), the 40 page agenda detailing all races, racers, and racing times, the hour long opening ceremonies, the two hour long rehearsal of the opening ceremonies, the laminated number bibs for each participant, the cheering, the excitment.....all of it.....everything put american track and field days to shame. I could have had a 2 day vacation...another 2 day holiday....to go off to someplace, well someplace else chinese. But before I realize... read more

Hi Everybody! The travel agency came through with our visa and we spent Sunday in Shenzhen. It was not a remarkable trip but we enjoyed the time that we spent with Lyn and Pat, 2 business people with Russell Stover Candy. They were going over to visit a factory that prints paper products for their company. We took a train from Hong Kong to LuWu where we crossed the border. We were limited to visiting Shenzhen since we only had a one day visa. Twenty years ago, Shenzhen was just a fishing village located by the Pearl River and across from Hong Kong. Now, it is one of China's top three high technology development centers. We found that there were not a lot of things for us to visit. It doesn't have the history of many ... read more

Because I didn't know what dim sum was until I arrived in China, I will explain. It is basically like tapas, if anyone knows of that, where many small dishes are at the table and everything is passed around and shared. It is a traditionally Chinese meal, especially in the Cantonese areas of china. Cantonese is a dialect of the Chinese language, that is spoken in the South, especially in Hong Kong. Cantonese and Mandrian have the same Chinese Characters, but completely different ways of pronounciation. I proudly cannot speak either, but make a pittiful attempt at Mandrian every so often. Enough background, now the dishes. Things have not but dull, but not "I crashed a motorbike exciting" so I thought I would throw together a little light meal of recent life activities in Shenzhen....enjoy! Field ... read more

Yes I made it to China, to the city of Guangzhou, or Canton as it has been know in the west for some time. It is quite interesting that this city has three million inhabitants, Greater Guangzhou has six million inhabitants, and still so few people have heard about it back home. Anyway, I immensely enjoy Guangzhou!! OK, like my guidebook says very accurately, the city is not exactly pretty, but it's a real Chinese city! Those who know me may know how much I hate overexploited tourist places packed with souvenir shops selling junk, I just can't stand it! And here there are hardly no tourists, hardly any westerners at all actually, which means no souvenir shops and no people begging for money or trying to fool you. People just get on with their lives ... read more

Hey there! How are things? Here in Guangzhou the 100th Canton fair has just passed and the invasion of foreigners is over - thank god! The Canton fair has since it started 50 years ago grown into a huge convention/fair with a seemingly unlimited number of buyers and sellers, from China and abroad. Twice a year - spring and fall - Guangzhou literally booms. Prices in restaurants and hotels increase and many Guangzhou citizens manage to make their living due to this event. I visited the fair one day; to see Alice. Considering how inefficient China usually is, I was positively surprised how easy it was to enter. Of course, I needed to bring my passport and a picture of myself - to get a perforated entry card (plastic cards are used everywhere, for everything). Alice ... read more

Oh my goshhhhhhh!!! Well we had an amazing few days in Hong Kong - and the tour started "for real" this morning. Hong Kong was mind blowing....such a huge city but SMOG SMOG SMOG. We have laughed till we cried and saw all the main sights - Vic Peak, Aberdeen, Repulse Bay, Stanley Markets, Temple Street, Jade Mkts etc etc etc. Dean was in awe of everything and very excited. This morning we had a 2 hour hydrofoil journey to Guandong and we are now in "mainland China". So far so good, but tonight is our first overnight train journey...so we will see!!! Lord knows how long we have this internet connection for, so for now I am going to post this, and I might come back to add to it. Also no idea if we ... read more
