First of all, I published a blog yesterday but for some reason an email didn't go out to all my subscribers, so make sure you read yesterday's blog first. We began our journey north today. Now that the rooting is over, we're off to the Shaoguan Pass, which sounds kind of like the name of the pass in Disney's Mulan where everyone gets bulldozed by an avalanche. Luckily for us, winter hasn't arrived yet and Mushu wasn't there with dragon-shaped weapons. The Shaoguan Pass is important to us Chinese from the Pearl River Delta (the "Alabama of China" as we've been told, minus the alligators) because it's where our ancestors migrated from thousands of years ago (sometime after we all left Africa and before 500 B.C.) Legend has it that the Chinese Emperor had a beautiful ... read more

Hello all, Happy 2010! January whizzed by cold and rainy. Winter in Shaoguan doesn't bring snow or severe cold, just a monotonous, damp cold that chills to the bone, even though the thermometer never drops below 40. All this will end soon so really an easy winter compared to what Chicago, Hartford and other places experience. Until this week, I've been buried in the crush of students' final exams and presentations. With that behind me, I'm looking forward to 6 weeks of holiday. I'll be in Hong Kong for 5 days, then Xiamen for 8, with a later jaunt to Guangzhou to experience the newly completed high-speed railroad. (The new RR cuts the 3-hour trip to 37 minutes --I've read the train averages 360 mph!) It will be fun to do some traveling. I've invited my ... read more

Happy Holidays! I hope you're enjoying family, friends and a warm home wherever you are! Of these three, I have one for sure and a pretty good attempt at a second -- wonderful friends and a 56F-degree warm home (better than the 40F outside!) -- right here in Shaoguan, China. Before the Fall Term is history, I've lots of adventures and typical, crazy Chinese experiences to tell you about. First, though, about my bat. A few weeks ago, an early cold snap ended and we had a Guangdong Indian Summer, with temps back in the 70's. A few bugs were back, which brought the bats out of hibernation. My front door opens to an outside stairwell and also, as a top-floor unit, I'm right underneath an opening in the roof. About 10 o'clock one night, I'd ... read more

Hello friends! It's been a while since my last entry so will need two entries to keep each entry to a reasonable read. Life this term has been extra busy. Instead of 12 classes, I'm teaching 16. Also, I've averaged twice as many coaching hours (4-5 per week instead of 2) since more students are asking for help prepping for English exams. In addition, I've had other major blog obstacles in the form of my on-again-mostly-OFF-AGAIN internet server, a nasty respiratory bug in early Oct. and then a cold in Nov. Now, finally, my internet server and I are both fully recovered (though the server gets the hiccups every so often!). Here are a few highlights. When last you saw me, I had just returned to China and it was HOT as blazes -- or as ... read more

Hello dear friends! Having signed off two months ago to return to my home in the States, I'm glad to be back in my comfortable apartment in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, China. My summer was a whirlwind, filled with fun visits to family and friends in CT, IL, MI and CA, along with happy reunions with my PA buddies, Valley Meeting "family" and Vanguard friends. In the background and non-stop, I was immersed in winding up the sale of my house and car, and the relocation of most of my possessions into one large and two small storage units. Ta-Da!! -- it's done! So liberating to be unencumbered. No longer any need for homeowners, car or life insurance. Love it!! I've included a few shots from my summer travels: a gorgeous sunset over Lake Michigan, so serene ... read more

Hi dear friends! I know I said No More Blog Entries, but today is my last day before summer vacation, so one last time -- feels good to close out the year by sending a few photos from recent outings. It's a beautiful June day, cooler and less humid than it's been. A good day to leave Shaoguan. The next two months are MINE. I'm looking forward to the break. It's been a busy few weeks. End-of-term teaching duties have been completed, moved over the weekend to a bright upper-floor unit, participated in an exciting workshop on entrepreneurship yesterday, and now, at last, my bags are packed and the fridge cleaned out. I'm looking forward to the trip home. I'll spend the night in Guangzhou, and then hop a Korean Air plane for a 24-hour flight ... read more

Hi Loved Ones and Friends! It's been months since my last entry, due to my being constantly busy in my "part-time" job AND enjoying so many new friends and experiences. I'm going to dispense with my NOTES approach as it just seems easier to write it all out and let you decide how much you want to skip through. Now that I've been in China for six months, I'm feeling ALMOST not like a visitor. The more I get to know my students and the other instructors, the better I like them. Friendly and kind, they are unfailingly patient and helpful. When I thank someone, a most enthusiastic "It's my PLEASURE!" is the reply, with a sincere smile. The people here are altogether very nice, and generally to be intelligent, polite, attractive and hard-working. My neighbors ... read more

Living in China brings amazing experiences everyday. For example, after my hearty 64-cent lunch of 5 small pieces of chicken, cauliflower, Chinese broccoli and rice, I sat down to write in my blog. A beautiful, breezy afternoon, I was enjoying the quiet, when I suddenly became aware that the entire family who lives in the building next to mine had gathered in the yard in front of their building. Now an hour or so has gone by and they are still out there, having a discussion about something. First they were standing for quite a while, now some are squatting as they talk. It appears to be more focused than just chatting, as there is a lively give and take. I’ve never spoken to the group since I don’t speak Cantonese, nor they English. So I’m ... read more

Great fun the last few weeks traveling around during Spring Festival (Lunar New Year). A few days after I returned from XiuShui, I was treated by the Tao family to a fancy dinner whose sole purpose was for me to get acquainted with them and their college-age daughter Rose (Tao Ying). Mr. and Mrs. Tao are highly placed government officials. They had asked their friend Mr. Zhang, dean of the Foreign Language Department, to connect them with an English-speaking teacher who wanted to see the sites of Shaoguan. Their plan was to have Rose act as tour guide, and practice her English in the process. Rose was eager to do this, and so was I -- a great plan all the way around. I went to the dinner with my Shaoguan map and sightseeing wish-list in ... read more

I returned last Monday from a wonderful weekend as the guest of my student helper, Dong Ping, at her family's home in XiuShui, in far northwest Guangdong Province. Mr. Wang is first (or second?) in command of the Communist Party in that district, so he is a high-status person in this small town of about 5,000. (Note: As of the late 1980's, Chinese officials no longer refer to each other as "Comrade" -- just plain "Mr." suffices.) He and Mrs. Wang live in a roomy, though unheated, cement house with 4 good-sized bedrooms and a hot shower. They have an enclosed courtyard in which sits the utility shed, housing the WC and the chicken coop (both tucked in with the washing machine). It was quite an adventure, particularly in the middle of the night, to ... read more
