During our stay, we stayed in 2 youth hostels, one to the north of the city and the other more central. They were both in Hutong areas, which are the old town with narrow streets, a little dusty and dirty, but full of people leading their everyday lives. Little shops line the streets, from tiny dodgy restaurants to double glazing workshops. Here, Phil found a taylor to take in his baggy shirt and take up his long trousers. The taylor did such a profession job! The city was gently restoring these areas to keep them, rather than them growing into slum areas. The hostels were helpful, we spent an evening watching Chinese acrobats, all children doing some fantastic balances, tumbles and jumps! We went to see the Great Wall and hired bikes for the day. We ... read more

I was wrong. It is possible to have a sunny day without smog in Beijing, as proved over the last day and a half. Once the heavy rain of Monday night and Tuesday morning cleared away, out came the sun between clouds, and it has been delightful with a light breeze and temperature in the mid-20s. Getting one's head around Beijing is hard. To begin, it is BIG! Think of the main business and top hotel areas of Singapore or Hong Kong, or other modern Asian cities, add them together then multiply by your age, and that is what Beijing seems like. Fabulous modern buildings of 20 to 30 stories plus are replacing the older ones everywhere, and there is some concern about loss of heritage and displacement of locals. The Olympics are dominating many things, ... read more

Well it has been a while since we last wrote but we have had a busy few weeks so I apologise for the late entries... After arriving back from Koya-San a bit earlier than expected after Sarah’s little mishap we had a few extra days to spend with our dear friend Kevin. In these last few days in Tokyo we managed to go to the beach, albeit in a gale force wind (but we were persistent), we also went on the rollercoaster ride which was really really scary, we took a tram over Rainbow bridge in Tokyo harbour to see the statue of Liberty??? Strange but true but apparently there are three of them worldwide…. These last few days were nice and relaxing and we had a bit of time to really catch up on ourselves ... read more

We've got to Tai'an and are starting to get our heads round mid-term survival here. Everything's pretty good and I'm sure we'll enjoy it all. But just for now I want to rewind and write about what we did while we were still in Beijing. On Friday we saw the Forbidden City, and Chris has been working on a post about this. He fell asleep before he could finish it on the night, though, and hasn't had a chance since, so you'll have to wait a bit longer to hear about it. On Saturday Chris was very unslept and rather queasy. He sent me off to do some tourism on my own so that I wouldn't miss out. So I put on my nice blue skirt and hardy walking sandals, made sure I had my destination ... read more

Before we say good bye to Beijing, we visited the Temple of Heaven. As you enter the park, there are hundreds of local people gathering together to practice different forms of exercise. There was an area for ribbon dancing, ballroom dancing, tai chi, kicking a small sand filled ball, and tai chi ball. I was very interested in the tai chi ball - it looked so elegant and graceful that I bought a set. I found that it is not as easy as the locals demonstrated but it definitely looks like it works ever muscle in your body. When we stopped and watched the tai chi group, the master was constantly correcting various individuals like a military sergeant. She looked like Sergeant Carter in Gomer Pyle getting in everyone's face when they slipped up. Once we ... read more

Temple of Heaven and Hutongs "That's China" MMM and I went to eat zha jiang mian at a restaurant the hotel recommended to us. The noodles where pretty good. Zha jiang mian is noodles with brown sauce made from fermented beans, meat, soy beans, scallions, etc. The waiters mix all the ingredients in front of you. A tasty mixture. However, halfway through my noodles I found a short piece of hair! At that point I was already pretty full and I just continued to eat. I reminded myself that I'm in China and I've experienced a lot grosser than a piece of hair in my food. Anyway, I showed the waiter and told him that I was done eating anyway. He showed the hair to the other waiters trying to determine whose head it came from. ... read more

Da jia hao! That's Mandarin for Hello, everybody! Impressed I'm sure. After an hour crash course in mandarin today that's about all I can remember. We spent 8 hours at the Asia Society learning how not to offend the Chinese. Here's hoping it all sticks after the 13 hour plane ride tomorrow. You all know how I hate to offend or insult, but I may be apologizing a lot these next few weeks. Oh boy. Everyone on the trip seems really funny, adventurous and very smart so far, and I think I am going to have a great time. My goal is to fall in love with China before I return. Was skeptical when I left Philly, but today I believe it is a big possibility. Better and more exciting blogs to come! Peace everyone! Zai ... read more

hey peeps: what's going on! now posting from the basement of our hostel in Beijing listening to a song about West Virginia sung by an unidentifiable singer - possibly Chinese, but it sounds great (go China...Wu Wu Wu) Tyler was right in posting that I crashed last night after our pilgrimage on the Si Ma Tai Great Wall. Initially, I thought it would be semi-crappy because it was remote and we had to bring lunch (lunch? I'm more of a bring money for lunch type). To cut to the chase, there was a mountain. Big. There were many steps leading up to each watchtower (about 65 on our hike)...and a couple dozen 30 meters high with a 70 degree incline. I didn't eat that morning because we went out the night before with Beijing locals that ... read more

After a well deserved early night last night, Hanmu & I got up early again this morning (if only I could do this during school!). We got some deep fried bread again and headed towards the Temple of Heaven. On our way, we stopped about 2km away for breakfast #2 - which seems to be a theme for us lately - and had some type of bean soup + freshly made tofu. We also had deep fried bread (LOVE!). We then walked about 2km more and arrived at our destination. It was really humid and hot today. At 7am it felt about 80C with dead air - but the pollution wasn't that bad today (think about extreme smog warnings in TO - that's a really good day in Beijing). The temple of heaven was nice - ... read more

We arrived around 7:30 and caught taxi's to our hotel. Todays agenda was to see the 'Temple of Heaven' a land make to ancient Chinese traditions. The site is massive encompassing many temples, exhibitions, parks, gardens and the main treat itself self. A spectacular sight let down by what is effecting all of Beijing in the run up to the olympic games next year- being renovation works. The temple looks brand new even though it has stood for centuaries. The afternoon was free so a few of us decided to explore this great city more. We visited the Hutongs, the townships that made up most of Beijing before the money arrived and these were the only ones that will be standing next years as the rest are being torn down to make way for the ... read more
