While most of the main tourist attractions are in the Dian Men and Chongwen districts, we were eager to venture out of the main areas and see what was on the other ring roads in Beijing. On our way from the airport we passed an area called Dong Zhi Men. There seemed to be a series of western outlet shops here, so we through we would attempt to spend the day in this area. We took the train up to this area and got off at Dong Zhi Men. This area/stop is actually a major bus terminal to outlying areas. The subway allows you get into the main shopping areas. The main floor has a few fast food shops and small shops. You can go up the escalator to see a series of boutique type shops. ... read more

We made it to Beijing!! Was a long journey, as we had to go through passport control, get a train to our bags and get currency before getting a train and two metros to our hotel. The metro was very crowded and we definitely got some looks! Knew the language barrier would be a problem when vinny almost bought us tickets to Chaoyangmen instead of Chongwenmen!! We slept all afternoon then went to a local restaurant in our hutong where they had no english menu. The waiter spoke a little english so we ordered noodles and beef and vegetables and had a savage feed! two bottles of local beer (Yanjing SAVAGE) and it came to €5 total! The next morning we were up at 6 and were collected for our trek of the great wall which ... read more

Endless, endless apologies for not writing sooner. I am consumed with shame to realize that it's been nearly a year since my last entry. Inexcusable! Except for this ridiculous fast pace of life here that occasionally barely allows moments of respite and reflection coupled with the inclination and available energy to sit at the computer and type. I have also been suffering technical difficulties with my MacBook and was no longer able to upload photos or utilize anything beyond basic surfing. This can no longer be an excuse however! I am the proud new owner of a fabulous MacBook Pro (which I am still currently getting to know the ins and outs of, so patience please!) After not replacing my technology in nearly six years it's a fabulous feeling to have access to a machine that ... read more

Last day in Beijing today, and we’ve spent it at the Summer Palace, north of the city. The palace was built in 1750, although it was destroyed by Allied Forces twice, in 1860 and in 1900 (both times reconstructed). It has 2 main parts: the Longevity Hill and the lake (which occupies 75 % of the palace’s total 300 hectares). Walking around the lake was one of the nicest things. It was foggy today, which gave the lake an air of mysticism. Boats crossing from one side to the other, bridges, buildings in the distance and many beautiful trees with my favourite autumn colours – we encountered several temples on our way up to the enormous main central temple (The Fragrance of Buddha – what a fantastic name!!). The views from here are very impressive. Inside ... read more

Aloha everyone, reporting from Beijing! M and I decided to head here since the Panda project is done. I was expecting something better than Shanghai and similar to Hong Kong but Beijing is exceeding all our expectations. What a FANTASTIC place! Amazing building-design (lots of hotels!), spaces as wide as you can imagine (today we were walking down a main road with 10 lanes, excluding bus and bicycle lane!), everything is clean, spacious, bright, majestic! And to make things better, it’s SUNNY! Yes my friends, finally enjoying some sun again after more than a month under cloudy skies. Yesterday we decided to just take a walk (not after finding a much needed laundry!) and with our map, headed towards something called the ‘Palace Museum’ (according to map) – once there, it’s obvious it’s a massive place; ... read more

We caught a taxi to the 798 art district from the Sanyuan Bridge train station, it took about 15 minutes. The 798 district is full of contemporary artwork. We would recommend more research before hand. We did not do much research and found that the map there was not particularly useful and we could not find any information centres. So, we ended up strolling around and tried to catch whatever we could in District D and E. We visited 3 galleries: UCCA - a contemporary art centre founded by Guy and Myriam Ullens Pace Beijing - An exhibition hall where we saw paintings of Yue Minjun's characteristic laughing figures Baiyaxuan 798 Art Centre - where there was an exhibition of Wu Guanzhong's water paintings. As we strolled along, we saw many interesting art scupltures and coffee ... read more

After our failed attempt to see Mao's pickled body laying in the centre of Tiananmen squarewe caved to the desire for some last minute shopping and went to the Lonely Planet recommended tourist shopping centre. After years in Asia this was one of the most intense shopping experiences....people where literally screaming and grabbing at anyone that walked past and offering starting prices so low it was almost sad the level of their desperation. The array of accents and foreign langauages spoken by the stall holders was incredible. We finished our very very long day of Dawn Tianaman, Forbidden City and shopping with one of the final tourist essentials for Beijing, a delicious dinner of Peking Duck. We left Beijing in true Chinese style, queing excitedly at Asia's largest train station with our packs on our backs ... read more
