The loud noises arising from the central market below reminded me that yes, I was in Asia. It was barely 8am, and since I had been out late the night before I had planned to have an easygoing lazy day. But still there was no way I was going to be able to sleep through all that racket. Feeling rough the way I was, I decided that the simple hotel breakfast was not going to be nearly enough for me, so I headed to Madison’s Pub for something more substantial. When I arrived the only people there were the French owner counting last night’s receipts and a friendly Khmer waitress. When the waitress laid my breakfast out before me, I knew I had come to the right place. The highlight was this huge fresh baguette. I ... read more

Of all the places I was going in Cambodia I was most interested in being in Battambang. Here was going to be a more untouristed side of Cambodia. Of course, as soon I arrived and disembarked from the bus there was a rush of tuk tuk drivers offering their services. One said he could take me to my hotel for $.50, but first he wanted to tell me about his tours. I didn’t really have any plans in Battambang anyway so I listened. He spoke very good English and I figured maybe he could actually give me some insight into the place. He told me about the numerous sights he could show me in one day, but I actually dislike cramming a whole day with sightseeing. We settled on him showing me everything to the south ... read more

Awakened by heavy rain, we worry our planned half-day trip by Tuk Tuk to Ek PhNom Temple may have to be aborted, however the sky brightens and we decide to risk it. Our driver is not Oeurm but a replacement, a friend called Somcat, apparently Oeurm had a more lucrative ride! As before, we head out of town via minor roads , following the river. After 20 minutes we meet a traffic jam and appear to join a procession of various vehicles whose passengers are all wearing white shirts/blouses etc. Somcat explains that today is the Buddhist Festival of Meak Bochea, one of the most holiest of the Khmer calendar. The name means 'Big Prayer', candlelit ceremonies follow the offerings of food and money, in order to gain merit. We could have bypassed the procession but ... read more

Tuesday is a free day. After breakfast we take advantage of the Hotel's complimentary bicycles, which are in a surprisingly good condition. Our aim is to exit the City in a general Northerly direction and find some quiet rural pathways to absorb the peaceful and friendly environment. The weather seems to be following us, it is overcast and very humid (again). We set off, following the river, and as usual are impressed by the friendliness of the local people and children, if smiles were currency most Cambodians would be rich indeed. Paula comments that everywhere we travail, it feels like we are on a royal visit and likens the local reactions akin to a Charles and Camilla moment. Leo baulks at this suggestion, so she drops the idea like a hot cake! We cycle for about ... read more

Incidentally, Battambang was named, but mis-pronounced by the French, it is actually Bat/dam/bong, which is something to do with their mystical ruler, who was black and had a magical stick, whose name was Ta Dumbong, anyway read it up! We are not won over by our hotel's lack of cleanliness. The Manager and Staff (currently family run by local Khmer) are friendly but have very poor English. This morning we breakfast outside our room. The food is adequate, however, the setting is very enjoyable and lifts our spirits. Our Tuk Tuk driver, who's name is Oeurm (sounds like Ian), arrives promptly at 10 am as agreed. He is a local Khmer who's Father survived the Pol Pot genocide regime because he was a Carpenter, and basically the Khmer Rouge kept him alive to knock down priceless ... read more

The weather remains a problem, and again had overnight rain so, as much as we have enjoyed our little oasis in Otres Village we are hoping a change of district might improve the weather, which has limited our planned activities, once again. Our itinerary involves a return to PhNom Penh as a night stop, before moving on to Battambang a total distance of nearly 400 km so, that's about 9 hours by coach, therefore, a stop over is vital. Cambodia's highways run North- South as a rule, so travelers often have to double back to major cities to move around efficiently. As we enjoyed the atmosphere and restaurants of PP, this is no hardship. We say goodbye to our lovely hostess Domo, who really looked after us at Om Home, we board our coach that takes ... read more

Harry took us around the local market today, where the Cambodians buy all of their food and other goods. It started off really nicely, we tried some lovely tapioca sweets breads, which tasted like doughnuts. We also tried lots of different fruits, they were all delicious - I love the way they arrange everything, such a rich array of colours. However, as we walked further into the market the sights got harder to bear. At first there was dried fish, which led to live fish jumping around. Then it got worse... Fish still moving even though they had been cut in half and their intestines were spread across the floor. Live chickens were sat next to their chopped up friends. By far the worse though were the frogs that were still hopping, even though they had ... read more

After our very luxurious mini bus we arrived in Battambang to a flurry of desperate tuk tuk drivers holding up their signs in the window and begging for our custom. After gaining some breathing space and a startled British couple, we opted instead to walk the 1.5k to our hotel. We left the British couple (Shaun and Freya) to find their hostel 'Here Be Dragons' and said we'd drop by later for a drink. It was getting late so we decided to go for a walk and found an amazing park where there were aerobics classes, power walkers, joggers, foot shuttle cock, badminton, outdoor gym equipment and Jacks favourite - stoned path reflexology. This was the first time on our travels that we'd noticed any place solely dedicated to exercise with so many people keen to ... read more

In Siem Reap I had heard of a boat trip you can take on Tonle Sap Lake, the largest in SE Asia, and eventually following Tonle Sap river downstream to Battambang about seven hours away to the South. Since my eventual destination is Phnom Penh this seemed like a fun way to cover some distance to my eventual arrival in the capital of the country. So for $20 I signed up for the boat ride and made my way to the docks about 6km south of the Siem Reap city centre. The boat journey would take me through some beautiful wetlands and an ever changing river system. The bird life here was extensive and incredible. You can learn a lot about your life by bird watching. Sounds strange, but don't knock it until you try it. ... read more

Getting there was fairly painless although extensive roadworks just outside the capital probably added a good half hour onto the journey. When the minibus dropped us off in the town centre it seemed as though time had stood still. As we explored further it was evident that many changes have taken place in the last three years or so. We stayed in the brand new Jasmine Hotel which is away from the centre and very quiet. We got off to a bad start when the promised collection from the minibus didn't happen, and then the air conditioning in our huge room with massive windows didn't work p... read more
