Christmas in Egypt 1953 Christmas and the Muslim holiday of Id al Adha occurred at approximately the same time, providing enough time off that I could plan a trip to fulfill my long time wish to see the pyramids. By this time, I had a new roommate. Caroline had arrived from Beirut, where she had been teaching in the American school. She was an American who had studied in an Egyptian university. When Carolyn learned I was going to Egypt, she insisted upon giving me a letter of introduction to her Egyptian friend, Soroya, a fellow student in the university who was now married and teaching in a Cairo university. After I arrived in Cairo, had checked into my hotel, and made arrangements for the following day, I called Soroya, expecting to squeeze in a visit ... read more

January 1981 Not long after my trip to the Drakensberg I met Paul and my holiday dreams were replaced by dreams of a wedding. I was so happy because I was gaining a wonderful friend, husband and travel companion all in one! We wanted to go somewhere special on our honeymoon. Money was tight as usual and most of our savings went into the wedding, but we scraped together some money to spend on our holiday. We chose to camp at a holiday resort in Plettenberg Bay, a small upmarket coastal holiday destination. Paul had been there every year for his annual holiday for most of his life and had fond memories of it and he wanted to share it with me. We wanted to make it a worthwhile trip so we went for a few ... read more

4 January 1979 Thursday. We had an interesting flight from Bangkok. We were seated in the last row, so the seats wouldn't lean back, and on an overnight flight that makes sleeping even harder. Some of the passengers were also interesting. There was a Jewish doctor and his wife from New York. He had many non-traditional solutions to our medical problems. For an upset stomach he recommended putting our stomach over the back of the seat and bouncing up and down. Anyway, we arrived in Cairo about 9 am, and took a taxi to our hotel. It was supposed to be a good hotel, but the elevator didn’t work and there were other maintenance issues. Just the month before that elevator had fallen and killed a number of Russians who were in it. Linda was too ... read more

No travel plans at the moment, so let's start from the beginning. How did my passion for travelling start? My first memories of travel stories? Spending evenings with my god parents showing us slides of their travels and then showing us all the treasures they bought along the way. How I drooled and wished that one day I would be fortunate to do the same. Slides of exotic places that they had been to, being projected on walls. This was in the days when it was more common practice and probably more economical to show slides rather than photographs. With almost life size images, at least to my young eyes, looking so enticing and interesting, I started dreaming of going on my own travels. I still had a long way to go though, as I had ... read more

We had a really memorable couple of bus trips that afternoon, taking 5 hours for the 150kms. The first, to the Tunisia-Algeria border at Bou Chebka, had several social stops, two mechanical breakdowns, and even an embarrassing pee stop for Joan. No hassles at the border, but it was a freezing walk over no-man’s land and about 30 minutes of business at the other end. The second bus was literally on its last legs, and took over an hour for the short trip into Tebessa. We checked into the Hotel Theveste and borrowed money from the local cop for a meat stew dinner. That was followed by an early night of washing clothes and playing cards, but there was no chance of a bath, with the whole bathroom under water! A late start next morning gave ... read more

The ferry from Trapani in Sicily across to Tunis left at 11am, and while the day was overcast, the sea was relatively calm for the trip. We mixed on board with a number of people, including Kiwis Nev & Liz, Ed & Heather, the brothers Leek whose old man worked with my father at the AMP in NZ around 20 years previously (pure coincidence!); German Gert, who didn’t quite seem to know where he was heading; and Brit Martin, also a strange fellow – plotted travels, chatted, and even had a few games of Ricketty Kate. We reached Tunis right on time at 7.30pm to a most unpleasant surprise – we were refused entry as we had no visas. We stayed on board for at least a couple of hours arguing the toss with local Customs ... read more

Diary 19720813 We went on a bus trip to Abeokuta, the major city about 25 miles from here. Most of the people went in a lorry (wooden seat and covered with slats) but since another girl and I missed the bus (it disappeared as we appeared) we got picked up by the car which was going in to supervise. In the city we went to the “Oba” or chief’s palace. It is truly a palace, in the Arabic form. Great celebrations were going on because he was just crowned last Sunday. All the women from his district were wearing the same dresses. 19720814 Early morning today! I almost didn’t survive! My first class was at 8:20 and since I was getting up so early anyhow, I tried to make it to Assembly at 8 AM. Another ... read more

Diary 19720811 I taught form 1 today which was really exciting. They get so caught up in the lesson once you capture their interest. Someone else started the lesson on oral vocabulary, and I continued just when they discovered there is a French word for everything. They wanted to know the word to name very object in the room. The school held a dance for us tonight. “Emperor Josy Ola and his band” played. This was a band like a Canadian high school group but the music is called “highlife”. It resembled all such dances, except mothers and little kids came! 19720812 This is Saturday but we have to teach anyway, because we need the practice. Wednesday schedule is being followed which is good for me. I had the fifth form (Grade 12) in the afternoon. ... read more

Diary 19720807 The oddest sensation today is a feeling that going to Nigeria is perfectly natural – there is nothing else reasonable to do, since we have been preparing so long. We, of all the surprises, were ready on time for the bus which arrived late at 2:45. The trip to Toronto was marked by torrential downpour and our arrival by confusion provoked by that airport. Our first plane developed some kind of mechanical difficulty so our luggage was put on another larger plane – 1 hour late. Supper finally came about 10! And we (3) played cards until 12:30 AM. 19720808 This day started about 3 AM when we woke up to breakfast with the sun shining, of course. Our only stop was in Dakar, Senegal, for fuel. It was the first time any of ... read more
