Getting to Zanzibar We left our hotel, the Jambo Inn, about 9:00 am for the ferry to 10:00 ferry to Zanzibar. Our cabbie, Emanuel, took us there without hassle and dropped us off in front of the Flying Horse ticket office so that we wouldn't have to deal with the touts. Unfortunately the one we told him to take us to was the wrong one., their's left at 12:30 pm, so we had to walk to the Sea Star ticket office. It wasn't far, but we did have to run the gantlet of touts, pickpocket, etc. to get there. We were happy to see thay they had assigned seating and that the cabin was air conditioned. Dar es Salaam is incredibly hot & humid this time of year right before the rains in late March. Not ... read more

Hey guys, Sorry for not posting in a few days proving hard to keep track of time out here, Nick doesnt even know what day of the week it is, ever!! Last you heard from us we were in 40 degree weather in Mossel Bay. Since then we travelled to Plettenburg bay about a 3 hour drive from Mossel bay, it is a little seaside town. We expected the pace of life to change from Cape Town and were quite looking forward to it really! We satyed in Nothando which was more of a home than a hostel, this was run by an older man called Charles and his wife. They were both lovely and Charles even gave us a guided tour on the way to the hostel from the bus stop! The room we had ... read more

Feb 17-22, Cape Town I dropped of my car in Durban, and I took a flight to Cape Town. CT is very cosmopolitan, very busy, very relaxed nad yes, extremely beautiful. The city is dominated by mountains and surrounded by the ocean on two sides. It has a very different feel for it then the other major cities of the country. Cape Town was the first city established by the Dutch in South Africa, which is reflected by its architecture. One of the first monument I visited in Cape Town is the Castle of Good Hope, built by the Dutch to defend the town in the XVII century. It was never been besieged by an enemy, and is still used by the South African army for certain functions, but it is mostly a museum. The walls ... read more

I was at the bus station at 8.30 all ready and waiting for the bus to depart at 9, like the timetable said it would. 9 came and went. As did 10. We finally set off at 10.45 headed for Lusaka the capital of Zambia, which in itself is classified as being 'Somewhere in Central Africa'. The first part of the journey I started to talk to a white Zambian who started to explain the problems black Zambians have. The jist of the conversation was that they are lazy and dont plan for the future. At first I put this down to racism however his seat on the bus was taken by a a black Zambian student. On our way up we started talking about what Zambia, and Africa, was actually like too live in. We ... read more

The spice tour was great. We visited plantations and local villages that had spices growing in the backyard. We saw how curry was grown, cinnimon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, coffee, and more. After the tour and march throught the fields we were taken to a village for lunch. we were seated on the floor in groups of five and fed delicous coconut curry fish, jasmine rice, chapati and local spinach peanut combo. When I saw food is delicious I mean better than normal. Most of Africa is not known for its delicacies. In fact most of the time its down right grim. Rice and beans or ugali and beans. For my faithful readers, ugali is the same as Malawi's 'nsima', or Zimbabwe's 'sadza' mazie gground up to make some sort of paste. its not delicious. But I'm ... read more

Today started off pretty well. Nichole and I had breakfast at a cafe close to our flat and made a friend named Rayne. He thought we were actresses because we were working on stuff using the script. He reminded me a lot of Ab -so I'll call him SaAb...lol. Stupid joke I know. Anyways we was really interesting to talk to because of how his insights into the racial/ethnic issues in this country. Day III at James House was a moving experience. We do this thing where we split the kids in groups and have them rotate through 4 workshops -props and scenery, location, acting, and costume and wardrobe. I was in charge of the last of this and part of my thing is to ask them what type of costume and make-up they want. And ... read more

Hello friends and neighbors. We are on the last leg of our 5 week travels in Africa. Our organized tour ended in Cape Town, where we stayed with friends and friends of friends. Cape Town reminds us so much of San Francisco, because of the Mediterranean climate, landscape, and trendy life style. Of all South Africa, Cape Town is the most modern, first worldly, cosmopolitan in style. After about a week of Cape Town, we still had over one week left before our necessary return to the northern hemisphere winter, so we decided to take a trip up to see Victoria Falls, considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. in order to do this, we flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg (Jo-burg, Janisburg), then to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, on the Zambezi River, ... read more
