We arrived in Cameroon on the worst roads I've ever experienced. Crossing the border from Nigeria on a Thursday morning, it was Saturday before we arrived in the city of Douala - a grand total of 400km in 2 and a half days! The dirt roads here are rendered impassable at times in the rainy season and one local described them to us as bad "beyond human comprehension" - he hit the nail on the head there! Miraculously, we only got bogged in the gluey mud once, when knee deep in slime, the truck had to be dug out and crumbled termite mounds used for traction (now there’s an interesting, and useless, tip for you!). Our base in Cameroon was the city of Douala, the largest city in Cameroon (though not the capital, which is Yaoundé). ... read more

Galib has been transferred to a village in the Blue Nile State called Ed Damazin, just 600 kms to the Sout East of Khartoum effective last weekend. The village borders Ethiopia. Rainy season starts next week until October, so he will be mosquitoing up to prevent any malaria. That entails taking pills to prevent malaria, 99 percent DEET and lots of netting. There was a rain storm last evening which consisted of "sideways" rain. So all of the rain came through the windows and soaked everything. About 1 inch in total. This made the phone lines inoperable as well as the computers. Galib said everything he owned, including his camera with the little chip was soaked. Except for his "Eye-Pod" which he slept with, it's like a blankey, or I guess...my replacement :). Everything will apparently ... read more

And the news from Dahab continues. First off - The diving. It's been AMAZING. I finished up my open water cert, with a couple from Australia. We had so much fun, and saw sooo many cool things we decided to do the advance course which lets you go to 100 feet, and also gets you to some amazing sites in the Dahab area. We had a different instructor for this part of the course. He was a very stocky man named Akmed, who resembled a general or someone from the army. He was kind of like the local dive hero, known by all, which was nice especially when you can slide through the various police check points littered along the highway. For the final dive (and deepest) we to the most famous site in the Dahab ... read more

Egypt - Jordan If I was asked to summarize Cairo in 15 words, I would say - charmingly chaotic environment, consciously obedient people, overwhelmingly polluted air, shockingly cheap prices, astoundingly rich history. Since Egyptian history is well documented and I know little of it, I will spare my rambles and leave it up to my photos. Instead I want to share some of my observations on the environment and people. In the Istanbul blog I said it's impossible to get lost there. Well, in Cairo it's very easy, and could be unpleasant. The moment I stepped outside of my hotel, I was bombarded with fast moving vehicles, slowing moving pedestrians, incessant honking, high pitched yelling, and flashy stores. I tried to navigate poorly marked streets with signs that disappear and reappear randomly, all the while dodging ... read more

Blogging from Philly, remembering Uganda: April 26-April 29th It was time to play the tourist my last 4 days. We headed 6 hours north to explore the border between Uganda and the Congo. The itinerary is a land/water safari in Murchison Falls National Park, and on the last day a visit to the Murchison Falls. ((Facts: Murchison Falls National Park derives its name from the Murchison falls where the mighty River Nile explodes through a narrow gorge and flows down to become a placid river whose banks are thronged with hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks and bufalloes. At the top of Murchison Falls, the River Nile forces its way through a seven meter gap in the rocks and tumbles 43 meters down, then flows westward into Lake Albert. The outlet of Lake Victoria sends around 300 cubic meters ... read more

hey everyone, i'm still around just had a busy last few days and have been away from internet. week three at CCS was great. it was really busy. School was good although one day, when we didn't have a swahili supervisor the kids had a riot in the classroom and there was nothing we could do to control them. there was a brawl in the middle of the tiny classroom. we kept repeating" sit quiet" and "stop" and "no" in swahili but the message just wasn't getting through. we ended up just walking out and gettting assistance, they only listen when the wooden stick comes out.... funny now, a little crazy at the time. on the monday night we went to visit a place called the united african amercian community association. it is run by Pete ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Serengeti National Park June 6th 2007

Emily and I left Saturday for the Serengeti, it's 400 km from arusha but took about 7 hours to drive there because the roads are pretty crazy. you drive up the crater, around the rim and then down the other side. the road is only paved half way there, then it's rough riding. we stayed at the Sopa lodge our first night, complete luxury from our little bunk beds rooms at the CCS house. we each had a double bed with a huge mosquito net curtain surrounding both beds, no more getting tangled in a net at night! Our first day of game driving was wicked! We saw lots of lions and unlike the the lazy lions in the Crater these lions were busy stalking prey! It was so neat to watch them attempt to hunt, ... read more
