Writing from Kampala. We made it here about 10:00 last night and slept this morning until about 11:00 am. Sarah (Marie's daughter) and her husband, Nate, picked us up at the airport and drove us to their place. They have a great house with lots of room, and nice walled in yard with trees and shrubs, etc. and lots of birds. Last night we had quite a storm. Marie and I were so zonked out that we just thought it was rain and some thunder. But, when we awoke we saw that it blew furniture off the back porch and brought down a branch from their big palm tree. About 11:00 am while eating breakfast, all of a sudden there was a loud crash and sound of breaking glass ... inside the house. It turns out ... read more

After Gorilla Tracking, Mark, Ioana, Alison & I headed to Queen Elizabeth National Park. QENP was the premier Safari Park in the 70s with large number of wild mammals. But, the retreating troops of Idi Amin and Tito Akello decimated most of the wild life for meat and money. During the last 20 years, the park has been slowly replenished by wild life, but it is still below 70s numbers. We took a boat ride on the Kazinga Channel in the evening and saw many Elephant herds, hippos, crocodiles, babbons, water buffaloes, fish eagles etc. It felt like we were in a zoo, but the large density of animals at this time of the day is because they come to the water for drinking before dark. Early morning next day we went on a game drive ... read more

It's two days until we leave for Africa ... running around frantically getting ready. Really nervous about taking a computer to Africa. We've heard that even cameras get stolen all the time. We've had our shots (Yellow fever, DPT boosters, cholera, tetanus, etc.). We were given a antimalarial prescription for Malarone, but at $190 for each of us we decided to use Doxycyclene ($9 total for the both of us). more later. ... read more

Our journey to track the Mountain Gorillas began in Kampala Bus Park at 6:30 am. The bus only started at 8:00 am as it is common practice for the bus owners to start only after the bus is full ! After a loooong day on the bus, we reached Butogota around 5:30 pm. We got a pick-up ride to Buhoma, the entry to Bwindi National Park. We stayed at Buhoma Community Bandas, a non-profit organization that helps the people that have been displaced from the forest. Our Banda, a hut like structure with modern amenities inside, was in a prime location - with front row seats to the see the amazing jungle we plan to visit the next day. At dinner, we met fellow travelers who were there to track the mountain gorillas. We met Mark ... read more

The moment we landed in Entebbe, the main airport in Uganda, we realized that we were in a tropical country. The landscape is so verdant, with plenty of banana and sugar plantations everywhere. The first morning, we took a matuta ride - a local shared minivan, into the city centre. We realized our ATM cards don't work here and our US 100 bills are not accepted ! Apparently, only $100 bills dated 2000 and above are accepted - to reduce conterfeit money. Bottom line: We had to scamper to get money using cash advances on our credit card... After a long day, we had some excellent Indian food at Haandi. As many of you know, there is a sizeable Indian community that has come back after Idi Amin had kicked them out in the 1970s. I (Gerry) read an inspiring story in the 'New Vision' (my favourite newspaper) about a Ugandan guy who has set up the 'Rwenzori Finest Coffee Company' in the mystical Mountains of the Moon which borders Rwanda. The small coffee farmers (they're not pygmies - they just own small amounts of land each!) used to sell their coffee beans for a pittance partly because the quality wasn't great and they had no choice of buyer. So this guy comes along and helps them form cooperatives and trains them to produce top quality beans which he buys from them for a fair sum of money. Now the farmers can afford to send their children to school and improve their living environment. The company has now secured a contract to supply Waitrose supermarkets in the UK! The new-found optimism ... read more

Greetings from Uganda! For those who don't know, I (Gerry) am here for 6 months working with our great old friends, Sam and Eva who run an organisation called 'Uganda Family Resource Link'. They have done wonders here (the project in the village is called 'Bushfire'), within 2 or 3 years they have built 4 homes for 60 children-at-risk (mainly orphans), staff houses, a huge community-cum-church hall, a farm, a medical clinic and they are half way through building a primary school! It has grown so quick Sam feels somewhat overwhelmed and was keen for me to come and help organise things and give some management advice. I like the idea of being a management consultant and charging thousands of pounds per week for my services! But then that would be slightly unethical given that lunch ... read more

Imagine: You and 13 others are in the high court. The judge grants you bail. But, then the court is invaded by a group of armed soldiers wearing black T-shirts. So, knowing that the armed men known in Uganda as the Black Mambas are not exactly a welcoming committee, you ask the court to take you back to prison. For protection, from the tender mercies of the Black Mambas Urban Hit Squad. Welcome to Kampala High Court. Welcome to President Museveni's Alice in Wonderland concept of 'justice'. The High Court's top judge James Ogoola described the incident as "a despicable act and a rape of the judiciary". He made comparisons to the dark days of Idi Amin. The legal profession staged a one day general strike on Monday 28th November in protest. The fourteen men who ... read more

12-13 octobre 2005 Jinja (Ouganda) to Nakuru (Kenya) Une journée complète sur la route. 16 heures!

Facile à trouver ... read more
