Uganda day 1 One and a half days to get to a swamp I am in the 60th country I have been to so nearly a third of the way to a full house! Getting here was a bit fraught at times but nothing like travelling with Qatar airways thankfully. The flight leaving Birmingham was about an hour late leaving with no explanation as to why. Then we spent 26 very long minutes traversing round Istanbul airport before the plane finally came to a standstill. This left us with forty minutes until our next flight was due to take off. We rushed off the plane, ran up some stairs and an escalator, ran to the dpertures board and….our next flight was running 75 minutes late…which was useful. On previous transfers at Istanbul we’ve had to go ... read more

Uganda day 2 Chimps, warthogs and a rabbit plus an unintentional night safari. You can’t beat an ice cold shower in the morning, especially when you’ve not had one for two days. Actually you can. With most things. Let’s just say we rinsed a bit and Claire made some interesting noises. The alarm had gone off at 5:40 so we lay in bed until the next one at 5:45. Breakfast was bananas, pineapple, bread and however you wanted your eggs. I said I didn’t eat eggs and filled up on bread and fruit. Then the chef very kindly rustled up some cooked carrot and cauliflower. I was full but ate and enjoyed it anyway. I mentioned yesterday about not getting wound up by people. Didn’t last long. After a short car ride we arrived at the ... read more

In Fort Portal the gateway town for the Kibale Park we find the Dutchess restaurant/hotel. Run by a Dutch couple the LP considers this to be one of the best restaurants in the whole of Uganda. Not wishing to miss this opportunity we stop for a light lunch and then are delayed as - no surprise - after lunch the Rav 4 won't start. We call the hire company and within 15 minutes a local mechanic arrives and after some good diagnostics traces the problem to a poor transmission connector. This meant that the electronics dig not detect that the transmission was in Park so disabled the ignition circuit. He easily fixes this, but leaves me a wire so I can short this out just in case we have the same problem again. It turns out ... read more

Using Fort Portal as my home base, today I was off to another national park: Kibale. The draw here are the chimps. Like gorilla trekking, if you don't check in at the ranger station by a certain time, you can't make the trek, and we barely made it. I'm still not sure why we were so late. We got there just as they were dividing the groups up and assigning them their rangers. I was assigned to a group of four women who were traveling together. When they were told they were being assigned a woman ranger, they stood up, clapped and cheered, and told the lead ranger they were glad they were being assigned a woman. They even made their way to the ranger to hug her. Oh dear. Our ranger had to be the ... read more

Week two in Ruhija brought with it many new many new experiences not to mention the comfort of a routine and and sense of settling in. Keeping with the practice of rising early each morning, I put the water on the stove to boil in preparation for daily tea and coffee for the group. While this may seem like a straightforward task, it takes considerably longer when the first requirement is to heat charcoal on a clay oven. I believe I have the entire process of coffee making down to approximately thirty-three minutes which is a considerable improvement from the first time which took over an hour. I will say it is well worth the wait however as Ugandan coffee easily rivals any of the world famous Kenyan or Tanzanian varieties. Breakfast usually consists of either ... read more

Today was mostly a travel day as we went from Jinja to Kibali National Park, via Kampala. We had our mini breaks, lunch stop, more mini breaks and took lots of photos from inside the vehicle and just absorbed up the culture and day to day life of the Ugandan People. Long travel days can be, well long, but at the same time if you make the most of it you do learn a lot. Our guides Sam and Paul (we had 2 vehicles so rotated) were always happy to answer our questions about salaries ($100-$350/month USD), vehicles (motorcycles for $10,000USD or a nice used 7 pax van for $20,000USD), food is very cheap and chicken, fish, potatoes, plantains are common and beef and rice are a treat. Gas is running $1USD/litre so fairly high relatively ... read more

I’m currently sitting in my room, in the dark because the power is out due to a wicked thunderstorm, and since there is nothing else to do other than sleep, I thought blogging would be a good idea. It’s pouring unlike anything I’ve ever seen back home on the prairies and I’m listening to Bon Iver, because “Skinny Love” sounds that much better against the backdrop of heavy rain. I’m also still behind on blogging. No surprise. We have been continuing to visit different communities each day to pull blood for brucella testing and at the time of writing we have only a couple more community meetings to go to. Many of the communities are spread out with homes being a decent hike from one another, so often we can only make it to one or ... read more

De afgelopen week ... read more

Afgelopen weekend ... read more
