Spent all day with Adrift, the original Nile rafting company, whitewater running the Victoria Nile starting from near its source in Jinja at Lake Victoria downstream (Northwards) roughly 45 km. It was loads of fun and got to meet some pretty interesting people. But, it was exhausting and took all day. I left the hotel at 07:30 and got back at 20:30. The company was very professional, and delivered on everything they promised. From excellent guides, to breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a very safe but adventure packed day. The bus came pretty well at the promised time for the 7:30 AM pickup. They had an ipad app for registration. Everyone registered while riding in the bus. No paper work! No messy hand writing to decipher. Don't know why I filled in marketing/anti-privacy fields such as ... read more

Found an Internet cafe that let me use my own computer. No wifi. Just a long cable with an RJ45 connector. No DHCP either for automatically detecting new connections. Had to manually configure the IP and gateway addresses. The connection is very fast too. Perfect. Today was mostly a walking day. Must have walked about 7 or 8 km. Also took several Boda Bodas ... these are motorcycle taxis where you ride as the passenger, just like in Vietnam. They get their name because this used to be the way to get from Border to Border in Uganda ... so Boda Boda it is. Only had one near miss when on a Boda Boda, when he had to brake hard and skid because a pedestrian was unaware we were behind her. Managed to hold onto the ... read more

N.. is off on his Central African journey to meet up with E.. and W.. in Lusaka in 3 weeks time. Left our Doha villa at 00:40 to catch a 03:45 Emirates pond hopper to Dubai to catch the morning Dubai-Kampala flight. At that time the ride to the airport took only 20 minutes. At the airport, the guy in the lineup in front of me was our villa neighbour with his infant daughter. His wife had left for London already and he was travelling to Vancouver via the Dubai-Seattle Emirates direct connection with his daughter in a car seat. She slept the whole time while we were waiting, and only got up when the car seat had to be put in the cargo hold. Ofcourse flying to Seattle is a lot cheaper than flying to ... read more

Hi all, It’s just less than 2 months since I left Uganda on 3rd of June… and I’m now on my final Uganda update... Thursday 31st May – GULU to KAMPALA continued We arrived into Gulu after the drive back from Kidepo Valley National Park and had to find somewhere to spend the night. We went straight to the Alcholi Ber Country Hotel and they had room (they’d been full when we’d tried a couple of weeks ago). This was the only hotel I’d managed to find information on before arriving in Uganda so it was nice to finally stay there. It’s nice, not as modern and plush as Bomah but if I hadn’t stayed at Bomah I’d think the Alcholi Ber was absolutely brilliant, and it was about half the price (roughly £10 a night). ... read more

I ended up spending almost a week in Kampala, when I had only planned a couple of days. At first, I had to spend a couple of days running around the cities to get some of my possessions fixed or replaced, as well as make a few purchases to send some stuff back home. None of this was easy. Making your way around Kampala is pretty exhausting. You look at a map and the streets look like they have been arranged in the same way as a plate of spaghetti would be. Down around Luwum St. is your trademark African city street scene. The people seem to multipy each street you pass, as well as the street vendors. The Owino market is close by and is a maze of stalls selling all sorts. It took me ... read more

Try as I might I have not found anyone who can translate ‘thank you for having me’ into Luganda. People look puzzled. It was eventually explained to me (after it had become quite apparent) that there is no gratitude that you should show your host in Baganda culture. The emphasis is on the host to show gratitude. For a Bugandan, when a visitor first comes to your home you say you are pleased to see them (whatever you think of them), give permission for them to enter and the command them to sit. Command is an important part of Luganda, it has its own tense and forms a large part of everyday speech, which initially comes across as rude to Brits used to asking everything. Then follows the introductions, a series of questions in which you ... read more

So we are now in last few days of our time in Kampala and we celebrated with the hope for life Katanga team with a meal in a local restaurant called Sams. It was a meal to mark a good 3 months of friendship and teamwork. Before I talk any more about our evening I will give you an insight into our time in Uganda regarding food. For those who have read previous blogs, you will understand that food is a big part of my life. We came to Uganda for 2 weeks with a group including doctors, Reverends and married people, all things that Ugandans love. Because of this we were treated to full buffets of food almost every lunch and dinner. They heavily indulged our plates with food, specifically a steamed banana called matooke. ... read more

This was a blog i forgot to put up a while back Monday the 31st was the start of a busy month ahead remaining in Kampala. We started the day again at 8 30 in Katanga doing some more planning and organising of paper work before another meeting Monday night. After school in the morning we went to visit a secondary school in kamwempe in which our friend Moses works as a history teacher. This is the same friend who is part of the team to set up ‘hope for life’ project. We wanted to visit a school in Uganda to see how they worked and how they differed to what we experienced in England. Brilliant High School is a secondary school for pupils aged 13-18. It is also a boarding school that houses about 400 ... read more

We now only have a week left in Uganda before flying for South Africa. We have a trip to Entebbe Zoo, a few meetings, and a final meal with the ‘hope for life’ team, see all the kids and say goodbye, a potential marathon, Freedom church and we need to make sure we take time to take in everything we have experienced here in Uganda. Our past few days have been pretty interesting; our time came to an end renting of the place we have called home for the past 2 months. We have had some pretty cool memories of this place but it was time to leave. We left early Tuesday morning at 6am, with all our stuff, and went off to Jinja for 3 and a half days. We still have lots of work ... read more

We have done a few flights but we still had time to explore more of Entebbe. I went sailing with Alec on Vic Lake and we saw a Spotted Neck Otter passing by us in the water. On the doc locals brought their goats to take them to an island where they farm. Another day Jaco and I went exploring and we found a kind of a harbor. Later we went to Aero Beach where we descovered one of the Boeing 707's that was used in the Raid on Entebbe - to rescue the Air France passengers that was hijacked by terrorists in 1976 and was given permission to land at Entebbe by Idi Amin. From the road leading to Aero Beach I managed to get a photo of the UN aircrafts and ours too...indicated by ... read more
