They say that when a muzun-gal travels alone (especially in places like Africa and South America), that they will have....problems. People will hassle them more, hit on them, etc. Women, travel with a friend(s). But what I have never heard is that when a muzun-GUY goes about alone, things can get....interesting. Not bad, per say, but interesting. Here's the story. Location: BACK IN KAMPALA, BABY!!!! WOOOHOOO!!!! Time: around 1300 hrs Characters: Kevin, some random guys and a VERY random girl The plot: I arrived in Kampala on Thursday night and headed up to the Baha'i House of Worship (hereafter referred to as "the Temple"...but its not really a temple, its just shorter like that) where I am staying. No, not IN the Temple, but in a guest house on the property. Two minutes out the front ... read more

Day 3 of substitute teaching has ended better than the other three. I always knew that substitutes had it hard, but I always thought, all they really had to do was babysit and keep order. Which is still sort of true if you have lesson plans and something to teach. But... I was asked on Friday if I could teach Math on Monday. I actually thought this was a bad idea. Not that I minded teaching but the students had a teacher and I thought with language and what what that they should keep the same teacher if they could. Turns out that one teacher was going to a wedding. I wasn't sure how they would get by with me just teaching one class of math but mine was not to wonder why. So Monday morning ... read more

After three days of travel we made it to Uganda. We are staying in Maska right now. The kids are adorable, and people and so loving. As far as the projects go, the well is down 9 meters which is good, and we are trying to get the matterials to starte on the filter. Tomorrow we are going to starte cementing the floors in the class rooms, and we have already started on stairs to get into the class room. The Wheelers are getting some equipment for more solar lighting today, and will be able to make some progress there tomorrow. Everyone on the team is doing well, and having a good time! Janeal check Becka's e-mail. Hopefully we will be able to post some pictures next time.... read more

Q: What happens when you stick a visual thinker with a language learner and stick them in a car for twelve days? A: This blog Instead of detailing every single thing we did on safari, Shelley inspired me to trade in the pen for the watercolor pencil and draw mind maps (an activity we do with kids at work) of our days on safari in Africa. Admittedly, it's much better than trying to cram in every last detail about 12 days of events and instead, coming up with a visual rendering of our journey, even if it does look like it was drawn by a fifth grader. My initial plan was to have very little text, almost none. Just a few bullet points for highlights with the official stats of the journey (they are now ... read more

Ahora ... read more

It's been a while since I last wrote to you all, so thought I might catch you all up on our adventures. Mauritius was beautiful as the post cards/pictures normally show, however there is a whole other side to it too - the slums, to which we pretty much stayed around though our accommodation was alright. We were there for 4 days, and due to jet lag, we pretty much did nothing for the first 3. On our one active day, we went on a day tour down the west coast of Mauritius. We went to Bella Mare which is the place where a lot of expensive brand name clothes are manufactured, and they sell them for less than half the price there (though still too expensive for me to buy.) We then went on a ... read more

I came in and out of Uganda three times and will clump it all into this blog. The first time was mentioned in my Lamu entry, which accounted my rafting adventure at the source of the Nile with Chi... which was just awesome and one of the most exciting things I've ever experienced in my life. Part of the fun had to do with the fact that we had a great raft guide, a freelancer named Gram, who made sure we had plenty of outrageous, acrobatic flips. Shortly after that, I went to the DRC to track the mountain gorillas and came back to Uganda and spent almost a week at Lake Bunyoni. Megan and I would have totally stayed there for weeks had it not been for our 7-day transit visa. Lake Bunyoni has ... read more
