We saw ZINJANTHROPUS. Yes. We really did. If you don't know what that is, you are an idiot. Or not an anthropologist. It is that big a deal. We saw him up close and personal (that is, I was able to touch the glass case he was in because hello, he is only one of our oldest ancestors) and I am totally, absolutely planning to exhaust the bragging rights to everyone and their mothers, strangers walking by, and people I share the light rail with that I wrote my name down on the holiest book to anthropologists (besides the Bible, Torah, Koran, etc.) containing all the people who have ever worked on or have been priveleged to see Zinjanthropus since he was unearthed. Why yes, I am pretty awesome, thank you. I already know you are ... read more

After the disapointing experience in the Serengeti, we were pleasantly surprised to get exactly the opposite experience in the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is a fairly small area in comparison to the Serengeti and has it's own extremely diverse ecosystem. We saw an incredible variety of wildlife in close proximity to the jeeps. The highlight of this experience was the pride of lions that approached the road and used the jeeps as cover while some of them hunted zebras. This of course attracted every jeep that was in the park to the same spot at one time. One of our jeeps was lucky enough to get sprayed by a lion. We had a lioness stalk right next to our vehicle. What an amazing experience.... read more

The next day we drove down into the crater which was an experience in itself, the road is a very narrow track with a sheer drop on one side. We then headed out along the crater floor along dusty bumpy roads looking for animals. Unlike the Serengeti the animals tended to be a lot further away from the road. We did see a rhino, but he was about 1/2 a kilometre away. I managed to get a half decent photo that lets you see that it was actually a rhino. The scenery around the crater was very spectacular. We saw two groups of lions, one was a mother with some young cubs, these were no more than 50 metres away on the edge of a streem. We also saw a large male sunning himself out on ... read more

After another game drive in the morning, we had lunch at the camp site, then packed up everything and headed towards Ngorogoro crater, on the way out we took a small detour and found two cheetahs, they were laying down on a large mound and no more than 20 feet from the trucks. The crater was vastly different from the Serengeti, we camped on the rim which was very cool at night. We had zebras grazing around our tents during the night. This camp site also had caged rooms for cooking and eating. There were a lot of people staying at the camp site and the dining cage, although very big, was quite crowded. There were showers but only the women's was hot, so a few of us men sneaked in late at night and had ... read more

"Life's greatest adventure is finding your place in the Circle of Life..." ...Or so say the creators of The Lion King. Whatever life's greatest adventure may be...after Kili, Dad and I were off for yet another adventure - this time into the animal kingdom of Africa. As for the story about this adventure, there are no tales of high-altitude dizziness or exhausting climbs...it was largely an experience of oohh-ing and ahh-ing at some of the most beautiful creatures that nature has to offer. The animal encounters were too numerous to fully cover here, so I'll hit a few highlights and then let the camera do the rest of the talking. Mr. Khalfan's Wild Ride Safari - which means "journey" in Swahili - was certainly a change of pace from camping and not showering for a week. ... read more

A short distance from the discovery of three million year old remains of "modern" humans (Olduvai Gorge), Ngorongoro Crater is a perfect site for the legendary 'garden of Eden'. In addition to being the home of approximately 25,000 large animals - wildebeest, buffalo, rhino, hippopotamus, lion, elephant, hyena, warthog, leopard and cheetah - Ngoronogoro is also the world's largest, unflooded, unbroken volcanic caldera. Following our departure from the Serengeti, we camped on the crater's edge, which at a height of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level, was very, very cold. To make matters worse, my stomach had turned on me and at about 11pm I had to clamber out of the tent and make my way through the cold, dark night to what passes for toilet facilities at the campsite. After successfully navigating my way through ... read more

Okay, now this is the third time I have tried to input this info on an "Apple" and I am not having much success, being totally unfamiliar with it. We had a fantastic day today visiting the Hadzabe tribe. We traveled over rocks, through dry river beds and muddy fields with the help of a local guide - no other travelers insight - it was wonderful. We have had so many memorable moments on this trip. It has been interesting traveling with a group of complete strangers but at least the one thing we all have in common is our love of traveling. There are 18 guests, 4 drivers and, of course, our leader Martin. Interestingly enough most of the guests are from the Vancouver area - which gives us two things in common - our ... read more

My plans to write a detailed blog on our trip with Martin is proving a little more difficult than I thought. The internet is not readily available in some of the magnificent spots we have been staying. So I am just going to give a general overview while I have the chance and just hope I can get in contact again a little further into the trip. This tour has exceeded our expectations in all ways. It goes without saying that Africa is amazing, just as I always knew it would be. We are thoroughly enjoying our tour with Martin and Adventures Abroad. It is interesting to watch him at work. He is a great tour leader and everyone loves him and even those who have not travelled with him before have heard of his reputation. I ... read more

After Kili, I went on a 6-day private safari to Tarangire NP, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti NP, and Lake Manyara NP. Had an excellent time, but felt very inadequate with my teensy-weensy 28 to 300mm lens next to the bazookas being shouldered by other paparazzi. Whilst I have been previously on safari to Botswana and South Africa, I did see a few animals and birds that I hadn't seen before; plus it was baby season - aw sweet!! Also had the opportunity to witness the beginning of the migration. But you can never go past the big cats. Enjoy!... read more
