After a rather hectic week at the day care center, the weekend came just in time! Hectic, you wonder, well, part of the hectic part on Friday was that our head teacher Vicky (the one that speaks a little english, had her day off, so I was by myself, well the lady that cooks the porridge for the kids was also there... ) so anyway if you can picture 90 little boys and girls on a Friday, and then try to picture to control them from hitting, biting, chasing, ... eachother, let alone try to have them enage in creatice activity... you can picture my day. ... I was able to get them fired up to draw different types of fruit for about an hour.. well it takes that long because they all share the crayones ... read more

What a change 4 months can make…. As I sat on the short little wooden couch in this dimly painted blue living room at the orphanage house in Machame, the memories came flooding in and thoughts of amazment overwhelmed me with how God steps in and uses our lives to accomplish His plans. I remembered back to the first time I had entered the room a little over four months ago to hold a Bible Study, in this home, where I didn’t know anyone upon arrival but was welcomed in by all who were around. We had the Northport group from Alabama here with us, and a primarily young group of first timers in the mission field. I had three young college girls walking with me during this particular day and Abigail by my side as ... read more

Today is Friday, and i just completed my first week as a day care volunteer. To say the least, i have had just the most amazing week in one of the most beautiful countries with the friendliest people i have encountered so far. Tanzanians are dirt poor, but they have a heart so big and a smile that is infectious. Just wonderful. I am supervising, teaching, and playing with about 90 kids at my day care center and am assisting the 2 other teachers who also work as prison guards during the day or night shift (just depends). These two teachers have to prepare the mid-morning porridge snack for the kids over the open fire stove and attend to all of the kids in the meantime. Needless to say they need help, and i am glad ... read more

Hi, i arrived in Kilimanjaro - Moshi area, and my volunteer home base in Karanga village last night after flying from Jo burg to Dar es Salaam, Zansibar and eventually Kilimanjaro Intl airport. Luck would have it that on the flight from Dar to Kili, i was actually sitting next to the cross cultural prgram director for tanzania , mama Thea, who was also on her way to greet all of us newly arrived volunteers. What a great lady, and what a nice way to get inroduced to what we are about to do. We were picked up at the airport by a minibus, where several other volunteers were already waiting (all in all there are about 24 of us, i think, still getting to know everyone) from all walks of life, the youngest being 13, ... read more

In Search of the Big Five: June, 2007 This unbelievable trip began long before we touched down in Kilimanjaro Airport, Tanzania, on June 15, 2007. Getting ready for Africa was unlike anything else we have ever done in our travels because of the options available, the decisions that had to be made, and the preparations involved. First, since we wanted to see as many wild animals as possible, we chose Tanzania and Kenya as our destinations. Then there were the innumerable options of when to go, length, price, itinerary, quality of accommodations, amenities, etc. A 10-12 day safari can range from $1,000 to $10,000, so research was needed to see which style best suited our needs—budget, first class, deluxe, or luxury. Tauck, one of the world's most respected tour operators, offered what we wanted in a ... read more

Still alive, and doing well. Summitting Kilimanjaro and viewing game in the safari have taken all of my time in the past 2 weeks. East Africa is not known for its internet capacity so this is my only chance to tell my tale. On route to China now, which means only 1 week left in this 2 months journey. San Franciscans, I'll see you next Friday! Below is a daily account of my climbing journal followed by brief descriptions of the safari. Unfortunately I did not have the time to learn and appreciate Tanzania's amazing culture and history, aside from a quick stop at a remote Maasai village, which reminded me much of Tibet villages, especially in smell. Kilimanjaro Day 1 - Machame gate / 18km, 4.5 hr, 2980m highest alt Machame route is the ... read more

So our days of building have come to an end. We left our village of Mvae last Friday and met up again with all the volunteers from the other camp and new volunteers who had just arrived in from Dar es Salaam. Had a fantastic night catching up with everyone before we all went our separate ways, even managed to make it to a night club which was basically a big barn with ALOT of strobe lighting! Great night had by everyone, though we were all a little tired on Saturday, our last day in Singida. It was very strange saying goodbye to people with whom we had lived in such close quarters for a month. Sunday morning at 5am we hauled ourselves to the bus station to take the most insane bus journey of my ... read more
