I have pretty much finished up my first week here in Tanzania. Today I will attend my firt home visit to one of my students houses, he is unable to make it to school in the morning becasue of his disability. I do not know what to expect, but I know that I will gain much from this expereince, and hopefully I can make a good impact on his life. At school yesterday, I introduced my kids to a frisbee. They loved it, and surprisingly they were really good at it. Thier patience and eagerness to learn blows me away. Each child patiently waits for his/her turn to through the frisbee, and when they do throw it all of the children cheer as it soars. One student in particular really loved the frisbee, Godfrey. He must have ... read more

Jambo, So I arrived three days ago, and have really been on the go ever since. CCS provides you with a lot of cultural understanding exercises and in formation sessions so that we can have a better understanding of the area. I have been out and about in the community a number of times, and the people here mostly belonging to the chagga tribe a soo friendly. Not uncommon to be walking down the road and strike up a 5 minute conversation with someone that you have never met. They are all so interested in where you are from, and what you do, and even what your religion is. It is frowned upon by these people to not belong to a certain denomintion, so I try to not answer the question when it is asked becasue ... read more

Hi Everyone! 2.5 months now since I returned from my 6 month trip through South East Asia. So it was time for the next adventure! ;) This time I left Cape Town to explore Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. There were 11 of us who decided to challenge themselves on the 7-day climb to the summit at 5895m. We took the slightly longer Lemosho Glades route which is a very scenic route. Our first day was spent at the pool of the hotel, being briefed by our 3 guides - Thomas, Marsha and James. Main message - your bag can only weigh max 15kg. So everyone back to the room trying to re-organise their goodies. Some def managed better than others in the end ;) At 9am the next day (Day I) we hit the road - ... read more

Today started at midnight I can not tell you how cold it was but we were wearing all of the clothes we had taken up the mountain. Neither of us felt very good due to the sickness the night before, on way to the toilets it bcame clear we were not the only ones!!! We started the climb it was very slow and very hard we had to zig zag across the mountain becasue it was soo steep. We took regular breaks as it was difficult to breathe lots of other people from other groups were struggling to make it up the hill. When we got to 5000m and there was a sign calling it milsons point so we knew we had 895m to gain :(. We stopped for a bit which was really needed as ... read more

Yesterday morning at 6:41 AM our faithful guide, James, dragged us up to Uhuru peak, the tallest point in Africa. We now are proud holders of "gold" certificates, meaning that we have officially conquered Mount Kilimanjaro. It was NOT easy. We left Norfolk on the morning of August 25th, and were only in the air a few hours before our first problem. The weather in Atlanta had taken a turn for the worse, and we were being diverted to Augusta. We sat on the tarmac in Augusta for over an hour, watching the clock tick by as the departure time for our flight to Amsterdam drew closer. Thankfully, we made it to Atlanta in time for our connection, and, over 20 hours later, landed at Kilimanjaro airport near Arusha. However, one of our bags did NOT ... read more

As Hemingway said of his piece, ‘I’m throwing all the truth on this one’. It was somewhere between two and four in the morning, when my eyes started to go blank, and zigzag was the only direction my legs knew. I was conscious, but had started to lose control of my body. Congestion was problem bigger than altitude at that point, and we had started at 11:30 pm only to go up, always up. My headlamp went off. Freaking batteries, no more spare ones. Zungu led the way, Shuvo was in front of me illuminating his path and mine, and Didas completed the group. Zungu’s real name is Tadeus, but his father had called him Zungu (“bald”, which he was) since he was a kid. He stopped singing (it was Silent Night in Swahili, I still ... read more
