You hear many reasons why you shouldn't climb Kilimanjaro. Likelihood of not making it to the summit due to insufficient time to acclimatize to the altitude, likelihood of getting sick due to insufficient time to acclimatize to the altitude, Africa has more beautiful mountains that you can climb for a fraction of the cost, there is no technical difficulty involved in the climb, there are hoards of ill-prepared tourists purely climbing for the glory of telling their friends back home that they have scaled Africa's highest peak, etc, etc. These reasons are probably all valid. But I did it anyway. And loved it. I have read somewhere that scientists are predicting that Kilimanjaro will be devoid of snow and ice by 2020. As well as becoming a less interesting trek, it will also be more dangerous. ... read more

Day 1 - We headed off from our hotel in Moshi early and arrived at the Marangu gate, which happens to be higher than Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia. After all signing in we set off into the rain forrest towards the Mandara huts (2700m) where would spend our first night. The rain forrest was beautiful and we got to see some monkeys in the evening when we arrived - very cool. We went on a short walk to the crater of a smaller volcano which is supposed to help with acclimitisation. I just liked the view : ) Day 2 - After an interesting nights sleep - the monkeys tend to be rather vocal at night - we were fed and started on the way to Horombo (3720m). The change in the vegetation was amazing. The ... read more

Warning: its a long one! But you must get to the end-its the best part!! Alright, I know its been ages since I’ve posted, and a while since the hike. Life has been super hectic here, I climbed Kili from the 18th-26th of September, and then erik was here visiting from the 30th to the 13th of October, and we were much too busy travelling and exploring for me to get to a computer, but that’s another blog! I’ve received many emails asking for the story of the climb and pics, so here it goes. First and most important, we were successful! Both Brad and I made it to the top, which was awesome, and the journey made it all well worth our time and effort. We arrived in Arusha on a Sunday night, and started ... read more

Hi everybody!!!!!! Sorry for the long long radio silence. I've been away from computers and all things technological for quite awhile now. But I'm ready to write down the whole Kilimanjaro experience now. Yes, Tezza, I did take notes so you wouldn't miss a THING! :) As for Zanzibar, I'm going to save that as a seperate entry, so tune in again soon... KILIMANJARO Departure from Ghana: So I stayed in Ghana overnight with my friend and colleague and hit the road on Friday Sept 8th at 9pm. I caught the plane in Accra airport to Nairobi which is a few hours ahead and I landed early in the morning, around 6 or so. I got my "transit visa" to pass through the country to get to Tanzania by bus, and I waited outside for the ... read more

1 in 5 climbers make it to the snow-capped peak nearly 6000 m to the roof of Africa. The mountain the local and notoriously entrepreneurial Chagga tribe call 'Mountain of God' was formed 20-30 million years ago during the faulting of the Great Rift Valley, whose furrows run right across Tanzania as part of its trail from Lebanon to Mozambique. It has 3 main peaks - Kibo, the summit, actually a large crater formed a mere 100000 years ago, the last time the volcano erupted, Mawenzi and Shira. Tourists flock from all over the world to take on the challenge of reaching Kibo as no specific climbing gear is needed, just a lot of will power, determination a touch of insanity and warm clothes. Lots of warm clothes. In 1848 when disillusioned missionary Johannes Rebmann reported ... read more

We did it! Kilimanjaro at 5,895m conquered by Merryn, Joe and Mike at 6:24am on Saturday 2 September 2006. And here are the details....... After I had been away from Australia for 4 months, Joe was finally able to join me in my world adventure, even if it was for only one week. But what a great week it was. Mike, Joe's best mate, also joined in for the challenge. As mentioned a little later, I know I would not have made it to the top without them. So, note to anyone contemplating this climb - take good friends with you. We met up in Nairobi, took a bus to Moshi, Tanzania and waited at our hotel to meet our guide and find out a little more about what we were in for over the next ... read more

A great big "Good Job" to all of us! =) A big shout out to my family who were kind enough to contribute genes that allowed me to climb to 19,164 ft without Diamox! =) How it all began.... Wake-up call at 10pm, tea and cookies at 10:30, and at 11pm we started our final leg of the voyage up. The night was clear, and thankfully there wasn't much wind. the clinking of our steps and trekking poles on the slate sounded like breaking glass or clinking chimes. All I saw was the ground in front of me, Paul's back, and occasional tents set up along the route. We started our ascent with our guide Godi in the lead and the assistant guide, Phillip in the rear. Vaughn and Laura quickly started to pull away, so ... read more

Day 26 (June 16) - Kibo Hut Today was the hardest hike yet - 4.5hrs up to 4700m (15,000ft). We hiked another hour up the mountain to acclimatize, and I had a very bad headache. We ate around 6pm and went to bed at 7pm. Wake-up call at 11:30pm... Day 27 (June 17) - Horombo Hut We were woken up for coffee at 11:30pm, and we were on our way to the peak around 12:20am. Our goal was to make the 6.5hr hike to the summit in time for sunrise. It was rough. Very cold, and my head was killing me. But I was all there in the head, so no worries. Took some Advil and head was cured, but I felt terribly sick. Anyway, we made it! Day 28 (June 18) - Arusha Hiked down ... read more
