Hello Everyone, We just wanted to let you all know that we arrived home safely, late Friday night. Thanks to all who remembered our family in prayer as we traveled back home to Tanzania. The trip went well, and was uneventful for the most part. We were up at 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning, and left SFO shortly after 8 a.m. We arrived at the Kilimanjaro National Airport Friday night, shortly before 9 p.m. Two vehicles were required to haul our family of six, plus a mountain of luggage, so John Baker and Cy Stafford graciously helped us get home. On the way to our house from the airport, a belt broke on the vehicle in which George and the boys were riding, and they had pull over. They phoned the other vehicle, in which the girls ... read more

This weekend was kind of sad, I had to say bye to all of the people that I started with here, they all signed up for shorter stays. PLus about 6 other left, so the house is very empty and quiet now. It is peaceful, but boring. On friday we went back to Glacier, and had a few drinks, and got to meet a bunch of the volunteers that live in another CCS house right down the street from us. It was really cool to hear about some of thier expereinces, and also cool to find out that there is another guy that is in the same boat as me, (I am currently the only guy at my house...can't complain though ; )....) Thr rest of the weekend was spent preparing for school this week. We ... read more

Jambo All! I am now moving onto my second blog entry of my trip so far. I will endevour to carry on doing weekly ones however this may change considering its taken my about a year just to log onto this website. Anyway I will start with the wedding as I don't think I went into much detail the last time. What Alice and I failed to realise about the wedding is that we were essentially bridesmaids. When Sophia insisted that everyone was wearing the same outfit what she really meant was the close friend and family - and us the token muzungos. Everyone was so excited to have us there shaking our hands and staring at us with wide-eyed faces with big grins. The church bit was quite traditional much like an english wedding but ... read more

This week is going great, My placement was very productive in the begining of the week , but becasue of examaniations I did not have to go to my placement yesterday, today or tommorow. So today I went to a different primary school. The one I ended up going to is called Kilimajawa, which means "winds from kilimanjaro". This school had the most amazing view of kili from its playground area. Ali, the volunteer that is usually at this school had a feild day planned for the students today, so I got to help out and meet knew kids and teachers. It was great expereince. These kids have a lot more energy, and are louder then my kids, but it was a nice change of pace. They loved playing the games he planned, and they surprisingly ... read more

12/11/08 Mambo! Today is pretty much just a chance for me to put up some pictures, but I couldn’t leave ya hanging without an update. Yesterday we had another fundraiser that one of our volunteers set up at the women’s group she volunteers at. This is the second one I have been to since coming here and they are a great deal for these groups. Basically, they make a bunch of jewelry, skirts, bags, you name it, sell it to a bunch of white people, give a tour of their village, sell you soda because you would die or thirst otherwise, then play music and dance. Pretty good time if you ask me. So being the only guy in my group most of the time at a women’s group fundraiser can get pretty interesting. Lets just ... read more

My third week went pretty well. I really feel like I am starting to get through to a majority of the students in my class. There is still a number of students who are very difficult to teach, even tame, but it is all a challenge that I signed up for and will continue to work on. At school this past week a number of things happened that I will never forget. The first occurance came when Lou, one of my downs syndrome students, fell during a foot race with her fellow classmates during reccess. while running she tripped over a rock and fell pretty hard, she scraped her elbow pretty bad, and immediately started crying. Instead of her peers laughing, or not reacting at all, they all came running over to help her up off ... read more

10/11/08 Ok so I have been slacking a bit on the journal entries lately, pole sana. It has been very busy lately. Last week was filled with more adventures at my placement. I learned a ton about the education system here last week, and I turn have a new found respect for the education system in America. Every day for the first two weeks we have had guest speakers come and talk to us about different cultural aspects here in Tanzania. Last week we had two fascinating speakers. The first one was the traditional healer, or medicine man. It’s incredible how many people still aren’t on board with modern medicine here. Herbal remedies are still the preferred method of treatment and in rural areas, the only type of treatment. They claim to be able to cure ... read more

This past weekend was a lot of fun. My first weekend to hang around and do things in town. On Friday night we were told that there was going to be a reggae band playing at this local, outdoor ,night club called Glacier. When we got there we were disapointed to hear that they were not palying, becasue there was too much going on in preparation for the next days festivities, Oktoberfest. So we sat down and grabbed a drink, looked over and notcied a rasta dude hanging out by himself, so we invited him over to join us. Turns out he was the lead singer and guitarist for the band we came to see, and he was bummed becasue his show got cancelled. So I asked him if he had his guitars, and he asked ... read more

25/10 First day in Tanzania, amazing. I was talking with people at the end of the night and it really felt like I had already been there for weeks. Haven’t decided if that is a good thing or not yet… I think it is. Alright, getting a little ahead of myself here, I have a feeling that is going to happen a lot here, there is just so much to do and so many things I want to see. So this trip started with some pretty ridiculous travel. I started out at 6 AM in Milwaukee and made the rainy drive down to O’Hare. Anticipating traffic that never really appeared put me at the airport at about 9 AM when my flight to Detroit didn’t leave until noon. Oh well, got to spend some quality time ... read more
