Of course it's taken me just shy of three months to get a blog set up...nothing like rushing through life! I better start way back in early March when we left a table full of empty booze-bottles at our Wellington flat after packing last-minute with a hang-over only free booze on the pre-emerging flights could cure! After a brief stop in Bangkok airport reminiscing about excellent massages and Asian delights I soldiered onto the next half-day flight to Jo'burg. After running into Mignon (an old friend who I travelled with in Europe) who actually owned the hostel we were staying in, we ventured around Jo'burg as much as you could by foot. I'm sure some of you have been there before and loved it, but the limitations of where you could walk (even some locals ... read more

Yes it is true. First, today we drove to a small village out of Cape Town it took us about 2 1/2 hours. We were really beginning to like Cape town, but there are so many other areas and territory we are covering in South Africa. Our drive was once again, no memorable, we took tons of pics, and little movies. When we got to our small guest house, on cliff st. you can only imagine how set into cliffs, and so beautiful our surroundings are! This place is called whale song lodge, and the reason is because every year the whales ( all different species) make the journey away from Antarctica’s cold water to these warmer waters to mate, from May till Sept. The people here are so used to this that I swear, they ... read more

PHOTOS - Link Day 1 - Cape Town After arriving into Cape Town at around 11pm and having already spent a night in Sydney airport followed by 16 hours on planes, I passed out in my hostel bed in the hope that I might actually wake up in time to meet my group the next day! Luckily, or not, a fire alarm (false one) at 5am was my wake up call and the smell of sick in the room (god knows who'd done it) was enough to get me up! At breakfast I met most of the group, 23 of us, although remembering their names was going to be one of the biggest challenges of the trip. There's a good mix of boys/girls, couples etc which was a relief after having spent most of South America ... read more

Overly anxious to reach Krueger National Park for our first safari, it was only natural that our takeoff from Johannesburg would be delayed by one hour due to some schmuck who wasn’t supposed to be on our plane. The man remained defiantly in his seat as the ground and flight crew haphazardly attempted to sort things out. Bitchy stewardesses scrambled around to calm frustrated passengers who demanded to know what was going on. Gene and I grew restless in our seats, worried that we would miss out on the late afternoon safari. After having finally landed in Nelspruit, we met with the flight crew who would be transporting us to the game park and apologized for our delay. I gave Gene a troubled look as I squeezed into the backseat of the 4-seater propeller plane, so ... read more

Kruger national park is a world famous game reserve, dear reader, and this impressively run park is north east of Jo'Burg. It features a huge variety of wildlife, often at very close quarters. Game spotting is one of the most enjoyable experiences in life, and if our encounters in the park are an accurate guide you won't be disappointed! We spent three days in the Kruger park, which is South Africa's most famous tourist attraction, and we left one of the world's oldest wildlife parks exhilarated by our viewing experiences. There are an incredible number of animals to spot, and it's a wonderful privilege to be in their world as nature intended. To recap from the previous journal, my American friend and I went through the formalities at the border crossing in Swaziland, then headed north ... read more

As we sat watching Dominic gyrate his hips back and forth while pantomiming the baboon mating process, I couldn’t help but laugh about how his professional demeanor had digressed. Gina and I had thoroughly relaxed by our third morning in Cape Town; So, too, had Allan and Dominic, who by this point consistently had us in stitches and seemed more like friends than guesthouse hosts. The hospitality they’d shown us over the first two days at Twenty Two was unparalleled by any other accommodation in our lives. The third day was no different. Once Dominic was satisfied that his standup comic routine had us choking on our breakfasts, he paused to ask what our plan was for the day. Having realized not long after our arrival that we had not nearly allocated enough time to explore ... read more

Today Tommy and I took an all day coastal drive along the peninsula all the way to the cape of good hope. Tommy had a blast driving like he was racing and these twists and turns were all along the cliffs, and severe sharp turns. The views were breathtaking, so we stopped just about every few miles. One view was literally more beautiful then the next, until we got closer to the National Park where the cape point is. Before we reached the park, we stopped in at an ostrich farm.. I insisted since now I think Ostrich is amazing, I had it for dinner last night! It is so lean! So then we reached the park which signs warned us as we entered about not feeding the baboons, and to be aware of the ... read more

I have been so busy that I haven't had time to post anything. We work a lot on this trip and today I realized that wanting to change the world is hard. Service Learning is fun but it combines two difficult things--Service and Learning. The past few days were so dull I did not want to share them. From Monday till today I have done nothing but eat, sleep, and go to work. Not very interesting blog material. Then something amazing happened on Wednesday. We got free tickets to the ballet Carmen and a behind the scenes tour of Artscape (like the Chrysler Hall of Cape Town). They do plays, operas, ballets, etc. Our friend Vuyou works there and got us the tickets. The house manager took us around giving us inside infor on the ... read more
