I had planned to head directly to Durban from Coffee Bay but most people (tourists and S. Africans alike) advised me to skip it and stay at smaller villages along the coast, so instead I went to the Mantis and Moon hostel in Umzumbe, about an hour and a half south along the coast from Durban. It’s a one-of-a-kind place—you basically feel like you’re in the middle of the jungle. (I originally thought the plants must have been imported since I hadn’t seen tropical plants like that anywhere else in S. Africa, but I was informed that right around that area is where the climate becomes sub-tropical.) There are lantern-lit wooden paths that lead around the property—very romantic! I opted for a double which was basically a little bungalow with a semi-outdoor bathroom attached. It ... read more

Sawubona! Woke up above Zambia. It's my first time in the Southern Hemisphere and I did not have a passing-the-Equator ceremony... or maybe they had it while I was sleeping. I was supposed to spend some 12 hours in Johannesburg's airport (it finally was 16 hours as there was some delay...), waiting for my connecting flight, but it wasn't to be. After a few hours, having gone through the airport several times, I got to meet Douglas from Uganda who's been living in South Africa for more than 10 years. He was collecting someone from the airport and very kindly proposed to take me around a bit. So off we headed to Jo'burg and its very top end suburbs of Houghton and Sandton (said to be the continent's richest square mile), also to the not so ... read more

Today we get a half day at work and I am excited. We have been getting up at 6:30 every morning to begin our day and we work until about 4. At Yabonga the Office of the Premire was coming to present donations and they decided that they did not want to go to the township to present (fear and racism rearing its ugly head). They brough in some parcels with food, clothing, etc. The women of yabonga were happy to see the stuff but the ceremony was very akward. White S. Africans in a room of black S. Africans not such a good combination. I was greatful for the experience and happy that they made donations but it was all very political and it seemed a bit phony. Anyway, the day went by fast and ... read more

Last night and early this morning I had one of the most indepth experience of my life. I sat down and talked about my feelings since I have been in Cape Town. Especially, my feelings on being a black American in Africa. Small things like the fact that many people in the township did not ask us (black students) for money probably because they feel that we do not have any. They asked the white students constantly and were much more attentive to them; they see white people and think wealth and power. Not that I wanted to be asked for money but it is just stange to see the pull towards "whiteness" that still exists in the world; both in Africa and in America. The same ones who oppressed are the only one's who can ... read more

After J-Bay I moved on from to the Wild Coast in the Transkei region, which is quite a bit further up in the direction of Durban. It was a 9-hour bus ride—ouch! But it left so early (5:30am) that only half of it was during waking hours anyway. As usual I had two seats to myself so I was able to curl up and complete my night’s sleep. I reached Mthatha, which is a town inland from Coffee Bay where the hostel shuttles come and fetch you. We arrived around 2:30pm, which is when all the kids get out of school, so there were hordes of them in their cute little uniforms running all over the place around the town. We passed so many of them along the road before reaching Mthatha, it really gave ... read more

Today is Tuesday. I have to keep telling myself that because I am still missing a day from the trip over. Almost everyone feels and acts a day behind. I can't tell if its culture shock or exhaustion. I feel overwhelemed at times as if my mind and body are processing too many things at once. I'm not having a good day to day so there is not much to share. I do recommend that if you have a chance to visit Cape Town go to Signal Hill. The view is amazing and breath taking but it also gives you a chance to think about the disparity between the socioeconomic classesin S. Africa (not that disparity doesn't exist everywhere). To one side of the mountains are the townships and to the other tourist areas with fancy ... read more

Before we go on to the really exciting stuff of our Tuesday adventures, a brief note to say thanks to Catherine and Danny for a lovely afternoon and a great meal at Spurs in the mall yesterday! Catherine and Danny were our roomies in Chill & Surf, so it was really nice to be able to catch up with them! Good luck with your next trip guys!! Now on to today..... WE FINALLY MADE IT!!! We finally, third time lucky, got to go and visit Robben Island! And how worth the wait it was! We browsed through the Robben Island Museum, featuring a very young Mr Mandela. And then joined the throng queing (so very British) and embarked the Sea Princess ferry for our 35 minute trip over to the Island. Once there, we were greeted ... read more

Zane and the Penguins He sidled up to us as we peered through the wire netting at a couple of sleepy-eyed “Jackass” penguins, more properly known as African Penguins. Their nickname is evidenced by the wild honking and braying that erupts from time to time as the next team arrives home from a day’s fishing and each male attempts to shack up with the wrong missus. Just as he opened his mouth to tell us about the penguins, a canon fired from a naval vessel docked a short ways north at Simonstown, its boom echoing around the mountains. Zane and a couple of fluffy penguins, swished under their mum, winced and took a moment to recover. When Zane did recover, though, the torrent of information that poured from him, punctuated only by the repeated boom ... read more

Since this is a class the actual work started today. We got up early and visited everyone's service learning site. some people are work at the Women's Center, some at University of the Western Cape, and the rest are spread through different NGO (non governmental organizations). I am working at Yabonga Children's Project doing a grant management and writing project. Today was a pretty boring day. I sat through 5 lectures/presentations and had a strange lunch of baked/broiled fish and chips (french fries). I love being in S. Africa but I am not sure how I feel about it. I don't feel happy and I don't feel sad. Is it culture shock. One great thing that came out of the lectures was the realization that we are all the same. The problems/issues that came up during ... read more
