Today I spent in Plettenberg Bay. The hostel was very nice - very clean and super comfy beds. But I didn't sleep in; I was up and off early. It was about a 15 minute walk down to the water, to Central Beach. As soon as I turned a corner and could see the shore, I literally spoke aloud to myself "No way!" - because it was so beautiful. (Traveling alone, I frequently find myself speaking aloud to no one!) The beach itself was almost empty, so quiet. But I found Dolphin Adventures, the sea kayak company I'd decided to do a trip with. Joining me were 3 friends from Cape Town and a couple from England with their 4 year old son. He was so cute! Also, an incredibly brave one! I was paired with ... read more

Little Monkeys We woke up to a fantastic if slightly overcast view of a forest with mountains behind it. We eventually wandered off to breakfast which was definitely a contender for knocking our Jo’burg breakfasts off their throne. Hog Hollow is a fantastic place to stay, the main house is filled with African artefacts and wooden furniture all housed in orange, brown and black tones. Our room is in a separate building of three apartments all with a downstairs deck with hammock and comfy chairs and the fab view. It was very tempting to sit on the deck for the rest of the day sipping the home made lemon cordial provided in our room by our hosts but we had decided to go to Monkeyland and the Elephant sanctuary. We also decided that during and since ... read more

Leaving Kwa Madwala The bleep of Annabel’s wristwatch alarm heralded the start of a gruelling day of travelling: we rose and packed promptly and loaded our stuff into the game vehicle where it waited until we had finished breakfast and checked out. Manyatta rock camp was a beautiful place with friendly staff, and we were sad to leave when the transfer car arrived. Today was still not a money-back day though - armies of impala still bade farewell as we left the park and travelled to Nelspruit airport. Check-in and boarding were straightforward, and the flight on the SAA’s clockwork Jetstream aircraft back to Jo’burg was fairly painless since we are now used to the buffeting and turbulence that a smaller plane can be vulnerable to. We also managed to cadge four packets of cream biscuits ... read more

July 18, 2008 Plettenberg Bay, S.A. Our adventures in South Africa continued today with a drive from Oudtshoorn to Plettenberg bay on the Indian Ocean coast of southern South Africa. This was an easy day on the road passing from the Ostrich farms and sheep and goat ( Mohair Goats ) farms through the mountains and back to the coast on a beautiful road through the mountain passes. We enjoyed some interesting discussions, with our very knowledgeable tour guide, about the history of South Africa and some of the trials and tribulations the people have gone through for the past few hundred years to the present times. We passed by the beautiful little city of George that is locally known as the home of golf in South Africa. This is a nice city in the last ... read more

Since leaving the Wild Coast we've been working our way down the sunshine coast. Our stops have included East London, Port Elizabeth, Jeffrey's Bay, and Plettenberg Bay. East London and Port Elizabeth, although very nice cities, were just a couple stops to break up the driving and do some shopping and laundry. We stopped at Jeffrey's Bay on the morning of the 10th to check out the first day of competition for the Billabong Pro surfing competition that was going on at Supertubes beach. Much bigger waves and better tricks than we saw in Durban, it was good entertainment but the weather was super cold and windy. That afternoon we continued on to Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route. For the past two days we've stayed here enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and whale/dolphin watching. We took ... read more

MORE PHOTOS HERE EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS! NB: Internet connection in Africa is quite slow, which is why I haven't been able to upload photos, and also quite expensive, which is why I haven't written in a while. I have just arrived in Hong Kong, and am hoping to get up to date, and upload photos. Check back in soon! Along the Garden Route Saturday, June 1st, is rainy and cold, lucky for me I'm on the "Baz Bus," a rather expensive but convenient way of moving around South Africa if you stay at backpackers hostels. Heading for Plettenberg Bay, where CS host Sean, a bar anc club owner, is expecting me. Past the False Bay, the scenery is rather unimpressive. Might as well be, as I could not have seen much of it through ... read more

In Plett,we stayed on the lagoon, virtually on the beach sand. Opposite the seagull sanctuary island. We had a good time watching the seagulls in their natural environment. we rented a canoe and rowed across to the island where there are literally hundreds of seagulls and the sea is on the other side. You can go pretty far down the river on canoe, and local fishermen row out early in the morning and back late at night piled into precarious looking tiny wooden boats with one or two oars.It is peaceful and relaxing, and i don't want to move!!!! Definitely, positively go to Moby Dicks restaurant on the main beach right opposite the sun international. I got 30 prawns for R50!!!delicious, big prawns, and a wicked view.ALSO,visit Robberg Fisheries just inside Pletts industrial area, get a huge fish for next to ... read more

Hey Folks ! Just booked ourselves onto a "Mini Safari" at a game reserve near Plettenberg Bay to see the Big 5 (Lions, Giraffes, Rhinos, Elephants and some other beast I can't remember). Will update this entry with some photos, as I see some of you are eager to see something of over here. Enjoy the day and keep eye out for an updated entry at some point today or early tomorrow...... Bit of a lazy day - we drove to Nature’s Valley - a small local beach set at the bottom of the mountains - could have stayed here for hours. We then took a drive towards Plettenburg Bay and had a walk along Arch Rock Beach in the scorching heat. This is the life - there are so many stunning houses around this area - it would be quite nice to own a wee holiday home here (in our dreams)... read more

Camped in a soil quarry compound, lots of giant millipedes around camp and scorpions so have to make sure my imitation crocs stay inside my tent, chilly night but slpt very well. Drove to Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park but no space for us to camp so we looked for a campsite and found one 45 minutes away, hot and dry desert terrain. the water is salty so its very slimy and hard to come off , does not need a lot of soap. The next morning woke up very early as the park opens up at 6:30 am, cold ride to park entrance. I think we were really lucky to see lots of animals, lepopards, lions, jackals, mongoose, oryx, springbok, steenbok, wildebeest, ostriches, falcons, lots of cobras and a tortoise!! went back to camp around 8pm. Left the camp early and ... read more
