Saturday 14th February - travel day to Montagu We reluctantly left our hosts behind in Gordons Bay and made our way along the coastal road, towards Betty's Bay and Hermanus: Another mountainous coast line and famed for its whale watching from the road. (None to be seen today) The owners of jack's Cafe inspired us to continue our journey along Route 62 ( the old route from Cape Town to Johannesburg, used by many an explorer in days gone by). after about a 3 hour drive through the mountains and making our final approach to Montagu via the Kogmanskloof Pass. Montagu is one of the oldest towns on the route 62 and probably one of the prettiest. Wide street and quaint houses, set back from the road. Not having booked anything in advance we visited the ... read more

Wow!! First entry on a brand new blog - how does one start!!? Well, I moved from Cape Town to live in the coutryside in a beautiful little town called Robertson. It is situated about halfway between Worcester and Montagu on the famous Route62. It's about a 2 hour drive from Cape Town to get to this beautiful valley - also called the 'Breede River Valley' or the 'Robertson Wine Valley'. Yes, there are plenty of wine farms out here which means lots of wine-related activities and places to visit - even if you live here! So, I'm gonna share my adventures, tell you interesting stories, show you some cool pics and hope to hear from you or even get you to come & visit!... read more

Here's a church, here's the steeple, but spooky see, where's the people? Nestled in the mountains near Route 62, this was described as one of the gems of Little Karoo. It was quaint and clean with flowers bursting forth from manicured gardens but the streets were deserted. Frankly, I thought it spooky. Luckily, we stumbled across a backpacker/micro brewery and over a pint it was explained that it was so quiet because it was Good Friday. We took refuge and played petanque. Well, we threw little balls at a big ball to see who got closest. Gripping - mind you, I was still pants at it. We left to get food, going to a place recommended by the backpacker owner. He was right, the tasty morsels provided, cooked according to slow food principles, were most satisfying. ... read more

Lunch out of the way, a bit of wandering the streets, back to our Koo Karoo pad (each mention of the B&B never fails to lead to an annoying chorus in my head of ‘I am the Walrus’) and it’s time for food again, yippee! Earlier, we’d spotted a trendy looking restaurant part of the Victoria Hotel 1906 whose decor, all velvet and lush, I’d liked. We asked about eating there, were told reservations weren’t needed but that the kitchen took last orders about 9pm. We turned up sometime after 8pm, it didn’t look too busy and there were more than a few tables free, though no waitresses to be seen, so I popped my head into the small bar area to see if we could have a drink and book a table for about 30 ... read more

Picked up the car from Avis yesterday- luckily only a 2 minute drag of the bags from the hotel - we got a very cool brand new VW Polo1.4 in dark grey. The driving through Cape Town was good, hardly any traffic and Sat Nav worked well. The drive along the M1 was stunning. About 20 minutes out of town the vineyards and mountains start and didn't stop for the next 2 hours. We drove through a tunnel that must have been several miles long. Arrived in Montagu in the early afternoon, we had a lovely lunch of salad and toasted sarnies, the portions are huge and we are currently eating way too much it is just too darn nice! We've had to switch to diet softdrinks to free up calories for gorging ourselves at meal ... read more
