Easter Weekend. We only arranged with a friend to meet at her holiday house the week before. So we had lots to do, well I did as I'm not in full time employment!!! We left early Friday morning to miss the crazy drivers heading out Thursday night for the long weekend and after a brief stop to change cars, to one that was cheaper on petrol and pick up a home made milk tart, a little like an egg custard, we were off. Buffalo bay is approx 4 hours along the coast, just past George and just before Kynser. The only way to describe it is like a peninsular, from our deck we could see the forest to the front of the house and then sea on the other 3 sides. The house was amazing, nice ... read more

I could see why everyone kept saying "you have to do the Garden Route". It's simply stunning. After my bungy jump experience in Bloukrans Bridge I kept driving west. It was a short drive to my next stop and the first one of the Garden Route: Nature's Valley. The place I stayed in was one of the best I've stayed in so far in SA; "Wild Spirit". It's a big property with a very rustic feel to it. There are a free walks that can be done within the property, they have good food and the owners are excellent hosts; Jenny & Earl, who've had the place since the 70's. At the time there was also a Spanish couple, Alex and María who were very friendly people. As a side note: the owner of the "Wild ... read more

We went to Seal Island with a boat from False Bay, Cape Town. It was very choppy and the waves were huge. In fact it was the first trip after a couple of days of cancellations. It was worth it. When we arrived we were greeted by thousands of Cape Fur Seals. The island is just 4 metres high with no beach or vegetation, just resting frolicking seals. We did not see any great whites (pleasure yet to come at Gansbaai) just a couple of dolphins that accompanied our boat for a short while. We were 'adopted' by a baby seal whilst waiting for our boat.He spent half an hour repeatedly frolicking and coming out of the water to see what we were doing. The visit is a must for all animal lovers.... read more

My eyes popped open on our 3rdday of the tour at 6am – a full 45 minutes before my alarm was set to go off. I think that I was so nervous that I wouldn’t be able to sleep after enjoying too many glasses of cheap wine, that I set my body clock to wake me up at the crack of dawn. I could definitely feel the effects of the wine, but I got out of bed and took a shower. Got ready, ate breakfast, and was ready to go a few minutes before we were supposed to leave. I was feeling pretty proud of myself until later when I realized that I left like half my shower stuff behind. Oops. Even though I was feeling a bit slow and queasy, I was doing better than ... read more

When thinking of the National Parks in South Africa thoughts such as herds of elephants grazing the open plains, lions sneaking up on prey are and hippos grunting in the rivers are all common. But it is not only the wildlife packed parks that attract all the attention as there are three that are stretched along the Garden Route in the south offer something that you would dare to do in the others, a hike. Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma are all within close proximity of each other along the coast with the former attracting the most tourists and for good reason. Tsitsikamma NP has several first class hiking trails and it is here that the five day otter train begins that will take you 41km along some amazing coastline. But for the less energetic and for ... read more
