This leg of our journey involved two more of my favourite things - beaches and all things golf. Despite this area's name - Garden Route, our goal was to follow the coastline as closely and as much as possible and if there was a beach, we would find it. The golf, well, you got a taste of that in one of my previous entries and for more, read on. b. Cape Town to Hermanus We drove out of the city on the four-lane divided N1 thinking that the end goal, the town of Stellenbosch, should be reached quickly. Stellenbosch is both the centre of the Cape's wine growing as well as a university town with deep Afrikaans historical roots. Once we got off the N1, we immediately started seeing vinyards. Unfortunately it was Sunday and many ... read more

Re-routed I returned to Cape Town from Zambia, dragging my injured ankle through OR Tambo (Johannesburg) and Cape Town airports. The size of the swelling increased significantly during the flight...by the next morning, there were purple lines where I'd wrapped the bandage around it. For the symptoms, it didn't hurt all that badly. Stephen at Amber Tree loaned me an ankle brace, which helped a lot. I had a few days to rest it before Áine showed up. When she got in to Cape Town, I went out to meet her at the airport. We decided to stay a few days in Cape Town, before heading out the Garden Route. I had covered some of the route before, but we had more time this time around, so we aimed to get further east. With 2, we ... read more

Exactly like the Garden of Eden. Except real. I picked up my rental car from the entirely real and legit and not-a-scam-at-all company called Tempest. It was a little Tata Safire, apparently of Indian construction. It had many of the features of a real car, such as doors and a steering wheel, and I have to say a fairly good radio/cd player; but it was small and weak, like Switzerland. Nonetheless, it would suffice for this trip. I began my Garden Route adventure by driving down the western road to Cape Point. The most south-western point in Africa (the most southern point is Cape Aghulas, but there's nothing there) was a savage place. A soft green and blue canvas, slashed with grey-black rocks and splashed with white foam from the crashing waves. On the way there, ... read more

Week 2 Africa – Wine Country & Coast Day 9, Thursday, March 3rd, we said goodbye to Cape Town with one last visit to Llundudno Beach (I watched Johnny get a sick barrel) before heading towards Hermanus. Hermanas is another small holiday beach town (they have a lot of those here) known for beautiful beaches and surf in surrounding areas. We arrived around 1pm and decided to grab some lunch at the charming Fisherman’s Cottage restaurant. We shared one of the best niciose salads I have even had with a great glass of local Sauvignon Blanc. Did I mention the food and wine here is amazing (way better than Germany). After lunch we explored the town a little before heading to the beach to look for waves. The waves were tiny so we just relaxed at ... read more

Hello.. so the the second part of the Garden Route. Day 4 and 5- Plettenberg Bay These days we stayed at Plet bay in a hostel called Amakaya, lovely place with the lady called Mary who loved (and more than Charlie if that is possible) Cricket! The first day was our first encounter of rain which made Cassie very grumpy so we went to see the Monkeys and Birds of Eden to try and cheer her up. First we went to monkey land- where we saw a variety of money including a rare white gibbon and a micheal jackson monkey. We went on the longest swing bridge where they filmed Indiana Jones. Our guide repeated himself a lot, although so much so we still cant remember what he said! And as we left we managed to ... read more

Hello to all! So we arrived back to base last night having driven the Graden Route over the past 7 days. Day One- Mossel Bay We left at about 11am and after 4.5 hours driving arrived in Mossel Bay. Along the way we realised that we could not charge the SatNav up after we had used all its battery so it was up to us and our map reading abilities from here on in (I say us - I mean Cassie). The N2 (the major road we dove along) was just a highway up over mountain ranges and we were surrounded by scenes you could only dream of on the m25 or m1! Upon arriving in Mossel Bay we were told at the first camp site that our van with bed in was not allowed into ... read more

Friday (9/7/10) We packed up our gear and waited for the Baz Bus to Mossel Bay. The Baz Bus was packed! We eventually arrived to Mossel Bay Backpackers, a lovely beach themed B/P just a block back from the ocean. We dropped our gear off and headed out in search of lunch. Location perhaps obscuring our judgment but the views from Diappo restaurant directly over the beach looked too good to refuse. The food was less impressive but we filled up on some pasta and a burger just the same. We wandered back along the shoreline past a young seal feeding in the shallows and some fisherman with some impressive full thrusting jigging techniques and stopped at the supermarket picking up some wine and oysters for dinner. Back at the hostel we were tucking some nibbles ... read more

After a very depressing England, Algeria game, time to leave Cape Town. First stop Stellenbosch, only 30mins from Cape Town and famous for its wine. We stop at Neethlingshof for a tasting, only R30 for 6 tastings, Hawkins is driving so I get his too! Some very full bodied reds but refreshing whites. This winery is also very environmentally concious so they are reintroducing the carcals, a type of wild cat, and owl posts as the owls and carcals work together to regulate the mouse population. After a freezing cold shower in the Hermanus Caravan Park, we aren't moving too fast so we miss the first whale trip of the day. We are told the whales are often closer in the afternoon so the trip is quicker so we decide to do the midday trip anyway. ... read more
