We started off this morning, up at 5:00 a.m., in order to have an early breakfast and be on our way to Cape Town International at 7:15 a.m. We flew direct to Johannesburg via British Air and were surprised to be served another hot breakfast. After landing at Johannesburg and collecting our bags, we were met in the arrivals area by our new guide, Mary-Anne. She would be our driver and source of information for about the next four hours as we made our way to Mt. Sheba, a resort isolated in the hills of Mpumalanga. We stopped for lunch at a travel plaza that was also a nature preserve. It turns out Nando's (Peri-peri chicken) is actually a South African franchise. The Nando's in downtown Chicago, however, doesn't have views of emu, rhino, zebra, eland, ... read more

After we got back to camp at 4:00 we were a bit too wired to sleep much so we sort of dozed until the alarm went off at 5:30. We headed out for the morning game drive when it was still dark. We headed back towards where the lion was but he was gone. We did see a large elephant though just waking up. We headed out in search of wild dogs that had been spotted in one area but no luck. We did see some kudu and a few more impala. There was a call on the radio about two lionesses so we headed that way at high speed. It was sort of like you’d see in the livings - charging down twisty paths in a speeding Jeep dust flying. We passed some zebra, really ... read more

Our guide was determined to show us a big cat so at 2:00 am he heard two of them roaring. He dashed out in the Jeep with the camp manager and they tracked one down not too far from camp. They woke us up and we, along with the other couple here, jumped in the other Jeep and raced out of camp. It was quite exciting to race down the dark, dirt road in pursuit of a lion in the middle of the night. We got there and it was a young male who wasn’t too fussed by our being there. He was busy trying to find the other male that he’d been calling. He got curious about us and came right up to our Jeep - maybe 5 meters away. Then he got startled and ... read more

So today was our first full day in Africa and it went somewhat as expected. We got up early and went on a pre-dawn game drive out into Kruger. We didn’t have much luck though as we only saw one lone giraffe on top of a termite mound, some small antelope and, you guessed it, impala. It was a particularly cool day, cloudy and overcast. Even though we didn’t see many animals, it was lovely to be out on the savanna driving in the open air Jeep. It made us both be present- no wifi or other distractions. We stopped for coffee at a site where the former landowner, once he learned he had cancer, set up a campsite that overlooked his land. He spent the last bit of his life there enjoying the natural area. ... read more

Our last day at Tydon Safari Camp and it was still an early start but this time we are off to Kruger National Park itself and we are not sure just how this will compare to driving around private game parks where we could go off road where as Kruger won’t let people do that. The Aussies and the Welsh couple will be on board so for the first time in the last 3 drives the land rover and the guide won’t be just for us. We headed off just after 6.30am and it was a half hour drive to get to the gate into Kruger. Neil was our guide this morning and he has the job to do to find us lions although we have told him that our leopard experiences to date in both ... read more

After a pretty uneventful red eye (Note: the food on South African Airlines was outstanding), we landed in Johannesburg, changed planes and found ourselves at the Heodspruit airport which was very homey for an airport. More like a log cabin than what you’d traditionally think of. But the staff was very efficient and helpful and we were on our way with our driver within 10 minutes of landing. On our drive to the camp, our drivers kept an eye out for wild life and we were fortunate to see on the 45 minute drive to our camp giraffes, elephants, zebra, mongoose, eagles and impala (referred to by our driver as “McDonalds” because they’re everywhere and everyone eats them. Arrived at the camp in a bit of a daze. Camp is a simplified term for it as ... read more

The wake up call at Tydon Safari Camp in Sabi Sands was a little later than at Gomo Gomo and we enjoyed the extra lie in albeit only another half hour. Again the routine was to rise, get dressed warmly and head down for a coffee before boarding the land rover for the morning game drive. For some reason here at Sabi Sands it seemed much lighter in the sky even though there was only a half hours difference to Gomo Gomo get up and about time. We again got to feel like royalty this morning as we are the only two staying at the safari camp although there will apparently be more people coming in later in the day. Our final morning at Gomo Gomo and we were going to join the morning game drive before breakfast and then be delivered to Hoedspruit Airport to be picked up and taken south to part 2 of our safari adventure. Again someone came knocking at the door at 5.15am and we readied ourselves for the departure after breakfast by making sure we were virtually packed and ready to go. Another chilly morning and we were well rugged up against the cold although this time there was some overcast cloud so that the bite from the wind as we started out on the drive wasn’t quite as severe as it had been on previous mornings. After the sighting of the leopard in the late afternoon yesterday there was still anticipation amongst ourselves and the American family that we ... read more

There was the tap on the unit window at 5.15 am just as happened yesterday and we arose and quickly dressed warmly not to be caught out like yesterday morning when we really felt the cold. What would today bring? Would the elusive big cat be found for us to view before we finished out stay at Gomo Gomo Lodge? Only time will tell. We were to continue our game drive with Gert and Dominic along with the American family and we nabbed the front row of the three tiers on the back of the land rover again. Heading out it wasn’t long before we came across a group of zebras preparing to roam and graze for the day. It is amazing how every zebra in the world has its own distinctive coat and no two ... read more

There was a quiet tap at the door just before 5.15am. It was time for coffee and the morning game drive. The young women from Singapore were heading away early this morning and didn’t have time to do the drive but the family from Texas were there all coated up ready to endure the cold. We were only a short distance from the lodge when we came across giraffes in several sizes all nonchantly grazing on the trees at their respective heights. As expected it was cold, very cold as we headed out towards the tar sealed road from the gatehouse and continued east towards the rising sun. The cold intensified as the land rover picked up speed and the wind chill tried to find any parts of our body that had even the smallest exposure ... read more
