Hazyview is a sub-tropical farming town in Mpumalanga province, renowned for its large banana and macadamia nut industries, contributing about 20% of South Africa's bananas and 30% of macadamia output. It is also a tourist destination for people traveling to the Krueger National Park or doing the Panorama Tour, which was precisely our intention too. The Panorama Route is a famous road on the edge of the Midlveld in Mpelanga. The topography at the Blyde River Canyon drops by app 1000 m to the “Lowveld” creating spectacular gorges and waterfalls. There are actually more waterfalls around this area than anywhere else in southern Africa. Regarded as the most stunning of the lot, Mac Mac has twin falls that plunge some 70m into a gorge below. We had a list of about 6 places we wanted to ... read more

Got up to finish the Panorama Route with God's Window and a couple of waterfalls. Started out bright and sunny, but by the time we got to God's Window we were socked in. I hiked a little further up the mountain and did get a nice view of surrounding area with cloud moving in. As I hiked further up, I got back into fog. We proceeded to the waterfalls and back to town for breakfast. We heard good things about Harry's Pancakes, so we gave it a try, and glad we did, Great coffee and very special pancakes. Got to Sabie River Bush Lodge in good time, as the drive was more or less eventless. Seriously, every square foot of the earth has been altered to plant pine tree, eucalyptus trees, or banana trees. Then Hazyview ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318A friend asked us to give some information about camping in Kruger National Park and which ones were our favorites and so hopefully this will answer many of those questions. In South Africa, areas set aside for sleeping, eating and shopping overnight are called 'Rest Camps.'We have experienced many of the camps at Kruger National Park and do have our favorites to be sure. Before we actually get to the park, Robert especially does a lot of research and reading information on the SanParks Forum. There you can ask questions and read what others are saying about the park. This year one of our concerns was the drought that is affecting all areas of the park. The further north you go the drier it gets. Of course we can only speak for the park as far ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318Head into the park for our last full day and night before we have to head out for the next part of our adventure. As we were heading to Berg en dahl we saw eleven rhino at various places as we drove along and then as we were heading down the road to Berg en dahl, the wild dogs came up the road toward us!We got to spend quite a bit of time with them as they were moving back and forth and would disappear and then reappear and must have had a kill somewhere nearby because when we saw them again, they looked fuller than before and then off they went to where we think they had a den site. The reason we believe this is they were in two groups and they ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318Drove to the park from Hazyview. Was crowded at gate but having the Wild Card made things move much faster! One of the first things we saw was a leopard in a river bed but was quickly lost to sight. We then came upon a large group of elephants and there was one young male that was misbehaving and ended up being admonished by the large females! It was so funny to see him cower and clearly know he had done something wrong. There was one of the elephants that kept kneeling on one leg but we are not sure what the reason was for this behavior. Finally made our way past the elephant show and continued on our way.Stopped at Skukuza for brunch, yoga and a walk before carrying on. As we headed ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318Out for early morning game drive and saw a game drive vehicle moving back and forth on the road and we watched to see what was going on. He circled back around and told us there had been a black rhino and it had gone down toward the river. We tried to find a place where the bank made it easy for the rhino to come out and also for us to see it. All of a sudden the black rhino came out on the road. Was huge! He came across the road and disappeared to the other side. Luckily for us, it was where there was a side road that ran parallel to the tar road. We raced around and got to the point where we saw the rhino munching away on some branches. ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318We are once again, behind in our stories and so some of the entries are run together or in this case something exciting like a leopard in a tree and has been given a story line of its own. From looking at the pictures, this appears to be the leopard we saw toward the end of the evening drive. There was an animal jam and people told us it was a leopard in a tree. The problem was people at one end of the jam were looking one way and people at the other end were looking the other way. So which was it?? Finally we talked to a couple who asked if we could see the leopard. No, well it is very hard to see but you can see from where we are........it is ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318Got some much needed rest and relaxation at Shoestrings before heading out to the park. Take the easy way out on dinner by going to the Protea Hotel which is just one block from their door. The food is nice and not outrageously expensive and fun to visit with the wait staff. Back to Shoestrings to catch up on news with Rob before heading to bed.Early up the next morning sharing a cup of coffee with Rob, and getting some supplies from him to make our trip more wonderful. Everything loaded and on our way. Thank you GPS for helping us get out of the city on on the toll road. The toll road is very easy to use and the tolls to Kruger Park are 50 rand for first one and 75 rand ... read more

I recently celebrated my birthday as a world traveller what better way was there than celebrating it at home with my loved ones. So this year I decided to visit Mpumalanga. It is one of the nine provinces in South Africa. Mpumalanga means the place where the sun rises. A province of great natural beauty situated in the high plateau grass of the midveld. The highlights of our trip was the Kruger national park, blyde river canyon and scenic panoramic views. If you pressed for time and working on a budget this is the best place to visit because most of the heritage sights costs as little as R10 local currency which is equivalent to 1usd. Most sights are along the panorama route. These includes God's window, wonder view, Lisbon falls,Berlin falls, Mac Mac falls, Three ... read more

Geo: -25.0557, 31.1318Trip to HazyviewGot up the next morning, Robert still not 100% but decided to get underway. Went and did shopping with Rob but did not get all we wanted but enough for a start and we will be staying the night in Hazyview so will have another chance to shop.Jerry and Tom are driving a van from Wicked that houses their vehicles at Rob's. Under the radar, you see with "On the highway to hell" on the back door and several other clever signs on the rest of the vehicle! The road was fine and not as crowded as it could have been for a weekend. Unfortunately there were a lot of aggressive drivers that thought nothing of getting right on your tail before they passed you! We were able to get all the way ... read more
