On leaving St. Lucia, my next destination was Sodwana Bay. Again, this is not an easy place to get to without your own transport and I knew it might be a bit of an effort. Firstly, I had to take the return journey to Mthubathuba. I found a minibus, but they said it would cost me 250 rand, despite the journey a couple of days in the opposite direction costing 17 rand. I resolved to try hitch, but got no joy from the many holidaying white South Africans, who clearly would never dream of picking up a smelly backpacker. Funnily enough, about 20 minutes later, the minibus that had tried to charge 250 rand passed by, this time half full with passengers and this time agreeing to let me on for the correct price. At Mthubathuba, ... read more

St.Lucia was my next destination after Durban. St. Lucia is a small beachside town, which is situated by an extremely unique estuary where crocodiles, hippos and sharks all live. It is also at the southern tip of the iSimangaliso National Park and is close to Cape Vidal, inside the NP, which is an incredible stretch of coastline. However, getting out of Durban proved to be quite a challenge. After getting some wrong information from my hostel (Happy Hippo – to be avoided) about, which bus station to go to, it took me 3 minibus-taxis and about an hour and a half to find a bus going to the wonderfully named Mthubathuba. From here I got another minibus (one of the worst and most packed I had been on in all of Africa) the short distance to ... read more

This week has been a bit of a roller-coaster! Monday morning was very sad (there were lots of tears) as Sarah and I had to say goodbye to Perry, Jess and Cassie. It’s been great to have such a close group of friends to share this experience with, and I couldn’t have asked for lovelier roommates than Jess and Cassie; or more enthusiastic, motivated people to be working with on projects. After saying our goodbyes, I was back at Ndabenhle Crèche. Although I had thought I might be at the primary school with our HIV class for one final morning, it was great to be back with the kids at Ndabenhle and many of them recognised me as I entered the classroom. My morning with the children definitely helped me feel better, and I received lots ... read more

When I eventually prised myself away from Coffee Bay, I took the shuttle bus back up to Mthatha. There I found a minibus going to Durban. This was the first time in South Africa I had gone back to the traditional African way of finding a minibus, taking my seat and waiting for it to fill up before we got to go. It took about an hour for it to fill up and, perhaps not too surprisingly, I was the only white person on it. It really could have been any country in Africa. It took about 7 hours to get to Durban after we were delayed a couple of times for over half an hour each time because of some works they were doing on the road. It was 9 o'clock on a Friday night ... read more

Hi All, we have started our migration south again as the middle of the winter has gone, not tthat we had much of that up here in KZN. Well we are now at Mac Nicols caravan park at Bazley beach just south of Scottburgh, this park has won the best park award in the past and it is not diffycult to see why, realy the besr park we have been to, the park is owned by caravaners themselves and thay know exactly what needs to be done to keep campers happy, when we arrived at our site after booking in there were already 4 staff members waiting to put up our tent and then a lady arived with tea, good stuf Mac Nicols. The down side is our tent is shot and needs replacing at a ... read more

I’ve had a fantastic and particularly rewarding week on projects. I had asked if I could be more involved in the HIV education, instead of working at a crèche in the mornings, so from Monday to Wednesday I’ve been teaching at Ubuhle Bemvelo Primary School with some of my fellow volunteers! The girls (and a few boys) we’ve been teaching are aged between 11 and 14, which may seem scarily young to be teaching about HIV, but it’s really important that the younger generation here are educated on the risks, how to protect themselves, and know that they can still live a healthy life even if they have the virus. Our days started at Snenhlanhla Crèche, where we were dropped off with the volunteers who were teaching at that crèche for the morning. We then spent ... read more

It was 1978 and I had been working for about two years. Some friends and I had started saving money to take a trip somewhere - no destination in mind yet; we were all just dreaming about it and putting our frugal cents together. As our savings improved slightly, one by one my friends started getting cold feet or needed their money for something else. Eventually I was the only one left still wanting to travel, but very little money saved and I was getting itchy feet. Eventually I couldn't wait any more as my patience vaporised and I started calculating where I could go with so little money. There was no way that I could leave the country with so little, so I took the next option: I decided to see a small portion of ... read more

I have had another great week here (although it’s pretty hard not to!) Monday was an emotional day, as we had to say goodbye to a big group of volunteers. It’s amazing how quickly you form a bond with people here, even after only knowing them for a week or two, and there were lots of tears as we waved goodbye. On Monday afternoon we welcomed the next group of volunteers, and all had a lovely evening down at the river jetty where we had sunset drinks and started to form new bonds! I started working at a Ndabenhle Crèche this week. It’s been great, but challenging and a very different experience from Inkanyezi Crèche last week! There’s a much greater range of ages at Ndabenhle, from babies to 5 and 6 year olds. Many of ... read more

I have had a fantastic week on projects and almost can’t believe how much I have packed in! I’ve loved working with some of my fellow volunteers at Inkanyezi Crèche, and the children are really starting to make progress. It constantly amazes me how quickly they learn new concepts, and how much joy they take from their learning; even if it is only making the letter ‘A’ from a pipe cleaner! I am also still surprised by how placid the children are; between activities they simply wait to take direction from the older children or the teachers. This is pretty amazing, especially considering some of the children are only 2 or 3 years old, and I love that they don’t express the desire to be constantly entertained - they simply ‘take it all in’. We have ... read more
