Well the flight over was a really cool experience. As I requested I was given a window seat; infact I was the only person in economy apart from another guy infront who had a seat to themselves. It seems everyone was bunched together tightly squeezed except us. Being served 2 meals, coke was on tap and the leg room bareable my journey to South Africa went without hitch. Arriving at the airport was met with some impact. Realising that 90% of people are coloured, the whole airport staff where black... something I have never really been around. I've been here for a couple of days now. Security seems to be the main issue. Everywhere you go there are gates, electric fences, security, huge dogs and a sence of terror. Everythings been pretty much low key since ... read more

So I arrive at the airport. No accomodation booked. My Mobile phone had almost no charge. I could bearly keep my eyes open. No local currency, AND I didnt havve a luggage trolley so had to carry my back pack every where. GRRRRRR I managed to get hold of a list of hotels and hostels in Johannesburg, and managed to get hold of a pay as you go sim card which was kindly put into my nearly dead phone. I actually managed to make one call before it died on me. Just enough time to book a place at the Backpackers Ritz of Johannesburg. The journey to the backpackers was interesting. All the place names were very simillar to places in London, Kew and Richmond for example. After the bad flight I had just had I ... read more

After following Tom on another 6 hour drive, going through a pass over the mountains again and dodging the speed cameras, we arrived in Giant’s Castle. The scenery was awesome and the hutted camp a delight. We had 2 self catering chalets with mountain views from the decks. Sarah and Tom had been shopping (big time) and had brought loads of food for the braais. It was cooler in the mountains than it had been in either Jo’burg or the Kruger, but we could still sit outside on the deck and listen to the river in the valley below. We were amazed when we woke the first morning because all the clouds had gone and we could now see the full extent of the berg - a sheer rock face shooting up into the sky from ... read more

It took under 2 hours to travel from the Kruger National Park to Umlani, a private game reserve in the Timbervati game reserve. The Timbervati is technically outside the Kruger, but is connected because there are no fences to stop the free roaming of the animals. We arrived just in time for lunch and then had an hour to unpack and explore before our first game drive. All the huts in the camp are thatched and the walls are made of bamboo poles. The windows are covered with mesh (no glass) and there are reed blinds that are pulled down at night. The door is a half door which has a bolt, but that is only there to stop the door opening at night! The shower is attached at the back of the hut and is ... read more

Hi all! Well, we've been having a fabulous time here in joburg, despite the razor wire and ak47s. We have had the most marvelous christmas with pauls family, countless family dinners, bbq (braai)s, lunches, breakfasts, golf, even the eventful trip to the mall was pleasant. I do like joburg, but for the people. Today we visited a friend of Mary-Anne's (pauls step aunt i think) who lives in a gated community. It has a lake in the middle and ducks and wild life, there is no razor wire or electric fences. Half the people don't even lock their doors. I think that if I were to live in joburg I'd like to live in a place like that. We were going to leave for mozambique tomorrow, but we have been offered a ride with a friend ... read more

The drive to the Kruger National Park was uneventful. Tom had bought a couple of shortwave walkie-talkies so that we could keep in touch as we were driving along. Great idea. The scenery en route was spectacular as we passed through the northern end of the Drakensburg Mountains. We dropped down from the mountains and when we stopped to buy some fruit we could feel the difference in the temperature. It was already getting quite hot. On arrival at Orpen Gate we went straight to the tented camp and found that a tent can be quite luxurious. Fortunately our tent was one of the more modern ones and so had electricity, complete with fridge, outdoor kitchen, ceiling fan and a fully functional bathroom. The fan helped to move the hot air around so that the 38 ... read more

This blog is to record our Christmas holiday in South Africa for family and friends (mainly Andrew and Lara who will not be able to see our photos any other way as they are on their own travels in Asia and whose own blog is providing us with hours of amusement). We set off from Heathrow on 21st December and, once we were trapped on the plane with no way of contacting the outside world, we were told that we would be detouring to Milan to refuel (legacy of the Buncefield oil terminal fire). This additional stop added 1.5 hrs to our journey, but we had no way of warning Sarah that we would late arriving. It also meant that we didn't get any food until almost midnight! Sarah and Tom were patiently waiting at Jo'burg ... read more

title says it all were are enjoying the easy life here with shelia and paddy (pauls grandparents) ryan, kimmy, pam, john and all the rest soon to arrive. Gin and tonics flow very freeely. The trip down was long, but we saw more elephants, camped in a superb campsite and ate well. We traded our remainer pula (currency of botswana) for a 7 foot tall giraffe, I near killed paul with it when he got back on the bus with it. I'm not entirely sure what we're going to do with it, but we'll figure it out after a few more g&t's The rain has followed us, but the temps are much cooler here maybe 25 in the day and down to 10 at night. it;s a pleasnat change though. tomorrow our brief tour will conitue. ... read more

After a late night out was picked up from my tour guide at the hotel to go to the Lion Park which is situated in Gauteng Province about an hour away. Picked up another family with a couple of kids and were one of the first visitors to arrive at the park that morning. The park stretches over 500 acres and is home to more than 70 lions. It is also home to many other wildlife such as ostriches, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, coyotes, springboks and giraffes. We drove off through the park, the land stretching out as far as the eye could see, trying to see if we could spot any of these animals. We first encountered an ostrich, next we passed a couple of grazing zebras. It always amazes me that each zebra has its ... read more

Arrived into Johannesburg after a long flight. Met up with most of the crew and some other crew members off another flight to go out to dinner at the popular "Butcher Shop". This was an experience unto itself. The restaurant is located just up the road from The Hilton Sandton where we stayed. It is one of many restaurants and bars in Sandton Square and seems to be pretty popular with the locals and tourists. Here i was sitting at the table with a giraffes neck leaning over my shoulder, a crocodile in the glass display cabinet with the selection of desserts and an ostrich standing over the other end of the table looking at me straight in the eye! For someone who is almost a vegetarian it was almost enough to put me off eating ... read more
