Hello everyone. So after surviving horrendously painful trapped wind which I had to endure on the flight and what seemed like a life time waiting around at Dubai airport I have made it to South Africa and it feels like I was meant to come here now. I actually started to feel like a local in Dubai because I was there for so long, I grew my beard, wore a white dressing gown whilst making a miserable looking suppressed female carry my bags 3 paces behind me. As you know I am not an experience traveler and I have seen people sleeping in the strangest positions possible in the airport lounge, and tourists taking pictures of luggage trolley’s and the like or old middle aged white men with young Malaysian women. I bought some new socks ... read more

Bob and the Mighty Zulus By Bob Harding Adventure holidays were just not my bag. In fact saying “just not my bag” was just not me, until my wife whisked me off to an amazing adventure to the depths of Norway on a husky / snowmobile safari . Let me tell you there’s nothing more exhilarating than seeing the Northern lights whilst being mushed through an ancient Nordic forest by huskies. Well, I was wrong; in fact I was so wrong I might as well have told one of them seven foot Norwegian husky drivers that he looked like a girl and his father smelled of elderberries. This time we had planned a Mighty Fine South African Safari Holiday ... read more

Johannesburg take... five? Twenty-five percent of South Africa’s Police Force is illiterate and as luck would have it, one of them pulled us over with an over-inflated sense of importance. “Can I see your license?” Derick pulls out his license. “You cannot drive this truck, wrong license,” he says. Incensed, Derick took a deep breath and asked why. After all for over three years now, Drifters have issued him this license to drive their trucks without problems. “Because sis truck is modified, it seyz that you cannot drive sis truck,” the spherical man says, rocking back on his heels and pointing to the back of the license. “It says up to 16 tonnes. This is a max 13tonne truck, its been modified to 10.” “You cannot drive this truck,” he insisted pointing to the trucks capacity ... read more

It has been a long break between blogs, whilst we spent the last month and a half in South Africa. For those of you who thought you had heard the last of us, we have now decided to extend our travels. Which means that we fly back to London tonight, spend five nights running around sorting out our lives so we can once again set off. This time we will be heading to Australia, where we will spend three months in Bundaberg (Queensland) picking fruit, and then see what happens after that. The three months harvesting work will allow us to extend our work permits for another year if needed. Below are some of the highlights of our South African leg. Our arrival in Johannesburg was a rather dramatic one, as Keith fell ill on the ... read more

Indiana Jones doesn't feature in this blog, however a filthy thieving monkey does! let me explain.. I was having my breakfast at 7:30am (the Cabanas does a mean buffet), and monkeys were coming down from the trees and stealing food off people's plates! Just back the the truck up..! To get to Sun City we took a sun bus from Jburg, and a couple of hours later... we were in the middle of nowhere! And a couple of more... we were in Sun City! While in Sun City :The Lost City we stayed in the Cabanas Hotel, one of the four main hotels in the resort. Each hotel has it's own unique attractions. The best hotel is the "Palace" and thats where the majority of the casino scene is. Sun City has practically every kind of ... read more

Being in South Africa, I couldn't leave before getting to see some game! The nearest game park was a couple of hours away. So I went via Sun city to the Pilanesberg National Park, where they have tourist type safari's setup. Being one of the premier game-spotting locations in africa, they boast the ability to see what's called the Big 5 game - Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Lion & Leopard. So we set off to the game park on a open truck! Apparently windows take away from the whole experience... Who am I to question the experts!? After trekking round for a bit, we spotted a rhino in the middle of the road! Rhino never quite entered into my top 10 as a road hazard, but there it was stopping traffic! We also saw some bubbles in ... read more

A dream has been realized, I finally got to see some real African animals roaming semi-freely in Africa. Many of you might not know this, but I am a bit of an “animal expert” in addition to being a total nerd. When I was little, my parents enrolled me in this animal index card club that sent out glossy photos with all kinds of facts on the back, like gestation times (elephant=22 months), habitat, and habits. So every month, little Breck would run to the mailbox, pull out the package, and greedily unwrap the cellophane from the cards. He would then force his little brother and sister to play safari games where the hunter (always little brother) inevitably ended up being gored to death by some sort of tusk, antler, or horn. I was officially ... read more

April 1st- April Fool’s day. I hope you all did not waste the opportunity to perform a stunt, prank, or practical joke on those that mean something to your life. What better way to demonstrate your long-lived love, like, or hatred for someone than a well-rehearsed lie. After much brainstorming, Breck and I decided the genre of shock/ horror would be most respectable. Considering our already heightened vigilance to crime in the city, we capitalized on the chance to distort reality. Our three targets slept innocently at the end of hallway: Tiffany, Samantha, and Christy. The scene required a minimum of setup and basic props: bloody butcher knife, pile of scattered cash, injured/dead victim (Breck), and of course some strategically- placed ketchup. We were ready. It began with slamming and banging of the doors and walls ... read more

Several days have passed since my last blog and it seems like there are a million things to talk about. The phone lines went out, as things tend to do around here, and with their eventual repair, the internet promptly stopped working for a couple days. So now it’s time to catch up. I spent the last of the weekend trying to get things in order and recover from the jet lag, that along with three meals, six bottles of water, four sanitary wipes, a blanket, four and a half movies, and lounging socks, came complimentary with my 18 hour flight. We discovered this pizza place within walking distance from the b&b and I have eaten there twice. I say walking distance, but one thing that you learn quite quickly when you don’t have a car ... read more
