The day got off to an unimaginably perfect start - our first breakfast of cereal with English-tasting milk for almost 6 months. What followed was pretty enjoyable too - a trip to the mall for grocery shopping, a few dips in the pool and lunch outside in the sunshine. In the evening Ted took us out for dinner to an entertainment complex. Most day-to-day activities here involve driving to a secure complex of some sort because of the quite unbelievable crime situation. We were pretty happy just with the change from hostels though. ... read more

After a couple of hours sleep and a brief stop in Cape Town, we arrived in Johannesburg, We had initially planned to spend 3 days visiting the Drakensburg Mountains, but in the end abandoned that idea as too rushed. Instead we were met at the airport by a very good friend of Gemma’s parents, Ted, who has lived in South Africa for the past 30 odd years. Setting the theme for the next couple of days we had lunch on the terrace by the pool, tried to get over our jet lag and had a long evening drinking South African wine chatting late into the night. One incident that did make us realise that we were now in South Africa was that Ted’s house alarm went off for some reason. Once all had been turned off ... read more

We recently attended a large fireside, which is a Bahá’í meeting particularly focused on answering the questions of people who are interested in learning more about the Faith. Our friend Suha spoke on the basics of Islam. He related it to the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith and brought out the beauty in Islam that many miss these days. About 40 people were there, and we enjoyed spending time with friends and making new ones, including some who were Muslim.... read more

Full Fare - Go Anywhere I got out of Jo'burg by upgrading and paying a full fare. Elaine was not prepared for Singapore Airlines to continue us mucking around. Cathy Schroder at Jetset Travel in Southlands was a great help getting this organized, and Qantas were able to change my local flights so that I got back to Canberra early on 14/12. The trip was not without its minor hiccups, but nothing to compare to the previous couple of days. My luggage had gone ahead - don't ask me how. We were told that it was in Canberra, but it was still in Sydney, and I could have collected it the previous evening on my arrival there. Qantas got it to me later in the day. Its good to be home. PS - here is my ... read more

More pole pole Didn't get away again today! Spent most of the day at the airport. First waiting for Singapore to finally decide whether they could board me from the waitlist, and then trying to get them to allow Kenya Airways to move me. Neither happend, and I have spent the night at a rather nice guest house close to the airport. Sipping Coffee Slowly E has arranged a new e-ticket to get me home. See if that works this morning. With any luck will be able to spend the day on the international side of the immigration barrier in an airport lounge, rather than slowly sipping coffee on the outside so that I can sit longer in the cafe! ... read more

Leaving Kenya - Eventually Had a car booked to get out to the airport the 2.5 hours Kenya Airways stated was an absolute imperative, only to find that they were taking a much more relaxed attitude to opening the check-in counters. Nonetheless, had plenty of time before the scheduled 0735 departure to browse most of the duty free. Pole pole Managed to find a couple of Kili related articles - tee-shirt emblazoned with 'pole pole' and a baseball style cap, as well as some other things for people back home. Not the greatest duty free, but at the time I thought that I would be in Singapore right now. But I'm not. Its been a rather pole pole day. The aircraft went u/s as soon as it was pushed back, and we were off-loaded while it ... read more

Ive finally got a chance to do this travelblog thing. I don’t think it will be as exciting as Russ and Debs, so sorry in advance. Mainly, the past 2 weeks have been spent getting used to this place and the various unique aspects to living in Joburg. Everywhere you go you are fully aware that you are not living in a normal place. I am actually staying in a flat in Benoni, about 50k’s from Central Joburg, which is probably a bit better than Joburg itself. The flat is seperate to a house owned by Dave’s uncle and is on the same property, in a housing area with guards at a boomgate. We have a pass on our car which lets us through. There are 2 gates like this, and the rest of the roads ... read more

Yes I really did leave Sydney, barely. I went to check in and Thai Air said I couldn't fly without an onward ticket from S. Africa. I had to go over to Quantas and buy a fully refundable (minus fees) ticket back to Sydney. But I made the plane and I am currently in Johannesburg, S. Africa. I've been here since Thursday morning. Amazingly I'm still jetlagged. I don't have any trouble staying up until 10 or 11 at night, but I keep waking up at 2AM and am ready to be out of bed by 4AM. That is ok, I'll adapt here shortly. I haven't done much either. Mostly just research and planning for where to go next. We will talk about that later. What have I done. Well I went to a lion park ... read more

Today we attended a lecture at the National Bahá’í Centre that was given by a public health nurse named Abdia. Abdia was speaking on the subject of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. She was one of a small number of health professionals who had formed The Bahá’í Health Agency of South Africa (BHASA). The BHASA was an organization that the late Dr. Shamam Bakshandegi had hoped to form. In 1994 Dr. Bakhshandegi was one of the Bahá’ís who were killed in Ciskei. Other health professionals eventually formed the BHASA as a memorial to the young dentist’s concerns for the health of the people of South Africa. We had for some time believed that we needed to know more about the subject of HIV/AIDS, particularly as the disease is so much more prevalent in Africa. Abdia initially asked ... read more

We have visited a number of the shopping malls here in Jo’burg, some quite large. Rosebank Mall had the usual shops and boutiques, but it also had a crowded collection of small booths that are called the African Market, and one Sunday a month a much larger African Market takes over the entire top level of a large parking garage. Here we found some wonderful arts and crafts objects. There was the usual tourist stuff, but there was also a lot of remarkable wood and stone carving, beadwork, metalwork and textiles from all over Africa. Many of the artists and craftsman who had made these objects had very little to work with. As an example, we saw some wonderful baskets that were made of electrical wire and others that had been woven out of plastic shopping ... read more
