We were quite scared of Jo'burg, so landed, collected our hire car and pretty much bypassed the city, stopping only for a tour of Soweto. This was very good, if somewhat intrusive, but we got to see the township - from its millionaires row with Winnie Mandela's 24 room house with pool to the poorer areas where they had only recently had water provided. From Jo'burg we drove across to Kruger National Park, enjoying the scenary as we went. Really good views across the landscape - better in the morning as it was burning season so in the afternoons the valleys tended to fill up with haze. The animals in Kruger gave a fabulous performance, which we watched from our car. A herd of elephants crossed the road just infront of us soon after we entered the ... read more

I arrived in Jo'Burg which apparently is the most dangerous city in South Africa, and you could easily see it was. Every home had 10 feet high fences with razor wire along the top and 2-3 guard dogs barking. I had one day there until I would meet Jas and Ryan in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I spent the first part of the morning in Lion Park where I got to see many lion's of course along with other animals. The highlight of this trip was petting a white lion cub and driving through lion dens. I then went to Monte Casino, which looks like a giant castle from the outside, but the inside is desinged to appear like you are outside in an old aged town. The shops looked like old houses and the ceiling ... read more

Hello everyone. So after surviving horrendously painful trapped wind which I had to endure on the flight and what seemed like a life time waiting around at Dubai airport I have made it to South Africa and it feels like I was meant to come here now. I actually started to feel like a local in Dubai because I was there for so long, I grew my beard, wore a white dressing gown whilst making a miserable looking suppressed female carry my bags 3 paces behind me. As you know I am not an experience traveler and I have seen people sleeping in the strangest positions possible in the airport lounge, and tourists taking pictures of luggage trolley’s and the like or old middle aged white men with young Malaysian women. I bought some new socks ... read more

Bob and the Mighty Zulus By Bob Harding Adventure holidays were just not my bag. In fact saying “just not my bag” was just not me, until my wife whisked me off to an amazing adventure to the depths of Norway on a husky / snowmobile safari . Let me tell you there’s nothing more exhilarating than seeing the Northern lights whilst being mushed through an ancient Nordic forest by huskies. Well, I was wrong; in fact I was so wrong I might as well have told one of them seven foot Norwegian husky drivers that he looked like a girl and his father smelled of elderberries. This time we had planned a Mighty Fine South African Safari Holiday ... read more

Johannesburg take... five? Twenty-five percent of South Africa’s Police Force is illiterate and as luck would have it, one of them pulled us over with an over-inflated sense of importance. “Can I see your license?” Derick pulls out his license. “You cannot drive this truck, wrong license,” he says. Incensed, Derick took a deep breath and asked why. After all for over three years now, Drifters have issued him this license to drive their trucks without problems. “Because sis truck is modified, it seyz that you cannot drive sis truck,” the spherical man says, rocking back on his heels and pointing to the back of the license. “It says up to 16 tonnes. This is a max 13tonne truck, its been modified to 10.” “You cannot drive this truck,” he insisted pointing to the trucks capacity ... read more

It has been a long break between blogs, whilst we spent the last month and a half in South Africa. For those of you who thought you had heard the last of us, we have now decided to extend our travels. Which means that we fly back to London tonight, spend five nights running around sorting out our lives so we can once again set off. This time we will be heading to Australia, where we will spend three months in Bundaberg (Queensland) picking fruit, and then see what happens after that. The three months harvesting work will allow us to extend our work permits for another year if needed. Below are some of the highlights of our South African leg. Our arrival in Johannesburg was a rather dramatic one, as Keith fell ill on the ... read more

Indiana Jones doesn't feature in this blog, however a filthy thieving monkey does! let me explain.. I was having my breakfast at 7:30am (the Cabanas does a mean buffet), and monkeys were coming down from the trees and stealing food off people's plates! Just back the the truck up..! To get to Sun City we took a sun bus from Jburg, and a couple of hours later... we were in the middle of nowhere! And a couple of more... we were in Sun City! While in Sun City :The Lost City we stayed in the Cabanas Hotel, one of the four main hotels in the resort. Each hotel has it's own unique attractions. The best hotel is the "Palace" and thats where the majority of the casino scene is. Sun City has practically every kind of ... read more

Being in South Africa, I couldn't leave before getting to see some game! The nearest game park was a couple of hours away. So I went via Sun city to the Pilanesberg National Park, where they have tourist type safari's setup. Being one of the premier game-spotting locations in africa, they boast the ability to see what's called the Big 5 game - Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Lion & Leopard. So we set off to the game park on a open truck! Apparently windows take away from the whole experience... Who am I to question the experts!? After trekking round for a bit, we spotted a rhino in the middle of the road! Rhino never quite entered into my top 10 as a road hazard, but there it was stopping traffic! We also saw some bubbles in ... read more
