Can't she shut up! Apologies but this is my record too and I felt there was a bit more to add. Instead of a nice hot finish on the beach it was chilly and wet on the Saturday so we ended up in the nearest tourist attraction, Bayworld - not Baywatch - and saw the dolphins close up performing as they do. It was only a few hundred yards away and the tropical fish always amaze you with theri colours and the turtles with their ponderous movement and prehistoric faces. I think we were please we had seen dolphins in the sea and our miracle turtle on the beach. Sunday when we were leaving was hot and sunny in PE which gave us a chance for a last walk through the flea market to buy some ... read more

OK so Joburg is known as the crime capital but to me it's just a really normal place to go. Feels a bit weird to be honest, I'm meant to be off travelling and here I am being greeted by Carlyn at the airport and staying in my Omi's old house in a double room with ensuite and balcony - I'm not exactly roughing it! From to moment I arrived I have been faced head on with all the crap that is going on here; the whole Zuma thing and I'm slowly trying to understand more of the history and culture which has to be honest slightly aluded me on previous trips (spending time with family is hardly condusive to learning abotu new cultures! We normally spend our time speeding from one family meal to the ... read more

Today we awoke and had a pretty lazy day in store. It was about 90 degrees and it felt like everything you did took a little extra effort. Outside our room the field was alive with animal activity. Lots of wildebeest and zebras were filling the fields. We watch them play and find tree stumps to scratch their private parts. I can’t imagine not being able to scratch your balls when you want. It was really funny to watch. Also, we had a family of Franklin visit the patio. The chicks (baby Franklin) decided to make a break for the inside of the room. In a rush to close the door (the first time in my life I rushed to kick chicks out of the house) I scared the birds and they flew away from the ... read more

Oh the irony 6 months ago the idea of meeting up with Tracey’s parents somewhere in Africa seemed great. They picked the safest country, Kenya, and everything was booked. Skip forward to Christmas and thanks to some questionable elections Kenya’s reputation as a tourist haven is ruined. Suddenly our trip through Zimbabwe and South Africa seemed tame compared to the violent images of Nairobi in the news. We predicted it would calm down in time for Sherrie and Ian to visit and luckily it did. No more trouble So, with the Foreign Office giving Brits the green light to return to Kenya the trip was back on. We arrived in Nairobi and got to our hotel without spotting a single sign of unrest. We enjoyed the pool bar and restaurant for a few hours, grabbed ... read more

We had a great day poolside at Bakabung. Wow, that African sun is no joke. Then we went for our first drive alone in Pilanesberg National Park. It was interesting to say the least. Dan was navigator and Dave drove. We headed towards where we were told there were elephants, and on the way spotted two giraffes up close. Wow! That’s definitely as close as I’ve ever been to an animal that large. They’re so tall! (how cliché, right? But man is it true!). We also saw impala and a stray wildebeest or two along the way. Then we got way close to a rhino. We opened the door to the van to see it better and it was maybe 10 feet away. OK now THIS is the closest I’ve ever been to an animal that ... read more

Today was different from anything I’ve ever experienced. We woke up early for a relaxing morning on our patio, only to be greeted by vervet monkeys, franklins, several types of birds, warthogs, and more. It was pretty exciting without leaving the house! After a low-key day of some grocery shopping, grilled cheeses, and naps, we then hit our first safari ride into the bush in the late afternoon. Can I just say it was SO COOL! We were in this huge Land Rover-type vehicle that seated 20. At first the animals we saw were pretty far away: a baboon troop, a couple of lone white rhinos, some water bucks. Then the real excitement began with our first giraffe, a gang of wildebeests, some impala with another wildebeest, a pack of zebras (pronounced “zeh-bra” here in SA ... read more

We're actually here! But to back up to two days ago, when we left..... Feddy and I found many ways to make airports and travel more fun than the average person. We have been playing a game called "Talk to random people everywhere you go, and make up your story." It is fun creating an identity for yourself. So far, among others, Gertrude and Lindsay are on their way to return a lion cub to his home, and we have been two nameless girls (because this guy never inquired about our names), who quit our jobs, sold all our stuff, gave away all our money and are on our way to travel the world solely on the kindness and generosity of others (and I really like this idea...maybe my next adventure...I have enough faith in humanity ... read more

Im at an airport backpackers right next to the airport in jo'burg getting ready for our flight later on today to singapore. Just got back from our safari yesterday in the Kruger National Park which is the size of israel! Amazing experience, we saw all of the big five, lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino amoungst hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, antelope and hyenas. on the first night me and shane were staying up late talking then a hyena just strolled past the fence of our camp about 50cm away! had a couple of shaky moments with some young male elephants aswell, hopefully try and get the videos up of that. before the safari we went to a small african country called swaziland, which is such a laid back cool little country. And i actually have some ... read more

Last night in South Africa is upon us - post safari & Swaziland, we're on our way to Singapore tomorrow, where we do South East Asia. Just outside Jo'burg right now, but everything seems a bit more flat after you've seen leopards, elephants, hyenas, and most other animals at 6.30 am! Safari was brilliant - Kruger park is the size of Israel, so pretty big and endless. Got to see 'The Big 5' - Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino. Most sightings were due to the guy who was taking us around - could spot rhinos 300 metres away through trees and grass while driving... Hippos, Giraffes, Crocodiles and Hyenas were also around - at one point, a couple of hyenas were just sleeping by the side of the road, 2 metres from the car! Elephants ... read more

Eerst een vlucht ... read more
