We're Here!!!!!!!!!! After an 11 hour flight (40 minutes delayed of course), we touched down at Johannesburg airport woo!!! To be honest the flight was awesome, we had TV screens in the back of the seat in front of us, free drinks, and a free blanket, which is of course the most mportant thing. I watched the Pursuit of Happyness (again), slept for about 8 hours, had a (quite minging) breakfast, watched Shrek the Third and it was over! Through passport control, picked up our backpacks, wrestled with the pacsafe and then fell over trying to actually get the packs on our back. Realised we didnt have the phone number for our hostel so found tourist information, one of the 'helpful' people walked in front of us even though we could clearly see where we were ... read more

Yes, you may have thought we had vanished off the face of Africa, but no really we had no internet access and we were fighting the lions, tigers and bears and fires (will expand later). So just to recap when we last wrote we were in Malawi and since then we have travelled through Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa to end up at our final destination of Johannesburg. So whats been happening….. I think it’s worth flying through our time in Zambia which more a transit on the way to Zimbabwe than anything else. Although we did stockpile on fuel and food as the instability in Zim meant that they were both in intense demand and we were avoiding major cities. So with our 5,000 kg of mince and 88,000 litres of alcohol we headed ... read more

Hey everyone! Sorry it has been so long since i last updated this, but the internet has been scarce and then the site was down- as I am sure you all know! Thanks to all of those that helped find my entries! There was no way I was going to be able to do that from here! I truely appreciate it! So here is the update.... I think the last time I updated this I was in Swokopmund.... MAn that was ages ago! From Swokopmund we headed north to Windhoek where we enjoyed some down time in the city and met up with our new group of people who then traveled up to Zambia with us. We had a full truck of 18- man that was a tight squeeze! We had 6 Americans- Marney and Steve, ... read more

We arrived in SA just fine--I whizzed through passport control on my SA passport, while Ross and Owen took 45 minutes to get through the "other passports" line. We zoomed over to the domestic terminal and asked about getting on an earlier flight to Joburg. After waiting and waiting for them to board all scheduled passengers, we were sad to hear that we wouldn't be on the flight after all. Exhausted does not begin to describe how we were feeling! So, back past security and into the 1Time line again we went. About this time, we discovered that a belt in the baggage-moving system had broken, and consequently, EVERY check-in desk was at a standstill. No flights were leaving, because they wanted bags to go with the passengers, and bags were not leaving the check-in area. ... read more

On Our Own! Although it was a bit sad leaving all our mates on the truck, it was exciting for us to contemplate doing our own thing at our pace. We drove out of Joburg airport in our little blue Clio, immediately having to negiotate city centre motorways and traffic. Fortunately our map seemed pretty clear and we found our way to Fourways, the northern suburb of Joburg where we had booked accommodation. Unfortunately there was a mistake in the directions we had been given, so we were driving around the area for ages before we found the hostel. However, this gave us a good opportunity to check out the local amenities and we got excited about the huge shopping malls after 5 weeks overlanding! Eventually we bumped our way down a dirt track to ... read more

Greetings all! Unfortunately my time in South Africa has come ot an end. What an amazing 12 days it has been. In this post we have: my safari, attacking monkies, Johannesburg crime, and the apartheid museum. Let's get started... Upon my arrival in Johannesburg I was greeted by Patrick, the owner of the hostel I was staying at. That night, we had a couple drinks together and watched cricket until 2 in the morning. I guess you could say that we're pretty much best friends by now... The next morning I was whisked off to Kruger National Park to chase some animals on a three day safari. to be perfectly honest, the safar ididn't quite live up to my expectations. Out of the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) we only saw two- a ... read more

So we finally made it to Jo'burg. Here's what you've missed so far. Flight over At 4PM CST on Thursday, June 21 we stepped into Chicago's O'Hare Airport. At 8AM GMT +1 (1AM CST) on Saturday, June 23, we stepped off of our third plane in our fourth airport. Finally, at 9:30 GMT +1 that same morning, we left the airport. We had traveled for nearly 35 hours, and had come away with many lessons. For instance: Never take a 757 for a transatlantic flight. They were not built for 7+ hours of travel. Just trust us. If you see six kids within two rows of your seats on a transatlantic flight, calmly and quietly stand up and remove yourself from the plane. Always have at least one aisle seat on a long flight.
