A morning tourThursday, August 26. We are supposed to tour Joburg, but half the town is on strike and some of them are behaving badly and others are just crowding the streets so we stay on the freeway that circles the town and drive directly to Soweto, a Johannesburg suburb of over 3 ½ million people. Thoroughly modern freeway system incidentally, complete with heavy traffic. This is just brutalHomes seem to be divided into three types in Soweto. 1) Miles, upon miles, upon miles of tiny tin-roofed shacks make up the majority of homes here. 2) A smattering of larger homes, but with shacks in the yards. Owners of these homes sell space for the shacks. 3) And finally a newer level of homes that belong to the professionals like doctors and attorneys. These are three ... read more

These photos are from a clinic we did about 3 weeks ago after I returned from the playing tour. I had the opportunity of sharing the Gospel message afterward. Although translation was needed, I pray that many kids were able to understand the message of Jesus and accept Him as their Savior.... read more

Day 12 Not a good one ;-(((( Up early again and we spent most of it sat in the truck while the tracker/ ranger tried (and failed) to find something……… then (because Eng came 2nd) we had to bomb it back to J’brg to watch Eng v Ger - enuff said, Fortunately we had tickets to Soccer City for Mex v Arg, and whilst the admin of getting there was a lot after driving back from the Kruger, it was more than worth it - the place is stunning - easily the best stadium I have ever been to, although I was up in the Gods again so the atmosphere was a bit flat - or thinking about it, that was probably just me still sulking about a Uruguayan linesman and not seeing any lions (either ... read more

Ok, quick update on my World Cup jolly to date... - Staying in Soweto, the biggest township in the world - Witnessed 2 muggings already. One late at night on another train platform and another in broad daylight in the local shopping centre. - I carry little of value when walking but mainly get organised taxis everywhere - One shooting occurred less than 500m from my tent last night - Peeps are okish but don't really trust le crazy white folk - Basically don't leave the backpackers unless we go to a game which we get to by organised bus. Fed and watered there and they have cable for all games. - Prolly the most unsettling place I've ever been. - The combined roughness of Grangetown, Moss Side, Aston, Toxteth, Tower Hamlets, Devonport, Maroubra and Dee ... read more

Don't believe a single word of the previous journal. It's a total lie but it's probably what most people think is reality in Soweto. It's actually great. Staying at one of the best backpackers I have ever been to. Locals are fantastic. They have a real passion for life. We've had numerous lifts from locals, been helped everywhere we've been. I've already been asked a number of times by the local homies to tell everyone how great Soweto, Jo'burg and South Africa is. So...COME TO SOWETO, JO'BURG AND SOUTH AFRICA...IT'S GREAT!! Yes, it is a little dodgy at night but you act the same as you would wherever you go. So, so far I've done: - got tout tickets for Argentina v Korea for $30 :) - got tout tickets for USA v Slovenia for $20 ... read more

The Denmark vs Holland game received much publicity as newspapers in both countries have been very irreverent to Islam's Mohammad. Naturally, that meant more people heading there and a higher profile. There were seven of us going to this game. Only four of us had tickets, while the other three negotiated with scalpers to get better tickets than us at lower prices. Once again, FIFA efficiency at work. They should all be taken out the back and shot. I've already sent an email to Ossama with the suggestion. Speaking of Bin Laden, Al Qaeda had already stated that this game would be a target because of the cartoons in Dutch and Danish newspapers. Or maybe just the Danish newspapers and these guys can't tell the difference between Danish and Dutch. Such simpletons. Just shoot the ... read more

Hey everyone!! Sorry I haven't been able to post sooner as the internet connections in Africa weren't always the quickest, so I'm posting after the fact. This is one of probably 4 or 5. I'm actually back in Europe - Den Haag to be exact but Africa was AMAZING!! It's definitely a country that I will be returning to as there is still so much to see and explore. I arrived in S. Africa on March 12th and met our friend Brad and on the following Saturday, our 5 friends, Maureen (Brad's wife), Deborah(Maureen's baby - ha!), Lisa K. and Danielle and Josh flew in. Our few days in Joburg definitely helped me to see the stark reality of the hardship. I know there was much that I took for granted being a US citizen. The ... read more

Johannesburg Saturday 6th March When I told friends that I was going to South Africa most people’s reaction was the same - “Don’t go to Johannesburg”. So here I am. I have no choice, really - the next organised trip I’ve arranged sets out from here tomorrow. I arrived here from Cape Town yesterday expecting the same heat as we had been experiencing in Cape Town, only to arrive in a thunderstorm. Today I’ve been out with a waterproof and it’s been non-stop sunshine all day. Soweto I’ve managed to avoid spending the day hiding in my hotel room in fear of being robbed and murdered and I’ve booked myself on a coach trip to Soweto. I don’t imagine that a coach tour to Soweto will be one lots of comfort breaks and a stop at ... read more
