hello, howzit, unjani? SO i arrived at the OR Tambo, formally Joburg Int'l Airport, yesterday morning around 7,30 am. The driver from the back packers was almost two hours late due to extreme traffic, which we experienced on the way back as well. SO this gave me time to run up to Woolworths and buy a cellphone which by the way the number is +27-73-589-5302 !!!!! so I bought some airtime and was ready to go. once the driver arrived, we tossed my bags in the minibus and headed to SOWETO. I have wanted to visit Soweto for quite some time, it has a very intense history. it includes Klip, Meadowlands, and Orlando.. some of the original homelands set up by the Apartheid regime in the 1940s. The township is now very mixed, some of the ... read more

Hi all!!! ... read more

Day 26 - Jo'burg (South Africa) - 24/8/09 Woke up this morning in Damien's room knowing that it would be a very emotional day as everybody who I had been travelling with for the last 3 weeks would be heading off to Jo'burg or to Cape Town whilst I was flying down to Jo'burg to start my 5 weeks independent adventure. Everybody was waking up and I wondered over to the Anna's tent to find out what had happened to Juliette. It turns out that she had stayed out all night and still wasn’t back, I helped Anna take her tent down. Everybody was at breakfast and I managed to sneak my last breakfast on the truck (thanks Robin!), eggs on toast. When it was time for everybody to go, it was a time for tears ... read more

I decided to spend the day exploring a bit more of Johannesburg. Although I love the South African countryside and animals I felt I should learn something of the history of the country. I booked a tour that would cover the city centre, the Apartheid Museum and Soweto. Johannesburg is a large city covering more than 2,500 km sq. It was founded after the discovery of gold in the area by Australian prospector George Harrison in 1886. Thousands of diggers rushed to the area and those who had the wealth to finance underground mines did so on a large scale. By 1889 Johannesburg was the largest city in South Africa, and the most multicultural, with white and black fortune seekers alike being drawn by the promise of gold. These fortune seekers were treated with mistrust by ... read more

sawubona!!! (that'd be hello in zulu!) 2nd Feb, Soweto Hello again!!! Where did i leave you guys? Oh yeah, hung-over! Or at least Becky was. That was how she spend most of the day, so we took it easy, kicking back in the gardens under the shade of a big old tree. I took my camera out to try and get some photographs of the birds, they are quick little buggers though! Managed to catch the sun a little more than i would have liked, forgot about the back of my neck when i was getting busy with the sun cream. As the sun set we headed out into Hyde Park for Chinese takeaway (some habits you just can’t kick!) it was awesome, and less than £2! I spent the evening reading a Danny Wallace book; ... read more

“I’m from the United States,” said the Black youth, surveying our reactions. I flinch at this introduction, considering our surroundings. I’m standing in Kliptown, a shantytown of sorts - a miniscule corner of Soweto just outside Johannesburg. I’m confused as to how an American teenager of any creed or culture could end up as one of the four million people living here. “I’m from the United States of Africa,” he clarifies, and I smile at his clever turn of phrase. “South Africa is all of Africa - every country, every person, we all live in South Africa.” This is it. This is the moment when I know I have fully arrived in a new country. This is South Africa. From Johanesburg to Cape Town by bus, we have an entire country to discover in the next ... read more

Ah, today was much better. I arrived in Johannesburg two nights ago (Oct. 30), and it was nearly midnight by the time I got to my hostel. Yesterday was spent trying to get myself organized here and I just seemed to have one problem after another with getting money sorted, my cell phone, my camera card, my electrical adaptor, the internet . . . anyway, most things are now sorted. First thing this morning, I was picked up at my hostel by my guide, Michael. I joined 2 girls from Sweden and we went on a Soweto tour. Soweto (South Western Township) is likely South Africa’s most famous township. Townships are the areas on the outskirts of cities that started like shanty towns or squatters camps. Their populations vastly multiplied first when people were drawn from ... read more

Soweto, continued... Day 4 Saturday (9/6/08) we had set aside for service opportunities in Soweto. My guest house group was late to meet up with everyone at Lebo's because the van sent to pick us up was in a vehicle accident on the way to get us-- a common occurence in Joburg. When we finally arrived, we set off in two groups on walking tours of the township we were in, called Orlando West. Our group brought donations for the children in the area, so our guide, Philip, told us to bring pens and pencils with us to hand out, but NO toys, as they would cause fighting. The neighborhood kids were the first recipients of our giftts, until Philip asked us to wait to give things out to the kids that really needed them, even ... read more

Sawubona! (hello in Zulu) -- Days 2 though 3 The past few days have brought two extremes-- elite wealth and absolute poverty. Because this is a business-focused UW course, we are visiting multiple companies throughout South Africa, which the students have all studied and prepared for. We added to that knowledge by meeting with a lecturer for the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) to talk about the challenges and opportunities facing South African businesses. This provided a solid base for questions and understanding at our first company visit, to First National Bank in Johannesburg. After a long security check-in process, we werewelcomed with coffee, tea and breakfast items to a stunning board room, complete with padfolios for each of us and a "goodie bag" full of info on the company. FNB executives gave a very ... read more
