Today we ride from Mossel Bay to the Addo National Park. I ended up starting late again and riding own my own for most of the way. I eventually catch up to (Peri, Ian, and Otto) but lose them in Plettenberg Bay wandering around looking for lunch. I lunch on my own (again) and find Phebe & Patrick, Ellen and Murray just as I’m about to stop for gas in Humansdorp. They suggested I catch up to them as they ride R330 to get away from the boring N2 highway. I didn’t catch up them but was instead schooled on how to drive mountain passes by a crazy courier in his modified half-ton going over 140km/h. I catch up to another group (Peter, Bob, Bon Bon, Bruno & Kris and Norm & Fionnuala as I was ... read more

Hello all I am sorry that it has taken me so long to write another blog, I have been out in the middle of nowhere for the last while and the internet connection has been down. Wooooo fun! Okay so I will have to fill you in on all my adventures since Christmas. We went out to Jefferies Bay on the 27th for a few days to meet some of the girls from our original volunteer orientation group. We stayed at this hostel called Island Vibe which as you can see from the pictures is right on the beach. I loved it there. The atmosphere took a little getting used to though seeing as they partied until about 4am every night. It took me a bit but I finally figured out that if I just join ... read more

Wow it's been a long time since my posting, but the most important news of all - my trip plans are finalized! I'm flying from PE to Jo'burg (Johanesburg) tomorrow, then off to Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday the day before my 14 day tour starts! We're headed over to the Masai Mara, which is universally known as that place where the great masses of herd migration take place (i'm sure you've probably seen something to that effect on TV and in movies - ie. a million wildebeest running up and down big valleys). After that, we head into Uganda and over to Bwindi National Park were we get to hang out with Mountain Gorrillas for a day (if we find them that is!). After that tour ends in Nairobi, i'll be spending 5 days just hanging ... read more

Looks like we're headed to Barney's Tavern on the beach tonight, and if it doesn't rain (it looks like it might) there will be a fireworks show! The backpackers hostel we're staying at is having a little pre-outing braii (Afrikaans word for BBQ) so we're sure to meet lots of people and have a fantastic time! I'm also hoping to stay up late enough to see the sun rise over the ocean - but we'll see how the night goes ;o) HAVE A GREAT NEW YEARS EVERYBODY! - SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE! (ie. next year!!)... read more

Hello all This last week was a very short work week! We went back to the reserve on Sunday night, worked Monday and then headed off on tuesday for our trip to Cape Town. We got to go on the Lion walk with Colin and Annetti on Monday morning alone so it was well worth all the good pictures! Just got back from Capetown yesterday so now I am back in quiet old PE. We went there for our Christmas beach party which was okay but a bit boring. We all ended up leaving early and sitting on the balcony at Zula in Cape Town for hours listening to live music and drinking. I have to say that I couldn't be happier to be where I am right now. I am having a hard time thinking ... read more

It is so hard to decide where to begin when i think of all the memorable events! I think i'm going to go with whatever pops into my head, so please excuse the randomness and lack of organization, but enjoy the stories! I bet you guys have never thought about this, but if you pay attention to what you do when you're crossing the road, you'll notice that you ALWAYS look to the left, and then to the right. Because the traffic to your left is immediately in front of you, and traffic coming from the right will be coming down the other side of the road. Well. Traffic here is like the UK, they drive on the other side (the right side) of the road. And Shona and I have noticed, that we have a ... read more

Hello All Okay so obviously if you are reading this you are checking out my new blog. I know it is a bit more impersonal but the internet here is very slow and unreliable so this will at least allow me to do things a bit more efficiently. And I can attach pictures!! Okay enough of that and onto life in South Africa. All is still well and I am having a good time but I wish I was doing a bit more. I feel a bit like a tag along sometimes but we are slowly being allowed to do more. On Thursday I experienced culling for the second time. We got up at 4:30am to go and shoot two Blesbok for the predators to enjoy. It is hard to see but I also understand the ... read more

Hey guys, quick shout just to say "I'm in Port Elizabeth!!" Again, i dont have my camera cable on me... i really gotta start carrying that thing around with me :o) The bus ride here was amazing... one of those sleepliners... super spacious and big windows. It made the trip super easy to handle. And we got here and the Kwantu people picked us up... in a Beamer. Yes, a brand new (think brand new car smell) BMW.... i think Shona and i lucked out on our volunteer placement ;o) There are so many many things to tell you guys (i.e. it sounds like we're going to get to help out with "Lion Walks" which.... get ready for this.... is when you take tourists for hikes ALONGSIDE tame lions. Yup. Does it GET any cooler than ... read more
