We spent the past three days at Bulungula Lodge. It is an eco friendly lodge owned and run by a Xhosa village called Nqileni. It is a Backpackers (aka a youth hostel) but was more mellow than your typical hostel. We took Greyhound to the city of Mthatha where we were picked up a shuttle from the lodge. The shuttle was a covered Land Rover pickup with seats in the back. I could tell by the dust everywhere that we were in for a rough ride. The first hour was on paved streets but the last 1.25 hours was on rough dirt road. The driver sped along these rough roads at 50mph. He was constantly avoiding animals such as dogs, chickens and cows as well as people. But he never hit anything and we arrived right ... read more

Taking the 7 hour flight on a Boeing 747 Malaysian air flight I left my journey of nearly 5 months in South America for Cape Town, South Africa. Landing on the continent of Africa has been a big dream of mine for years. The wildlife, the people, cultures and most of all the wide open spaces with limited modern technology. A place with pure unspoiled landscapes with potential to apply renewable energy systems to already sustainable lifestyles. I have timed my trip here in Africa with another dream of mine, attending the World Cup of soccer/ futbol. Starting in less than three weeks from now. Landing in Cape Town South Africa on April 8th 2010 I checked into Long Street Backpacker in the main trendy area with restaurants, shopping and nightlife. A, great hostel excellent location ... read more

Sunshine Coast We checked out of the timeshare and walked up the steep hill to the taxi station looking for transportation to Storm's River. After negotiating for a little while, we agreed on a price and took off. We were going the opposite direction that the mini bus's were going so we had to pay a little more, but had a private bus to take us to our destination through Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park. After getting lost once, we made it to Tube 'n Axe Backpackers in Storm's River, just outside of the park. We checked in for one night. I got a dorm bed and went to bed early, as I was recovering from the previous night, and had a big day ahead. We got up the next morning and got a shuttle to Bloukrans ... read more

Day 50 - Coffee Bay - 17/9/09 The Baz Bus journey was the same as yesterday; long and boring. It arrived for me at the backpackers at 0630, the morning was grey and cloudy and that pretty much was exactly the way I felt about everything!! The same people got on at the various places they had been deposited around Port Elizabeth the previous night. We stopped off at various points to pick up extra people who hadn’t been on the bus the previous night; in fact when we left Port Elizabeth it was quite uncomfortable as the bus was completely full. We continued though the Eastern Cape, dropping people off and picking other people up until we reached the town of Mthatha where we passed by the house where Nelson Mandela grew up, the driver ... read more

Hello Everyone; We have been seeing some of the most beautiful country ever! After leaving Buffalo Bay we went to Nature's Valley and stayed at "The Wild Spirit" backpackers. It was great. We went to Monkey Land, a sanctuary for monkeys from all over the world that have never lived in the wild, but are getting as close to it as they ever will. Some were peoples exotic pets, some came from movie studios, over-crowded zoos and believe it or not, quite a few were organ grinders monkeys taught to be pick pockets, they were confiscated from gypsies all around Europe and Russia. It was really cool. Right next door to it was the largets free-flight bird sanctuary in the world. Same thing, exotic pets and movie birds that needed a home. It was so beautiful. ... read more

Hey guys, Well after a super driving day and my favorite rural African driving game "Avoid the pothole while doing 120km/h" we arrived in Coffee Bay. (He doesn't understand the concept of slowing down so it's much easier to avoid the potholes. Instead hits them and says sorry that one snuck up on me! (edited by Tyne)) Coffee Bay was highly recommended to us by lots of other travelers and I don't know if it was because the weather wasn't the best or because neither of us is a dope smoking hippy but it didn't live up to the hype. The bay itself is quite beautiful but it wasn't really our scene. So we decided the next day to head to the next bay over "Umdumbi" which was also recommended to us. This was a much ... read more

for once i think this might be a quick blog... coz it was 6 weeks ago nearly! oops. so we went to chinsta west, stopping off in gragamstown for lunch... which was v v african, no white people and nowhere to eat except kfc! missed dinner in buckeneers and played sopious amounts of drinking games instead! hurrah! and as i said before, the breakfast was great! id like to say the drive to coffee bay was pretty smooth, and it was, until the turn off to get there. if there was ever a road more in need of a repair i think this may be the one. the potholes are so vast and so frequent, not to mention the roaming farm animals that think, clearly, that they own the road, especially blind corners, that its an ... read more

Transkei - Bulungula Part 1 Transkei part 1 I made it home! I thought I would be writing this blog next week about my wonderful vacation and the music festival, but in true African Transkei fashion nothing went according to plan! So I guess I will start from the beginning… We probably should have known when the car would not start and the speedometer broke before we even left Durban, we should just stay at home! But we thought we had done it all right, we had all our camping gear, we had the car serviced, we managed to fit everything and us and we were off! We drove through the most beautiful landscapes, first along the coast then we turned inland through rolling hills and tree farms that looked like Eastern Washington. We turned off ... read more

Transkei - Coffee Bay part 2 After our initial adventure turned out well and we had the most wonderful time, we set out for Mdumbi excited and optimistic. The drive started out well with only a couple wrong turns which were corrected by the fact Robin and I study isiZulu which is very close to Xhosa so we were able to communicate at least a little bit. Our last fatal wrong turn we knew was wrong right away but we didn’t think we would be able to back up and get back. The road was freshly cut, technically not even a road yet, just a tractor trail. I ended up walking ahead moving big rocks and sod for the low riding Renault. We knew we were in deep but had no where else to go, so ... read more
