There was a last minute cancellation for next Monday so the permit is now mine, all mine!!! No worries: I did talk to Jessica first and she said that I can work Sunday instead of Monday. I'm not skipping out on work to visit my gorilla friends. 31 Jul 2009 update: I went to pick up and pay for my permit today only to find out after I got there that they did not actually have it! Apparently, the company that promised it to them gave it to someone else. They didn't call me or email me, they just waited for me to show up this afternoon. Very annoying since it was a 20 minute uphill walk with a full backpack. I had another trip on hold with the, but said I needed to think about ... read more

Hello from Day 3 in Kigali! All is well and I’m completely adjusted to the time zone. Things are starting to feel routine and I am enjoying it all! I’ve been busy at work and have two productive meetings today. Tomorrow is a catch up and reflection day and then I’m touring the largest referral hospital in Kigali on Friday. Jessica and I met today and started mapping out next week. There is a lot to do and my list is growing, but it’s still reasonable to accomplish by 14 Aug 2009. I'm especially excited about the day I will tour a primary health care facility, a districy hospital, and a referral hospital - all three levels of the health care system here. Plus, they are all either on the way to or in Butare (now ... read more

Sarah and I were both excited to realize we slept in pretty well this morning, but then we realized we didn’t change our watches and got up the same time as normal. But it was a nice long sleep, regardless. And no rush this morning. The only problem I had last night was with the mosquito net. I fell asleep before we wrapped it around the bed, so Sarah did before passing out; there were multiple times in the night I was tangled in it. One time in particular, I was trying to move it and there was enough static that it was sparking at me! Honoline had to work today, so she arranged for another Choir kid, Clemens, to show us around Kigali. Joseph set breakfast out for us- the Agashya juice that is so ... read more

Greetings from Kigali! I arrived safely last night after three flights. Although I still feel a little guilty, I must say that business class is a nice way to travel! The food was excellent (lamb stew, ice cream with fresh berries and whipped cream) and the seats were really comfortable. I slet for a few hours from RDU to Heathrow and then a few more from Heathrow to Nairobi. My connection there was tight and I could only check my luggage to Nairobi rather than all the way to Kigali. The woman at the Transfer Desk was helpful, but when my flight for Kigali was boarding, the luggage from my flight was still being unloaded. I did the paperwork when I got to Kigali and my bag arrived this afternoon. My driver was at the airport ... read more

Didn't get to posting yesterday (we didn't do that much anyways). We had originally planned on spending our final three nights here at the Mille Collines, but once we arrived, prior to heading out to Ruhengeri, Cave & Kuntz went to the Mille Collines to confirm our reservation and found out that all of the amenities were closed for remodeling. They got us reservations at the Stipp, but then the hotel was forced to give our rooms to the government. We ended up staying in some large homes that weren't quite finished (landscaping, painting, ect) that are owned by the Stipp. They were big and such, but a gated community of identical homes 40 minutes from the city wasn't exactly the coolest thing in the world. It was however, a nice break to have showers with ... read more

I warm further to Rwandan minibuses when we leave Gisenyi on time and only half full but the comfort levels drop at Ruhengeri when the remaining seats are filled by other Kigali-bound passengers and their luggage. There are many wooden cylinders in various roadside trees, and it's only later that I figure out that they are beehives. We pass numerous signs along the way - I can't read any Kinyarwanda but the word "Jenoside" in red letters presumably means the obvious, and I come to the conclusion that these are memorial sites from the madness of 1994. There are many. Like in Uganda, carrying one's luggage/goods on one's head seems to be popular. We drive through one village where I see several people wearing Father Christmas hats, presumably for warmth, as well as one fellow in ... read more

This one's probably going to be pretty long; I've got a lot to explain. Saw President Kagame's house last night. Lots of soldiers with assault rifles guarding it. Came to the realization today that nearly every business in downtown Kigali is guarded by a security guard with a shotgun. Woke up this morning and got on the bus to the Kigali Genocide Center. The center includes a large museum similar to the Holocaust museum in D.C. There are also 15 completed mass graves, as well as two that are still open and being filled as bodies are found. There are currently 258,000 genocide victims buried at the Kigali Genocide Center. Security was tight- we had our bags searched by guards with AK-47s at two different checkpoints and had to pass through a metal detector. The museum ... read more

Forty hours, seven time zones, and two dismal lay-overs after leaving New York, I arrive in Kigali at half-past three in the morning, a somnolent mess of rumpled clothes, dried-out contacts, and skin like wax paper. The bunch of us debarking in Rwanda shuffle through the airport’s halls like refugees; apart from a young, eager barrista manning the bar at the Bourbon Coffee shop, the place is lifeless. You can’t help but feel like a fugitive creeping into a country under the cover of darkness. I think of my first visit to Rwanda last year, whisking across the smooth tarmac from Uganda, when the tall stands of eucalyptus trees and the bright green tea plantations and the banana plants like starbursts made my arrival feel like a triumphal parade. Now there’s something ignoble about my hunched ... read more

I'm writing from an internet cafe in downtown Kigali that has what is perhaps the slowest internet in the world! Took a solid 9 minutes to load this page... Anyways, we certainly arrived safely. All three flights went fine, and the transfers were pretty smooth. I closest we came to trouble was some drunk lady who claimed to know us. She claimed a lot of things. I had my bags searched in Brussels, but the guy was pretty nice. Beautiful scenery on the way down- lots of wildfires burning in Sudan. Ah, Rwanda. What a beautiful country! Customs were quick and easy ,as was getting to our hotel. I've gotta love the street life here: hundreds of people walking down the streets, cars, buses, motos, and trucks vying for a place in traffic. We got to ... read more
