Janis and I met in KLA. We spent the night there before trying to find the Jaguar bus service to Kigali the next morning. Hoping to catch the 8 am departure we set out early, but were dismayed to see the bus pulling out of the parking lot early as we arrived. This turned out to be good thing when I started feeling incredibly nauseous from taking my Malaria pills on an empty stomach. Janis walked around looking for food as I sat on the side of the road trying not to dry heave. After getting some biscuits in my stomach I started feeling much better and we headed back to the bus park. Aboard the bus we were thrilled to find that the seats actually had seatbelts. SEATBELTS! The ride to Kigali was uneventful and ... read more

We had just over 10days in Rwanda and started by visiting the genocide memorials in and around the capital, Kigali. It might sound really macabre but having read a few books about the genocide over the last couple of years it's this that drew me to come here - and I'm really glad I did as despite the short time we had all in it ended up being one of my favourite African countries. The genocide followed the death of President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane crashed at Kigali airport under suspicious circumstances on 6 April 1994. Within hours a campaign of violence spread from the capital throughout the country. In Kigali the presidential guard initiated a campaign of retribution, murdering leaders of the political opposition and beginning the slaughter of Tutsi's and moderate ... read more

I don't particularly enjoy writing "heavy" entries, but writing about Rwanda today and ignoring the fallout from the Genocide wouldn't paint for you an accurate picture but an incomplete one. Sometimes you peruse a museum lightly, glancing fleetingly at some exhibits and perhaps reading a plaque or two here and there, strolling through to see what the hype was all about. Sometimes though, you let yourself become totally engulfed in the pictures, you read every narration, you watch each film in its entirety, and you stare at every murdered face as if you had seen it somewhere in some life before. I guess I'm saying that today, I was the latter. I set aside one or two hours of my morning to see the two small floors of the Kigali Genocide Memorial and finally leave after ... read more

After another couple of long, bumpy, hot, dusty, hand waving days on the truck it was time to cross the border into Rwanda. Everyone was on the gorilla countdown and getting excited about doing our trek to go and see the mountain gorillas in the wild, Dian Fossey styles. Rwanda is a stunningly beautiful country. It's really hilly and all the hills are lush and covered in crops, the people are super friendly, and it's difficult to believe the horrific genocide which took place there no much more than 10 years ago. We did a stop off in Kigali to visit the genocide museum. It was emotionally draining, as you would expect, and the truck was quiet on the way to that night's camp site. If you're reading this and think I'm rushing, I am. We ... read more

From Luzern after mountain climbing, I went to Bern and watched the NY Rangers destroy the Bern team by a score of 8-1. I also quickly met Rangers coach Tom Renney, shook his hand and thanked him for everything he has done for Hockey Canada. Then I went to Geneva and spent a night in the airport for an early flight to Brussels. From Brussels, I went to Brugge, a classic old town which is a higlight of Belgium. # nights in Brugge, then back to the airport for my long awaited flight to Rwanda. After the 9 hour flight I was landing in Kigali. It was a weird feeling. Knowing that for a long time that my goal had been to get to Rwanda. It was a definite feeling of accomplishment, but there were also ... read more

Muraho from Kigali So you might have guessed that Muraho is hello in Kinyarwanda. I landed in Kigali last night after a pleasant 10 hour flight from London via Brussels despite being stuck in a middle seat. I read "Water for Elephants," which was recommend to me while I was in Dublin, it was great, I also recommend it. There was also some horrible movie with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon about this guy who is a die hard Red Sox fan, anyone else seen it? It was just really really bad. Anyway, I landed around 7 and it was still warm out which was great after the weather London has been having the past few weeks. The border guard was probably the nicest I have ever encountered, welcomed me to Rwanda etc etc. J and ... read more

I have arrived in Rwanda after a full 48 hours of traveling on busses. Let me just tell you about those 48 hours, as it was quite an adventure. I left Moshi at 3:00 on Monday afternoon. Took the bus to Arusha, about 2 hours away. I befriended a little girl on the way who gave me an orange. I arrived in Arusha and had to spend the night at a hotel because the bus to Kahama (another town in Tanz) didn't leave until 5:45 the next morning. The cab that took me to the hotels totally ripped me off, and charged me a "waiting fee" to stop at one hotel and ask if they had a room. I need to start getting a little smarter about people out to rip off the lone white girl. ... read more

we leave monday morning at like 5am for arusha, tanzania. i'm in an internet cafe trying to work on my paper that's due tomorrow, but i'm managing to avoid it by spending time doing other things... like typing this out. the keyboard is totally throwing me off because the enter and shift keys are shaped different - super annoying. i went to church today for the second time in many many years. the first time here i went to mass with my family (they're catholic) and the service was in kinyarwanda - it was interesting but really really hot. i spent the 4th of july at hotel de mille collines (aka hotel rwanda) - it was beautiful there, super fancy. um what else - i live right by the airport here in a nice house. yesterday ... read more

with another keyboard in arabic. it's very beautiful here. actually really beautiful. i was glad to hear back from so many people - it makes my day because no one calls me and i haven't been able to call the us from my phone now that i'm in rwanda. tomorrow night we move into our homestays - it's starting to go by quicker and i guess i have to admit i'm getting a bit sick of being around people sometimes... we drove to the border and crossed it on foot yesterday. literally a few minutes after driving we passed a genocide memorial site. the words were in kinyarwanda, but genocide was in bright red. it was kind of crazy. on the way here we also stopped at a refugee settlement about 80 kms before the rwandan ... read more

Hi Again!! Jess I;ve officially kicked Matt off blog duty hahahaha.... OK so: We are now back in Uganda after about a week in Rwanda. We went to the genocide memorial centre in the capital, Kigali (which is the most civilised city we've been to thus far; the moto-taxi drivers all wear helmets and people obey the speed limits!!), which was incredibly emotional. The first floor gives amazing details and stories on the genocide - how it happened, what went on during it, the aftermath.... very hard to watch but really interesting. The second floor was devoted to education on other genocides that have happened around the world, and then there's another room (and this sent me over the edge) that is just full of pictures of children who passed away during the genocide, along with ... read more
