Finally we arrive in a town, Swakopmund, an adrenaline town at that. We start with a talk about all of the activities we can do, I opt for fishing and sky diving. It also means we have internet access and stay in dorms in hostel Amanpuri so have beds! This is the night of the stag/hen do so we need the comfort of dorms with mirrors and hair dryer facilities! At 2pm I'm picked up for my sky dive, it's not really hit me yet and doesn't until I'm hanging out of the plane. Katie and Sheriden are also jumping, Richelle is tagging along to watch and take photos. We've each opted to have our own cameraman for $70 extra so we can't all fit in the plane at the same time, it only holds 6 ... read more

Well the start of our trip has gone great! Please take a look at our truck. The carcass is more like a bus, but in in Africa it is more prestigious to drive a “truck” so we are not allowed to call it a bus in front of the driver. There is the driver/mechanic and the chef, then the tour guide leader, and 30 of us. We are Americans, Canadiennes, Dutch, German, Aussie, English and Korean. All in all, it is a pretty nice group. The first day we set off in our truck and made it to a South African vineyard. Nothing of note, except we had a nice wine tasting and the campsite was nice. It took some time to adjust to putting up and taking down our tent (named Anne by the way) ... read more

Windhoek, Swakopmund, Cape Cross Watched the sun rise in a stunning African sky, completely cloudless with a huge sun. Unfortunately it was Joburg airport and zero degrees, and another few hours to ur destination of Windhoek. Both felt an intital surge of pleasure at being back in Africa as we drove West to the seaside and desret resort of Swakopmund. Many things very different to our time in Kenya, 17 years ago now, good level roads, Western petrol stations (including this one I'm using the internet in). Towns all clean and tidy. After a week here we're getting used to the desert climate, wrapping up warm to start the day, peeling off layers of jumpers as it warms up, boiling hot in the middle of the day, then suddenly cool to cold in the evening. June 12th What a day we had in store for us! Everyone in the group apart from Wendy had signed up to go sandboarding and we all looked forward to it in high anticipation. After having a huge breakfast we piled into the van that would take us to the sand dunes about 15 minutes outside Swakopmund. We met the owner and creator of sandboarding in Swakopmund, a woman named Beth who was originally from San Francisco. She is a really nice lady and very knowledgeable about the area, having been there for 17 years. Before we knew it we were at the sand dunes and mesmerized by the size and quantity of them. We all got our gear situated, basically regular snowboards and boots. We were also very lucky, the weather was on our side ... read more

June 10th Sleeping on the truck sounds like such a great idea before you goto bed, and it really is, but the sacrifice is waking up in the morning covered in morning dew. It’s not the most pleasant, it’s cold and wet and you don’t feel like you’re going ever be dry again. So after a semi-miserable morning wake up we sat around the remnants of the fire and tried warming up with tea and toast while talking about what the day had in store for us. To make the morning that much more…experience-filled the truck was stuck in the sand again. That meant that Farron, Nicio, Luke and I got a thick layer of sand on us to compliment the morning dew that was still drying. No big deal though, just not ideal morning labor ... read more

....this will be quick, as internet here is SLOW Snapshot: We left the Okvandgo Delta in Botswana a week ago and now in Swakopmund Namibia. Okvandgo Delta is (at least the locals claim), the largest inland delta in the world. Imagine a vast area the size of Maine under water, and once every year the water spreads to central Botswana, turning desert into green habitats. We arrived when waters were starting to move, and to date, has one of the highest flows recorded (at least to date). We then crossed the border into Namibia, and cruised around Etosha National Park. This huge salt pan is home to all the large and little critters in a 20,000 km protected land. Because it is winter here, all the critters are easily observed around the few water holes. Right then, a horrifically overdue update on the trip so far - time and t'internet connections have been against me for most of this last section but now I have both, so here we go... Last report was from Vic Falls, so might as well continue from there, and go via Botswana to where I am at the moment, which is Swakopmund in south-western Namibia. Vic Falls: We had a few days in Vic Falls to explore the place. To be fair, half an hour would probably have done for the 'town' itself, basically just two streets crammed with tour operators, backpackers lodges, fast food shops and bars, but the main reason for anyone to visit here isn't the town, it's the huge wall of water that you can hear from several km away. Due to ... read more

This weekend we went to the coast. We drove about 4 ½ hours west to Swakopmund which is a coastal German town. About two weeks ago we met a man here at Casablanca that just happened to run a school in the same town that we wanted to visit. We changed our plans slightly so that we could see the school while in session on Friday. This meant that we had to drive over Thursday night and miss school here on Friday. The school is a non-profit, two classroom school that services about 30 students. These children come from the surrounding squatter camps. There are families that come down from the northern part of the country for work and bring their children with them. This school helps catch these students up, so that they are not ... read more

Swakopmund It’s the Weekend! Swakopmund {Whoever came up with a name like Swakopmund??? } brands itself “The Adrenaline Capital of Namibia” with a number of Adventure Sports on offer. We are in Swakopmund for a long weekend and we don’t have to put up any tents. We’re in dormitory rooms at the Swakop Lodge. While we are here we are encouraged to sign up for sky-diving, sand-boarding and other such sports. Really I should be looking for “The Horlicks Capital of Namibia” but I sign up for a Dolphin Cruise and a Quad-Biking session. Friday Night is Party Night The town of Swakopmund is bigger than I expected. A lot of it is quite new and modern-looking but there are still some of the old German colonial buildings surviving. A lot of the businesses are geared ... read more

Looks about the same except the sun sets on it from this side. We didn't really do any of the things we had planned to do today. We attempted to do them, including driving out to the Quad Bike stop just north of Walvis Bay, but Jennifer thought it was too touristy and there were definitely a ton of people and I was never all that hot on it so we took off. All of the tours are guided, which is probably a good idea for safety's sake but takes some of the fun out of it. The locals seem to take it very seriously however, with some guys donning full racing gear like motocross suits. Swakopmund We attempted to go to the beach today near the lighthouse as suggested by William and Thea but it ... read more
