During the nite we were visited by elephants again, but this time the whole herd was walking through the camp, and around the tents it was brilliant. but this time alex and myself just slept through it.We spent the morning on the river which was spectacular. We say many different types of birds and managed to watch 2 hippo fighting for territory. Man that was something else. Blood flying everywhere but their sheer size and strength and speed!!! After we got back we packed up and left for Ngepi. But a unanimous decision was announced that Nambwa has been the best camp site we have stayed at so far in terms of beauty and things to see. When we arrived at Ngepi, we were very surprised! There are funny signs while driving to the camp, the ... read more

None of us got out of bed in an rush because we all had a restless night. After a very nice breakfast, we decided to go on a game drive and i wanted to stay behind due to being sick of driving and i really wanted to catch a fish. On the game drive they saw elephants but the sheer amount of elephant was amazing and extremely frighting and due to there being so many elephants, the game drive was cut short because of the road being blocked for to long. After a slow morning i had finally managed to catch a 3kg barbel ( its similar to a catfish). We made friends with the family staying next to us and we enjoyed a beer around the braai while we exchanged stories of our adventures on ... read more

In a village called Shamangorwa, a few hours’ fast drive east from the main city of Rundu the title of this blog is the beleif. Well not only in this village but all throughout Namibia but will get to that soon. Up in this area it is definitely not a touristic area although many tourist trucks are passing the main road heading towards the main attraction in Etosha National Park. This small, cozy and forgotten village is in the middle of the bush, roughly 10km from the main road and if you don’t have own transportation it is quite challenging to get there but not impossible. Shamangorw village is few meters from Angola and the Okavango River is dividing these two countries like day and night. As Namibia is just growing and the development is extremely ... read more

M - Its not often you get to visit a country like Angola so it was with great excitement that we boarded a ferry to take the car across the river to Angola. Only joking, just wanted to see if Steve (the owner of our vehicle ) was reading the blog! We did get though get pretty close, our camp site near Rundu on the edge the Caprivi Strip literally overlooked the Zambesi river that is the boarder between Namibia and Angola. Apparently its common for tourists to take a fishing trip on the river and then touch down on the other side 'visit' Angola. We decided that jumpoing out on the other side wasn't really worthy of a pin in the map so declined and enjoyed the view of Angola from our camp. In Namibia ... read more

Okavango Delta to Rainbow Camp, Namibia Leaving the Swamp Stop at the civilized hour of 7:30, we stopped at Choppies for groceries at Shakawe, crossed the border at Mohembo out of Botswana for the last time, and drove the short distance in Namibia to Rainbow Camp, near Popa Falls. This camp is located on the Okavango River and we camped on the river bank, right next to a sign that said 'Danger Crocodiles'. Shortly after erecting our tents, we are given the 'safety talk' and told the story of how the owners lost their dog to a crocodile not too long ago. OK, we get the warning. We did some more hand washing and Kayla had a shower. About camp showers in Africa: they are usually outdoors, with some sort of reed enclosure with a thatch ... read more

After visiting Alex in Windhoek, we wended our way to Otavi - more exactly to Alex's geo camp at Kombat where there is an old mine. Alex is exploring for various minerals in the area, so we went along to check things out. After that, we prepared for our camping trip. We set out Monday morning buying provisions at Grootfontein and continuing north to Rundu, then Divundu, Katima Mulilo then a large loop to Kongola and back through Divundu etc. The trip was 660 km long altogether. We came back dirty and pleased with some aspects, and not so thrilled with others. There were 6 of us, so 2 vehicles (4xd) and all we needed. at this time of the year if you don't book, all accommodation is taken except for the camping.... But lovely campsites ... read more

am still having an amazing time, last two weeks have gone so fast, have now got use to the bumpy roads, dust and dirt, have never been so filthy in my life! from swakopmund we travelled up the skeleton coast to the huge seal colony at cape cross and then on to spitzkoppe which are amazing rock formations in the deset, climbed to the top for sunset. Then onto Etosha national park, so many animals! saw my first rhinos and went out on a night game drive. Saw a leopard try to catch an impala it was very exciting, loads of lions and everything else too, we were really lucky to see so much although an elephant got a little too close to the truck! Had jackals fighting outside my tent, sounded like fin and nellie ... read more

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time,to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted”.Bill Bryson. No chance of our taking anything for granted as we left Island View Lodge with heavy hearts. But somehow a new day, direction and destination lifted our spirits as the two vehicles headed west into the Caprivi region of Namibia.Instinctively the radio was flicked on and interestingly some German oompah type song was belting out. This was once upon a time a German colony but the fact that this was Radio Thombela in modern day Namibia…well! To cap it the announcer sprouted away in German. It is fairly well known that the Germans visit Namibia in numbers in search of the sun ... read more

“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey”.Fitzburgh Mullon.Well…..we haven’t exactly concerned ourselves about the state of roads for the past two weeks as vehicles have largely been stationery. There has, however, been a tinge of concern and sadness at the fact that our time at Island View Lodge is slowly drawing to an end.The last few evenings reminiscing around the camp fire have touched on the fact that we now only have a few more sleeps and,of course, that big tiger is still out there somewhere. On the subject of fishing, there has been much debate about where these damn tiger have gone temporarily….no answers as yet but to console ourselves we have established that “the best month” to catch the really big buggers is August(funny, never the month that one goes fishing!).So,no surprises here…the trip already in ... read more
