Hello, Everyone, Thank you so much for all the comments. I love getting little messages. It feels like college when the mail came and I would actually get a letter! I have a couple of fun things to tell you, but mostly we are busy planning, teaching and marking. They were right when they told us third term would be the shortest. We started teaching the 3rd and already it is the 19th. It is kind of like after spring break at Bartlett, we just zoomed to the end. Anyway, my co-teacher Lucia goes on maternity leave next week. Next Thursday is her last day. I haven't actually been told yet, but I'm going to be teaching my favorite 11th grade class, my 8th grade, and it has been jokingly suggested I take over her "Religious ... read more

I just posted the blog and was sitting here with the door open thinking, "I'm really used to living with insects now," when in flew the most humongous bumblebee sort of thing I have ever seen. It just flew straight in the back door coming toward me. I freaked. It must have been as big as a golf ball, round with pretty wide wings (needed because it was so fat). Now that I think of it, I might have seen it in a Disney Cartoon. Fortunately, it flew to the screens on the open kitchen window. So I got the broom and carefully lifted up the screen. It was more intelligent than a fly, because it flew right out again. Then I ran and closed the back door, so it couldn't change its mind. Anne Lingener-Reece ... read more

Dear Friends, It is Saturday, the 31st of August. I am not sure why, because usually I am really depressed toward the end of vacations, but I feel really good today. The kids come back on various busses from various distances on Monday, and classes start Tuesday. I think that I was worried about vacationing by myself, but it turns out that I needn't have. I went to Windhoek the first week (holiday started the 18th of August). Rode there with a friends. I think I got that far in the last blog. Anyway, as I was leaving the B&B to go to Backpackers, I asked the woman if she knew a good hairdresser who could cut my hair. She recommended hers, just around the corner with her shop in her house, and made me an ... read more

Hello, Everyone, I am in Windhoek on holiday. We have two weeks off, and I haven't any idea what I am planning to do, but lots of possibilities. We finished exams and paperwork. The kids left Friday, we had one more meeting Saturday (yesterday), and are free. I had been planning to come to Windhoek just to shop, and to check out printing companies. I've been planning with a colleague to travel to Windhoek with him and his family on one of the plush busses. We had it all worked out and then they were all booked! So late Saturday he let me know we were leaving this morning at 6:00. I didn't do badly packing with so little time, but I forgot my Lonely Planet book. So first stop will be a book store. Anyway, ... read more

Hello, Everyone, The President actually came, so now it is all over. What a relief. Nothing went as we planned, but apparently the President was quite taken with a beating heart on the SMART board, so was entirely happy with the school and his visit. For a brief week or two the people in Windhoek love us. We were the BIG story on the news that night which we all gathered to watch. I was on Namibian television! Really, me. As it turned out, people came from Windhoek about three days before and took over the preparations. We were decorated, tents were set up, new furniture, enough chemicals and bones and things to make Potemkin labs. So I don't know if the President knows that we actually do not have anything for any sort of science ... read more

Hello, All, Things are very busy getting ready for the President's visit next Monday. We are preparing big entertainment, there are extra security, lots of bigwigs, just like West Wing. Everything down to the minute. It's getting pretty exciting. Anyway, I'm putting up some more of my photos. I lent out my camera and hope to get it back before Monday. These are more of our trip. After the visit I'll write a nice, newsy blog. I am missing Keppoch, but doing my happiness yoga. The weather is great, but I understand Sept., Oct., Nov. will be almost unbearably hot. I have to stop thinking about it. Okay, here are some pictures.... read more

Hello, All, It has been awhile, but a busy while! I never actually finished our trip, but I have something more recent first. This past Saturday I went to Rundu by myself! I had called the kombi driver and arranged to be picked up at 6:00 a.m. Had breakfast and a coffee milkshake in my favorite little cafe, bought some flannel pajamas and went to Edumeds (the teacher store), where I found a copy of Cry, the Beloved Country. No one here seems to know it, and I think they should. Anyway, our LRC (Learners Representative Council, much like our student council) had been taken to a leadership workshop on Friday and were coming home Saturday. Before they left, I arranged with the driver to catch a ride home with them. In Rundu things close on ... read more

Hello, Everyone, Sorry it has been so long, but I have been busy having adventures! My sister Nicki is here and we are at this very moment driving from Swakopmund on the coast to Etosha National Park! It is the big, famous park. The whole center is Etosha Pan which is a dry lake, but it sometimes fills with water if the rains are good. They were not good this year, so everything is very dry. Rachel, my roommate and I left school on April 25th. We were picked up at 5:00 a.m. and in Windhoek by 3:00 p.m. We had two days of in-service in Windhoek at the same backpackers hostel as January. It felt like home! Then I flew to Cape Town where Nicki and Cathy were waiting for me right outside customs. Cathy ... read more

Here are some more photos. I'm still not good at it, so again two are the same. Two are in the school building courtyard, one at my front door, the fourth is three of my favorite girls by their hostel (dorm).... read more

Hello, all my friends, We leave tomorrow for Windhoek. Exams are finished, and what an experience! The end of the year at Bartlett was nothing compared to this. So many forms, so many meetings, so nuts! We finished Monday, although the students left Friday. Then on Monday evening the principal tried to get us to agree to come back early. We are due the 19th, learners the 20th and classes begin the 21st. But, of course, we have to have a huge long meeting about who knows what? So one of the quiet teachers said that we could perhaps do that next break, but we've all made plans. So okay, a meeting on Sunday. 5:00 p.m. was not acceptable to the principal, so they decided at 2:00. Well, Nicki and I are driving from Etosha that ... read more
